My first experience with the new hell/nexus/slip world.. has been a stressful one.
Cutting out alot of details, the story went as follows. I spent the time to build a nice mid-evil looking portal room on the very top of my castle. I cautiously ignite my newly built portal for the first time.. stare in awe at the fancy swirly effects and sounds that you just can't recreate via screenshot.. and I walk inside.
Instead of appearing in a flaming gigantic cave full of monsters as I had expected from the many screenshots and posts I've read.. I instead appear inside of a tiny cave littered with a few random flames, and the sounds of screams ringing in my ears. My senses are on full alert, and I mentally mutter to myself.. "Wtf?". I hesitate a little, then start mining away at the walls. I find that I can mine surprisingly fast here, but I also find that my mining picks are being eaten up like candy. But what choice do I have?
Assuming I must be buried in my little portal cave, I start mining a 3x3 staircase, heading for the surface. About 15 mining picks and about 30 nervous panning motions later, I hit adminium. I mentally mutter to myself.. "...wtf?".
By now, I'm running low on picks and confused as to where I am and what the noises are coming from. I run back down and jump back into the portal for supplies. As I step out from my purple haze, I realize.. I'm nowhere near my castle. And it's pitch dark. And I hear the sounds *Hiisssssss* and *BOING*. O.O I take an arrow to the head and instinctively start sprinting in a panic and stumble down a hill, when I start noticing some familiar landmarks. I change to their direction and keep running. After a few seconds, I see my castle walls show up in the distance. I'm able to fire enough arrows as I run backwards to kill one of my followers, and then run an S pattern along the country side to prevent death from the rest (difficulty is on Hard, the hillside is crawling with spawns). Finally amongst the safety of my gates, I'm still thinking "wtf?". But at the same time, I don't care. I'm hooked on the danger of it, and the pure creepyness of not knowing what's going on in the slightest. I make a fresh suit of leather armor (yeah, I know) and load myself up on picks and some random construction blocks (glass, stone, etc), then charge to the top of my castle.
Upon re-entering the portal to the unwelcoming sounds of my little portal cave, I quickly go to work on a 2nd staircase, this time leading downward. I make it about 10 blocks down, when suddenly I notice a hole. A glorious hole! I run up to the edge and attempt to peer down into the vast cavern below me, when I see movement. Something white, big, and hellbent on squeezing through my tiny little hole in the ceiling. As soon as I saw the eyes on him and his 2 buddies pop open and glow red, I instinctively backed up before even thinking, just before the floor asploded into bits. O.O
Leaving out more and more details.. I ended up replacing the cavern ceiling with glass blocks so I could keep an eye on the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Monsters, and ended up using some 120-ish glass blocks to finally make my way to a giant stalactite with which I planned on using to build a staircase to the cavern floor. Upon mining into it, I found a large (20 or 30 blocks wide) near perfectly round natural cave near the bottom, filled with pig monsters. I didn't count them, but at least 20 of them. Being my first encounter with them, and noticing their yellow swords.. I nervously walk out to examine them (I heard they were peaceful, but ya never know). I examine their little pig cave, and the room has multiple windows looking out into the cavern, one of which has a pocket of the yellow glowing.. brimstone is it called? Anyway, it's almost too perfect. Almost like it's an intentional little pig village, which is really cool. I ended up having ghasts bombard me through the windows though, and while it was really fun, I think I had a little too much thrill for the moment. Tail between my legs and out of glass to cover the windows of my new future pigman base, I head back for the portal.
I step out of the purple haze and pop out into pitch dark again. I decide I better secure my portal before I save and quit, since apparently coming back at night is becoming a habit. I build a frame out of red cobblestone and decide to head back, only to be totally taken by surprise by a creeper and launched up and over a cliff (I jumped at the exact time he exploded, launching me). Now my armor is seriously dinged (leather FTW!?), my health is low, and there's skeletons after me. Try as I might, I didn't make it home this time. I put up a good fight, but I got cornered at a cliff with next to no HP. I turned and saw water at the bottom of the cliff... my only chance at survival was to make it to the water. I jump. I was 1 block short. Items everywhere.
Despite it not quite being light yet, out of irritation I swim straight for the cliff to nab my items, and while taking a few arrows, I luckily retrieve all my stuff, hastily return to my fortress, and save/quit/sigh of relief.

Is it normal to have your portal in hell be created in the ceiling of the cavern? And is it normal for the portal you arrived with to return you to a different location in the main world? (way out in the boonies..)
I was under the impression that 2 portals would be made in both worlds, linked together in pairs. The ones in hell world being much closer to each other, hence the potential for fast travel.. Will I have to find a 2nd random portal in hell world to be able to arrive back at my castle, even though my first portal is crammed in the ceiling? O.O
My first experience with hell was similar. I had a small cave like yours, but it opened up at one end to a similar pigman village. And the village overlooked a cliff to a lava ocean. When I went back through, the portal took me to a cave god knows where, connected to a vast cave system (which I ended up exploring and finding a nice amount of gold). Digging straight up, placing dirt below me (because, like you I was low on supplies and had no idea where I was) and luckily narrowly missing a stack of gravel. And like you, I emerged god knows where, travelling in a direction I hoped my house was.
Next time I went, I made sure to take a compass, and a watch, since I wanted to know if it was safe to come out of the cave when I went back. This time, I decided to attack the pigmen. I found two off to the side of the group, and when I got close, they stared at me -- and then charged me! I quickly died, my iron armor doing nothing. I built about 8 stone swords and came back to reclaim my stuff. Once I killed the pigmen and grabbed my stuff, I was suddenly under attack from behind -- more pigmen attacking me! This continued until they ended up pushing me and all my gear over the cliff to the lava fall.
My question is, has anybody else been having trouble with aggressive pigmen? I had heard they were supposed to be docile until attacked.
Really nice, and much better than my first visit to Nether.
I created the portal, and after a few tries of running though it, lol, I stand inside and wait.
Upon reaching Nether, I find my self absolutely in the middle of nowhere.
I seem to be on the side of an upside down mountain, tip attached to a ceiling?
But I'm on a very small ledge on the side, just enough to walk around my portal.
So I begin to dig upwards.
After about 13 steps, I find myself face to face with the Big White.
After I respawn, I get the idea to create a corridor to protect me while I try to find a way to mine that sweet glowing stuff.
I take a few trips looking around in Nether, and decide to rebuild my portal elsewhere.
So I do, on top a small hill near my house.
Upon reaching Nether, I find myself on top of a huge ledge, surrounded by the Big White.
I am blasted off the ledge, and land on the ground with half a heart to spare.
After 15 minutes of trying to mine my way back up to the portal, I manage too do so and I promptly head home.
Cool enough I come out on a parallel hill by my house, but completely dark.
I run home and log off.
I was under the impression these portals would put us in a "safe zone".
I must have been mistaken.
That final explosion takes place AFTER he portals back to the real world. The one that launches him. Creeper obviously. (Lol. Rocket jump in Minecraft.)
Interesting story. I love how the human mind tries to make sense of completely random formations. (Pig cave with windows.)
I've set up a proper base in hell, with a fishing pool and some grass, might turn the back of it to a farm. (Hacked ice in to get the water and grass, I like the homely feeling they give)
So, I went in and started mining in to the walls (My first proper go into hell, in which I didn't run around and **** off pigmen and dodge fireballs) and make a small room opposite my portal. I branched a tunnel going downwards with a ladder into a nice mini pigmen village, and branched one going from the side of my main room (Which now had a furnace, large chest and crafting table on it) through the wall. I then discovered my base was actually right next to the roof, and that if I made a slip with my mining i'd fall to a painful death, which I did atleast 3 times in the process of tunneling. My tunnels branched through most of hell, with numbers of windows so I can see outside, although I didn't have any glass so I had to risk the ghasts. It's actually pretty fun dodging fireballs and patching up my base!
At one point I'd made some stairs, then the wall was ripped open when I jumped back from a ghast fireball through the window. They then bombed me until the stairs were gone, in their place a flaming pile of debri.
Anyway, alot of fireballs and tunneling later, I retreated back to my base (Running low on pick's) and decided that it would be good to start reinforcing my home. Well, I decided that after i shot a few ghasts and got my makeshift doorway demolished, leaving my little base open to attacks if I got unlucky. I quickly made a room around my portal out of cobble, having to constantly run back into my base and hide from ghasts until it was done. I then went back to the normal world and stocked up on arrows and cobble, then transformed my portal room, which was looking nice and fancy now, with arrow windows and my nice, explosion proof cobble. I changed the tunnel next to me into cobble once some pigmen decided to move in, to protect them, and because if that was smashed open then a ghast would get a vantage point to rip me up. Then I transformed my portal room into a tower, by digging into the wall to make stairs that looped around without putting me in the line of fire until I got back above my portal room and built the next floor (Which dug slightly into the roof)
I decided to make that my 'first line of defence', by making the whole room fairly open to attack by ghasts, but also giving me a great spot to fire from. I changed one of my long windows into a bridge (And THAT is hard to build and fun to run across when there are Ghasts attempting to melt you) across to what was soon to be my next tower. Halfway through construction of the bridge I had to stop to deal with about 4 ghasts who were hindering me to much, I consider myself pretty good at fighting ghasts, and I managed to fight these guys off with only one hit to me. Then I finished construction of the bridge and the top floor of my tower, and since then I've spent my time on the bridge, which is the best point for Ghast-slaying, shooting Ghast's for fun. I've hacked in a few stacks of arrows after that so I can have fun practicing my shooting skills, because missing a shot on a ghast from there pretty much means you lost an arrow permanently for no reason.
I would like to thank the person who wrote the guide for using INVedit on mac so I can shoot them ghasts down for fun!
After getting absolutely owned, I went back home, mined, upgraded and trained to my maximum potential and then returned to hell, armed with diamond armor and a bow with hundreds of arrows, some obsidian and many other items i required to wage war on hell. This is the aftermath of me fighting all those Ghasts + more (about 16 more)
you can see I have a small warbase, several Items needed in the war effort and yet more Ghasts coming. I made this archer perch out of stone so I can have a height advantage on the ghasts

cheater. You're supposed to brave the nexus with no strategy guides, no outside programs, and only a wooden sword!
1 1/2 hearts vs a dozen or more Ghasts will always equal Fail. That's just an insane number of Ghasts.
Better dungeon loot, bones in dirt, Witch hut loot, ect
What do you mean fake?
Above statement is false.
If I read it correctly, he never said there were.
Also, nice story. The portals are kinda glitchy, so that's why you got sent to the middle of nowhere, I believe.
