Yes, there's a new weapon, but what is it? Well, it can pull enemies up and let fall damage do the rest, or grapple (and damage) pigs to you. What is it?
THE FISHING ROD
Out of supplies to make swords and besieged in my new tower by skeletons I couldn't just smack them around, but I noticed I had three sticks and two string. I made a fishing rod, and one by one, pulled and dropped all the skeletons to their demise.
The fishing rod can pull any length, since the string goes on forever, but it's the momentum which limits it. If you just swing downwards, there's no force to stop it, letting you grapple enemies and pull them towards you until you let them fall to their death.
Used correctly, this is the most powerful weapon in Minecraft now.
My testing with the fishing rod hasn't come up with quite the same results.
While mobs and animals that get hit with the rod's hook blink red like they were hurt, it never seems to kill them, even if they're damaged near to death beforehand. Further, if you cast the hook straight up and let it hit you, it deals no damage (though it makes you flinch).
As for the distance, it seems like there's a maximum horizontal distance it'll travel, but not vertical. If I cast it off a cliff, it'll only go so far, but then fall straight down to the bottom. It also seems to break the line if you hook it onto a entity, and then move too far away from it, though I haven't tested exactly how far this is yet.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

I hit a chicken in upwards of ten times with a rod and it didn't die. So yeah, I don't think it does damage.
It is fun to pull things around though. I only wish the rod didn't break so fast. Maybe Notch could add an iron rod?
Actually, it's pretty easy to just fill your whole inventory(or almost full) with fishing rods because the people that have been playing Minecraft for, well, a while, probably have like a large chest full of string.
Also, can someone take a video of them messing around with it until it breaks? I just don't have the patience to do so myself.
Okay but if you have it out already, after reading this thread, are you going to switch away from it?
After reading this thread maybe not, Id probubly give it a go if I wasnt carrying anything overly important. But really youd need a cliff or some lava nearby if you wanted to take them out right? I dont think the rod does that much damage just on its own.

Still I'd like to have the room. I like to carry lots of stuff.

I think what he did was have a spot above the skellies, hook them, drag them, and drop them to death.
Death by falling damage.

Im pretty sure when I have 3 creepers running towards me Im NOT going to be pulling out my fishing rod.....
Sure if you hold them to your face. Just make a massive tower with holes in the bottom to pull up. It's catch and release-to-their-death fishing. :biggrin.gif:

You just gave me a most excellent idea for a glass bottom tower!

hoooo-kay.
I'm filing that in "does not work well". (crazy close calls there btw).
Also, is golden apple supposed to be infinite? Or is this some sort of cheat. Might actually make it worth the gold..

I jerked a spider to beat it to death with a scary fish!
