In the nether.. there is a light box (thats what i call it) when you break it, light dust comes out shouldn't you be able to make a light dust torch like a red stone torch? It should make more light than a regular torch.
A lot of people think that lightstone will be used for making lanterns.
A torch could be a nice thing to do with just the dust, though. More powerful and longer lasting than a normal torch, but would still go out.
My thing is: since we have lightstone blocks, why need a lantern. I think lightstone blocks are the lanterns...

Because lighstone blocks are fragile, incredibly costly, and occupy a full space?
If lanterns are torch replacements, I would think they'd be structured more like existing torches, in that you can pass through them.
Plus, lightstone blocks cost 9 dust and can't be moved around after it's placed. It's costly and unwieldy to the point where it's not even worth it unless you're aiming for extravagance.

then make some jack o lanterns, plus lightstone and jack o lanterns can light up the underwater
I am 100% positive light stone WILL NOT be used for lanterns. Why? You have to mine to diamond to make a diamond pick, then mine obsidian to make a portal, then brave the nether to get lightstone. All that for some permanent light? I dont think so.
Actually, all you need is at least 6 iron and access to a lava lake.
You can mold portals y'know.

Rather than 1 coal to make 4 torches.
Therefore to be fair... It should be 1 dust = 4/9ths of a torch... No sorry
Thanks, voicelessbard for the great avatar and sig! (search him in the MC forums)

Better than glass. At least it drops something.
you fail at math
Assuming this was true, one blocks worth of dust (9) would make 36 torches.
However, if these were to be equal to the block, they would have to make 1/36 of a torch, not 4/9
Hamumu.com, the site I should thank for helping me find minecraft.

It's hard to find pumpkins. D:
I do however, use jack o lanterns already, much more extensively than lightstone. They're a far better lightsource.
