Off topic; Why do I keep coming across a 502 Bad Gateway in any other thread? The only thread that doesn't give me that is this one. This is strange...
I'm getting the same problem with most topics, but changing to Google Chrome "fixed" it for me... so, i'll be surfing the minecraft forum with chrome until it gets fixed and can go back to my beloved firefox...
Hm... Water in Nether just sounds completely outta place.

Clear your cache/cookies. That fixed it for me.
I can understand the whole no water allowed, given the setting, but I also think it ought to be included. Perhaps its mechanics can be tweaked a bit though. Such as: Water touching lava in Hell = evaporation (I have to agree, making oceans of Obsidian just like that is stupid and shouldn't be allowed). Perhaps water touching bloodstone having the same effect too.

Yes, in general, water touching anything other than the air that was not naturally generated in the first place should cause evaporation.
Yeah I realize the reason for no water in the Nether is to prevent Obsidian harvesting en-mass. In truth, that was something I was hoping to do myself D:
Here's my two cents on the matter: The only concrete reason I can think of for why water doesn't exist in Nether is because of the large amount of lava existing in it. If you want water to be brought into the equation more, you need to replace those lava seas with something that won't result in a massive collection of Obsidian.
What I would replace the lava with (Not all, but the majority) would be some sort of acidic fuel gel, ala Metroid Corruption's Bryyo. Same concept really: Have seas of this semi-glowing acidic substance that's a.) freezes in the contact of water and b.) is useful in the empowerment of contraptions. Rather than replace the gel block with ice though, I'd propose the water contact to just simply create a half-block of it on the surface temporarily.
While this would fix the lava amount, it would create a void in Nether's main light source. As such, a new block would be needed to create light. In this case, I'd create another light-generating block for Nether, but make it so it's about as hard to mine as Obsidian (Makes it more permanent.)

You can harvest obsidian, just fill buckets with lava and cool them down on the construction site so you don't even have to spend hours breaking them with a diamond pick.

lava casting is fantastically quicker than using a diamond pick and taking 15 seconds to get one block (and if you do this while on anything but peaceful you're not gonna want to stick around in any one place for to long). just go into the nether with most of your inventory filled with buckets and load up.
I also think water should be allowed in the Nether. Terraforming a patch sounded like an interesting challenge before I tried.
Ideally the evaporation should be an effect of the red Nether blocks because that would mean we could use that function in interesting ways outside of the Nether.
The argument against obsidian seas is valid though (especially on SMP servers where people would have no self control).
In addition to the red blocks causing evaporation, due to the implied heat in the Nether, contact with lava causes water to evaporate as well - there you go - no wiping out the lava seas with a single bucket of water and people that want to have crops, fishing ect in the Nether can do so. Notch? What say you?

If water was possible in the Nether, you can basically say goodbye to the lava.
PlanetSide 2 Megathread because why not?
But its like the feeling of exploration and colonization that is the thrill
I actually spend most of my time in hell, trying to colonize it.
But, I have to hack in the water.
I mean, come on, whats cooler then turning a cruel, mean, world into a lush, paradise?
Nothing, of course.

Currently working on an epic bridge across a rather expansive lava sea. Get a few blocks through, accidentally slide of the edge to far XD
I like the challenge though, makes it more rewarding when I make it off my little cove my gate is in.
And just seems cool looking across a vast pool of lava and seeing places you cant quite get to, gives me a thrill

Just my thoughts.

Also I don't even know if opening that many portals would cause the game to die though. I'm sure it would...

Dude.
There's Mushrooms of both kinds everywhere.
Just grow some trees and make some soup, bro. + =
