last night with the new Update I decided that since hte mobs whre spawning much faster (and to me, made the game way better) to explore as far as I Could without dying. I explored far more of the world then I have in any other game (of minecraft, makes for some huge savegame files). BUT in all that exploring I found 1 (yes, ONE) pumpkin... I have seen more slimes than Pumpkins.. And I had mostly green areas.. My LONE pumpkin was on a hill with nothing around it for at least 5 spaces (as in above it, leaves, etc) When I first saw it I thouhgt it was new type of Wood. And strangly enough after at least 30+ hours playing Minecraft (before the patch and after) I discovered my first CLAY.... thought I had found a new block, but was told its just clay and been in game for awhile.
I still haven't found a pumpkin :sad.gif: I heard they grew over dungeons so I looked for pumpkins to help me find a dungeon. Nothing yet.

Found a group of 8 pumpkins in the middle of a large field; no trees, water, or anything around them, including a dungeon. Using Cartographer I found a dungeon about 200 blocks or so away, but I don't think that's close enough to prove causation. There does seem to be a correlation, though, with many people finding them near each other. I'd just venture to say they're more likely to spawn in the vicinity of a dungeon, but they don't have to.
Just found a patch of seven of them on a newly generated world.
I found them on the sides and top of a small (maybe 10 blocks high total) hill. There were a few trees around, including one near them at the top of the hill, but they weren't in its shade. There weren't many trees and they weren't notably big. The grass and foliage color seemed to be just about the default-- that is, the grass color on the tops of the blocks matched the color on the sides almost exactly. The surrounding area was more desert than anything else.
The only other sizeable patch of them I've found was on a different world. There the surrounding area was more snow than anything else, but, again, they were on the sides and top of a relatively small hill (this one was maybe 15 or 20 blocks high) and again it was in relatively neutral colored grass and foliage and a few scattered trees.
Those of you who have found more than one pumpkin are lucky. I've generated a 13mb world and have only found one so far (on a low ledge by a cliff of all places). But then I stumbled across 5 dungeons on that same map, so maybe it's the generator's way of balancing things out. :tongue.gif: Gonna try generating a new map sometime to see if my luck improves with pumpkins.
Sorry you guys are all having so much trouble with it. about 5 minutes after spawning a new world after the update i found a patch of 5 pumpkins.... odd :smile.gif:
interesting that they tend to spawn above dungeons, i hear a lot of mobs around that area from a mine i built, but i haven't found dungeon yet, i must be close to it and may try digging towards where i found pumpkins now that i read this thread!
honestly, I think they will respawn? over areas you've been to. not like pre update... but ok, say you've surveyed an area. I swear I saw NO pumpkins then a few "days" later I came across a patch. I can't imagine that I'd miss those bright orange things... which brings me to my hypothesis...
so to test this, if you come across any, put something like a sign or torch or mark of some kind there and check back each new day. I wonder if they'll come back!
