Are you saying altitude does not effect climatic conditions? Look, I know they are a geological feature, but so are deserts, and tundras. Basically, I'm talking about a place mainly made of exposed rock, possibly with snow on it. It could easily be a biome. If not that, make a rocky plain biome, because those exist, and then just make it that they can be quite mountainous. As for climate, the whole of the south island of New Zealand could beg to differ that. The west coast if covered in rain a whole lot, and the east coast is fine. This is all because of the mountains.
My point is simply that "mountains" cannot be a biome.
But, yes that is one point out of seven. In fact, I'm agreeing with that point (as well as all the others), just not some of the details in it.

7 Reasons I hate you:
1.Biomes ROCK
2.YOu insult biomes
3. YOU CANT STICK WITH THE BIOMES IF YOU HATE THEN THEN STOP PLAYING THE GAME
4.<Insert a reason here>
5.Wut?
6.Stop trollin' or I will send some people after you -->
7.I dissagree with you

As a first pass at implementing biomes, I think the Halloween update was pretty exciting. For such a complex task and such a short time frame, the fact that the code is functional at all is a triumph. From here it will take less work to refine biome implementation, and there is plenty of room to tweak things.
It seems to me that most people have issues with the details of biomes (such as how large they are or the aesthetics of them) rather than the concept of biomes. I work with programmers and have some coding experience, and I can tell you that tweaking the details of a system like this is as easy as changing the value of a constant (a size coefficient, for example) or adding some new textures. If you take issue with a facet of biome generation, it's nothing to be pessimistic about. Just keep the feedback coming and Notch will continue to refine the system.
I agree with the OP that biomes have a lot of room for improvement. IMO the current textures and block types don't fully support the 10-11 biomes theoretically available. I think some different textures for grass, trees, sand, etc. would go a long way, as would diverse generation algorithms for terrain and features. Trees in a Pain Forest ( =P ) should look different from trees in a Savannah, y'know? And not just in color, but in shape/size/density.
There are lots of things I have read, that I would quote and reply to, but there is just too much.
First off, I have seen all the diagrams, and know in quite good detail how biomes work. The bit about a swamp was that, it's not really a swamp at the moment, but a marsh (there is a lot of difference, swamps are water, reed and tree heavy).
Second, thank you BloodFreak, for actually understanding almost perfectly the purpose of this thread, and standing up for it.
So, here's the big bit. These were not complaints, but things I dislike, and of which notch could therefor improve. I realize the title is misleading, the word "current" should have been included. And no, there is no current replacement for the old "minecraft" biome, if you can call it that...By this, I mean it would follow the old spawn mechanic almost EXACTLY, and have the same grass a foliage colours as the old game. I honestly play more of the pirated copy my friend got now, not only because it runs on our school computers but because it looks so much better.
And, finally, (at least for now, must look this over, it's very late...) to people saying that mountains, islands etc are not biomes, you should check that up. AFAIK, Biomes support a specific type of life, that is rare to not even present elsewhere, and that includes mountains (Mt. Lions and Mt. Goats are named after them, and there are Mt. specific birds across the world) and as for islands, OK, they may not be a TRUE biome as such, but a progressive biome (border of ocean and any other biome) they are.
Anyways, To anyone taking this as a complaint, it is not, I just find it hard to portray CC, and I thought the points of improvement were relatively obvious.
Also, there are probably a lot of things wrong with this post, but I'm tired, and do not want to proof read it right now.
I think I can understand alot of what you've said in the topic here, even though I dont ENTIRELY agree.
I'm still finding plenty of big beaches myself, for one thing.... that hasnt vanished.
And I'm also still finding plenty of the really wonky mountains. The difference with that though, is that the mountains have actually gotten MORE wonky. Now instead of just your basic twisted blob of stone and grass, I've found a couple that are twisted blobs of rock, sand, and cacti. Never woulda seen anything like that before biomes.
I think my big problem with the worldgen BEFORE biomes was that it was OBSESSED with mountains and crazy hills. The landscape often looked kinda neat, but it was very annoying to actually cross. The first time I saw a "plains" sort of area after the patch.... flat, gently rolling landscape, no trees.... I thought it was the best thing ever. My thoughts of this havent really changed, lol.
The biomes arent perfect, no. But Notch did say that there's still improvement to be done. Some additional biomes also DO need to be added. While I have seen things like strings of small islands, I'm pretty sure that isnt a specific biome doing that. And I'd love to see a PROPER mountain biome. The goofy, tree covered ones are great and all, but a proper mountain range that actually LOOKS RIGHT would be really great.
Also, swamps. They need to appear more frequently. The idea sounds really cool.... flat land, with a bazillion little waterholes and reeds everywhere.... but I've never seen one. For me, they're so far just a myth....
Uberyes: "How near are you to finishing biomes?"

well a good thing about the desert bimoes (and forest) is if you see water youll defniatley find assloads of clay... on my first day i found abou 350 clay.

Either you don't get what a biome is, or you're trying to pull some smart ass comment. Would you mind enlightening me?

So, you know it's planned to come, but still complain because it's not there already?
How about waiting? You know nagging and moaning rarely leads to things getting done Faster...
Yeah, that was kind of my big moment here. Sorry for boasting.

To come: more diverse biomes, biome-specific plants and animals. Notch has said so.
