Pumkins, fire, lava, and glowstone all produce the same level of light. (The light extends one more than torches) However all of these objects require one block which you cannot walk through, which would mean putting them out of the way.
Most people will light their mines like this:
The torch is attached to the wall, assuring maximum space efficiency, and you can pass through torches.
However, Making a system like this...
...would accomplish nothing, that extra square of light would be negated because it must be placed aside.
imo glow stones need to break into glow stones. then you can place them in a furnace to break them down into smaller parts.. that, or the powder can be fired back into a glow stone. i would rather have the blocks than a lantern unless the distance they cover is the same.. and you can make about 10 per glowstone block.
I've heard they disappear if you place them in the main world. At first this seemes like a glitch but if you think about it, it's probably because they will be used to make lanterns and Notch may not want people using them as a substitute for lanterns.
