Today I started up minecraft to work on my house, and upon attempting to open a chest, the game froze and crashed. I have a high resolution skin installed through the new skinning feature Notch added.
You installed an HD texture pack through the texture-pack installer? I thought it didn't support and HD skins, if it doesn't then that probably explains your problem, if it does then I have no clue.

Anyone else having this issue?

It turns out that because of the update, all of the modded items a had in the chest before said update were unrecognized by the new update.
Because all of the unrecognized items, whenever I tried to open that chest, the game would crash.
OPTIONS:
1. Leave "pandora's box" in middle of home which would end the world whenever I open it
2. Build obsidian box around chest and detonate with TNT
I chose option two.
RESULT
Game crashed because not all of the items were detroyed when the TNT detonated. Game crashes whenever I load this file.
Yeah, I had the same problem.
I ended up just deleting the chest with a 3D map editor and giving about half of the contents back to me with an inventory editor. I figure after letting MC update without worrying about the mods I deserved to lose a couple of diamonds.
Maybe you should try re-installing the mods, destroying the items and then deleting the minecraft.jar?

Use Minepedia to help you. Look up datavalues. Any items that don't match the data values on that page should be deleted
