What about tunnels? Those are cool. They could solve the issue easy. Make them glass too so you still get a view. (as if there's much to really see in the first place.) I mean why put forth a little effort doing so when you could just change the game mechanics around to suite your needs. Pigmen might spawn on the tracks... but just dig the edges out and fill it with lava so the moument they wander FIZZZSIIITT. Dead.
Ghasts blowing up tracks is awesome. Do they do it on purpose by targeting random sections? No, they're just shooting at you. They blow up their own blocks, why not tracks? Ghasts not being able to destory Cobblestone and friends is a GODSEND. Notch might one day say "You know, I think it needs to be steel or higher." or just say "Nope everything goes, its the most unfair mob ever". The nether is not a wonderland paradise. Once in awhile you need to adjust with monsters on to protect your investsments in a hostile world. Just be lucky Notch hasn't designed some sort of Berserker monster. One that when it sees you, charges after you and smashes through any blocks between you and it until it gets you and devours your face. That'd be crazy and I'm sure the House Builders Association would be pissed.

Science is good when it teaches you how to turn a million ungrateful foreigners into glass.
when your traveling in a minecart just be on Peaceful.

I thought of this from the instance i finished reading the OP
Really, im very surprised noone else thought of this. IT FIXES EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM!!!!
It also kills the fun in having them.
And no, pigmen will not spawn on tracks. Nothing spawns on tracks, just like half-steps, glass, and stairs.

Iron is the track
There is no other space for my whole tunnel and both ends are blocked too. I had 3 pigmen on my track last minecart trip. There is no way to make minecarts work in hell with pigmen spawning on them.
I always thought the point of the Nether, whether yet realized or not, was that you weren't supposed to move on in and live there, but pass on through to get to other areas in the "real" world faster. I voted no simply because having mine carts and tracks in the Nether seems ridiculous to me. Might as well skip the Nether altogether and just make the tracks in the real world. You obviously don't plan on actually going any faster anyways, dinking around on Nether roller-coasters all day. :oP
There should only be two reasons to be in the Nether, neither of which should require permanent living in it. Either it should be used for fast travel (assuming portals ever get to working properly, and using them isn't a pain in the rear), or it should be used to gather materials within that can't be gathered elsewhere. And to me, this is regardless of whether you're playing on peaceful or not. The intended atmosphere in the Nether should be one of "get in, get out, ASAP". Foreboding, dark, gloomy, extremely hot, inhospitable, etc.
The Nether as a vacation destination makes the entire point of its existence moot, IMHO. And the fact that this is not only possible, but it's also what so many players around here desire out of it, only makes my disappointment in the addition as a whole grow that much more. I've never liked the idea of the Nether to begin with, but at least I can respect the intentions behind it.
I voted no because, be realistic guys, the Nether is technically speaking a 'hell', renamed as "The Nether" because Notch didn't want any biblical references. You are suppose to suffer in "The Nether", with the upside being very useful blocks and a teleporter of sorts to distant areas. If you really hate the place ruining the 'fun' for you, just don't go there. Simple answer, yet very effective!
If Ghast fireballs were 1538°C or even just hot enough to slightly deform iron railway tracks, the player would instantly explode when struck instead of just losing 3 hearts.
No they are steel, when you smelt iron you get steel both in real life and in the game.
The player seems to be abnormally strong. Destroying trees with 1 meter thick trunks with just the players bare hands is an example of this.
Ghast are strong too as they can destroy several cubic meters of bloodstone and other things in one blast.
No... steel is an alloy... you need coal or coke to create steel. If you melt iron, you get iron. Not steel. Steel is treated. That's like saying you can use oil in your car instead of gas. They're not the same.
This makes perfect sense. You can break down steel tracks with your bare hands but a giant fireball cannot.
..If you would like to walk down that road; Minecraft in and of itself doesn't make any sense on almost all aspects.
Edit: (Forgot to actually add substance to the thread). Ya, destructible tracks is cool. Perhaps we can work off my other "powered track" idea, which are tracks made of pure iron, that aren't destructible.
Build a tunnel around your track
Ghasts can't see you, so they won't shoot.
???
Profit.
1. No one reads full topic.
2. Multiple people suggest same thing.
3. ???
4. Profit.
And, and where's the step where I remind people that Ghast's aren't the only topic beind discussed atm (despite topic name). Pigmen also spawn on tracks, so building a tunnel around the track is inconvenient because you might have ZP spawn on the tracks and obstruct it.
It's a thread-stopping suggestion... it solves the issues this thread brings to discussion: If you build a tunnel, ghasts CANNOT blow up your tracks unless there's a hole you left.
The issue isn't things walking onto tracks. You can easily make an elevated track and it makes it harder for animals and etc to get on the track. The issue is pigmen SPAWNING on the track.
Also, for whomever asked, yes, I've had pigmen spawn on my track. I DO have a tunnel encasing my minetrack, and I was riding along.. LALALALALA. OH **** PIGMAN.
And I would normally shoot things off the track, but pigmen are my friends.
Pigmen spawning on tracks: We'll have to stop sheep, cows, chickens and pigs from walking on tracks then as well. My suggestion is to use a bow and shoot them out of your way.
Undoubtedly previously suggested, but I would like to say that tracks should be immune if they are on an immune block, but otherwise not. For example, if the block beneath the track is made of cobblestone, and that is immune, the track shouldn't come off. But if you are just putting the track down over dirt or bloodstone, it makes sense for it to be destroyed.

Just make the tracks themselves immune, but make it so fireballs and etc go through tracks, so the fireball with hit the ground underneath the track.. Then if that block is destroyed, the track is by default destroyed due to track behavior. If it's not destroyed, track sticks.
Only issue I see is if damage doesn't affect tracks and instead just hits the block underneath, in order to move tracks you have to always destroy the block under them.

Do you own Minecraft?
For some reason, pigmen don't follow the normal spawning rules (at least for tracks)
Idea: for tracks, lay a glass foundation, then put the track on top of the glass. Maybe then they won't spawn? >_>

The cobblestone isn't immune, they fire enough at it and it will break, it just can not stay on fire.
