I havent been able to find any pumpkins BUT I do have a couple of uncovered dungeons near the surface. If I covered these up with dirt, would pumpkins grow?
The pumpkins growing on top of a dungeon is an urban myth, it's not true. Best way to find pumpkins is to grab couple of torches, bacon, sword and compass and start exploring the world.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's true, but anyways... if you cover a dungeon with dirt I'm fairly certain a pumpkin won't grow, so your best bet if you wat pumpkins is definitely to grab a compass and set off by boat.

I was once mining out some iron, and the lava
fell in me.
But I lost 120 pounds in 4 seconds thanks to Lava!

=P this is exactly what i did to find the 64 pumpkin stack in my inventory.
1. Move spawn location next to mostly unexplored land, where new chunks shall be generated
2. Put all items except a few tools in chest
3. Die. Waste tools.
4. Explore new chunks to find lots of pumpkins
6. Run very far toward spawn using compass you "found"
7. Wonder where 5 went.
8. ???
9. ...PUMPKINS.

Someone once told me you could actually use the eggs and bucket of milk to make a cake. Turns out it was just a lie...

Pumpkins do somtimes grow over dungeons I found that out when i descovered my first pumpkin patch far away from my base. I grabbed all my pumpkins when i heard a zombie err... atleast 3 zombies maoning and screeching so I did my glitch of constantly clicking f "fog" to see flames of the zombie spawner, I saw one! Its probably a 1 in 100 chance of that happening like the so there you go.
It is done using MCEdit. It is basically cheating, hacking, etc.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure it almost always leads to a dungeon, not one in 100, because out of my efforts, I have found dungeons under pumpkins many a time.
