I have actually never been to the nether and I have been working hard to get obsidion.(My last river of 30 obsidion was now flooded with mobs guess i should remember to close doors.Thank you skeleton ) is it really worth it i mean all i see in videos is just lava some weird mossy red cobble stone some rock that slows you down and light rock (I mean thats cool if you want to light stuff under water.) and there are only two new mobs zombie pigs, and ghasts.none of them drop new items. Is there supposed to be an update to increase stuff in the nether it seems useless, but i am in no way complaining notch has worked hard to give us the update and i love the new textures im just wondering waht i am missing about the nether.
Right now there's not a ton of new stuff there, it's mainly the new block types (the red block burns forever, the brown block slows things down, and the lightstone emits, well, light) and the fact that there are two new mobs to play with. Ghasts are pretty freaky at first, though you get used to them. The zombie pigmen are kinda cool too, although they don't really do much yet.
Mainly, it's about the same as anywhere else in Minecraft, except mobs are around 24/7, there are only 4 block types native to the nether (gravel as well, but be careful with that - it tends to be hanging over thin air and collapses when you mine it), and there are MASSIVE lava lakes.
It's worth checking out at least once, and I've found the red stone to be extremely helpful while mining in the real world (saves me a lot of torches). I haven't done much with the lightstone or brown mud stuff yet so I can't really comment on those. Don't worry that you're missing out; everything in the Nether is really just used to enhance your experience back in the regular world. It's cool to build down there, though.

We loved you. We really did. You worked oka-- well, alright. Your graphics were go-- well, not so great. And you only bluescreened 1-- okay, well, more like twice a day. But then along came your younger, hotter sister, XP. and we fell in love. I know you can't understand it, and maybe never will. Just as how we ditched xp for Win 7. You're thinking in the old ways still, '95. We don't expect you to change, or even understand. But we love the Nether. And now, through my tears, I will say my final goodbyes.

Mostly what I've done in the nether is harvest everything, I've got a burning fort on an island of mud, and the ocean nearby is lit with dozens of glowing blocks. near the island of mud, at the mainland, I have 12 portals arrayed such that they all share sides with the other portals (2x3x2), and they all lead to the same portal in the nether.
I made 11 of the portals with harvested lava from the Nether.

Hey! Windows 95 was awesome during its era!
I mean, give me a valid choice at the time. Ok, maybe a Mac, but they're there just as much today.
Also, you're missing out on a lot in your story ^^
Where did Windows 98 go? 98 was a wonderful upgrade from the 95!

Yeah, that was kind of my big moment here. Sorry for boasting.
What do I do in the nether? Run around screaming because I somehow always manage to land a portal in the middle of 8-16 ghasts, or close enough that poking my head out draws them. T.T
If you are lucky enough to have a stable base in the nether (and i mean really stable... like "made of obsidian" stable) you can build some sort of trap to lure pig men into a hole or something to dispose of them easily and farm a ton of cooked pork chops. Thats what i try to do... even thought its very hard to do... and insanely time consuming to get all the obsidian you need to make it "ghast proof"
Nether is based on The Ways from the Wheel of Time series. It's supposed to be a really dangerous and scary place allowing you to quick travel, but the decision to use it or not can be a difficult one.
Build a forward command post and wage war against the pigmen until you can finally forge the chain of oppression and enslave their pathetic species for all eternity, allowing you to harvest their bacon goodness and finally sate the Bacons Gods hunger for fried greasy flesh.

Yo dawg we heard you like errors, so we put an error in your error so your server can die while it dies.

Why use obsidian when cobble works just as well? :tongue.gif:
Seems like no one's mentioned that when you enter The Nether, and walk, say, 60 Blocks, then build another portal and go back up to the normal world, you won't be 60 blocks away, but either 480, or 960 blocks away. (I forget if it's 1:8 or 1:16 for Nether World:Normal World.)
Mainly, it's about the same as anywhere else in Minecraft, except mobs are around 24/7, there are only 4 block types native to the nether (gravel as well, but be careful with that - it tends to be hanging over thin air and collapses when you mine it), and there are MASSIVE lava lakes.

Slay them lad.
I'v probably killed a hundred by now.
There are zombie pigmen.
There are flying octopi that shoot fire at you.
There is a type of block that will stay lit on fire forever.
How are you having a hard time thinking of what to do?
Great for traveling between distant bases.
I've found that the nether a great place to get food. I'm assuming Notch doesn't like mushrooms since they're all over the place in the nether.
this is how im using it. as stated elsewhere, the mats have uses in the regular world.
but a nice big stable house in the nether is a nice feeling of accomplishment.
