Then everyone would have been whining that he didn't release the update like he promised to.
Then he shouldn't have promised such a specific deadline IMO. If, for example, he had just said "it will come out in the week beginning 1st November and privately aimed for a release before the 31st, he could have over run by a few days and people would still be happy that he brought it in on time.
However, he didn't. He publicly imposed a specific deadline on himself, released code as it was for no better reason than it was almost midnight and a lot of people's ability to play the game broke in the process.
He publicly imposed a date to make people happy, since it sounds like people were on the QQ train already.
He was trying to reward the community, during ALPHA stage, it was released with some bugs, and people just don't give a damn.
Again, his job is NOT easy at all. Someone else come in here and tell me they can code everything he has done, on top of the pixel art I'm sure he did himself before he had a staff, and tell me it's easy.
This was a "For kicks and giggles" game until it became viral. I can't reiterate enough that I'm SURE he was NOT expecting the sudden influx of people spamming his game.

I might be wrong about it, but I'm pretty sure he had a deadline like that because it was a Halloween update. Hell/The Nether/Australia, Pumpkins, Stuff like that. Wouldn't have made much sense if he released Jack-o-Lanterns on Christmas or something.
Its like this whole board is full of haters and fanboys. And for every hate thread there is one of these.
My point is that Notch is a person like anyone here, not a demigod. The hate threads also dont get to him, he probably doesnt even open them.
Dont get me wrong I have the utmost repsect for Notch, i just dont worship him.
He doesn't have to open an obvious hate thread to maybe feel slightly demoralized from all the filth being spewed from people. He worked hard, and if he goes on the threads to seethe fruits of his labor, to see pure hate?
Like you said, he's human. It's not easy for anyone to put a lot of work into something, then have such negative (and poorly constructed) criticism.
No i'm saying i wish he withheld the update until the main stuff worked: grass (the sides), portals, armor, inventory loss on death bug, and now new maps don't even have caves and dungeons with lava etc. I love minecraft but some of this stuff makes me not want to play it. So i'm not. Until it's fixed. And everyone always acts like Notch is just coding on the side. It's his job. "OMG i worked 10 hours monday!" Good, you can work 10 hours tuesday, wednesday, thrusday, and friday too. That's what everyone else does... Hiring lawyers, a staff, and buying an office is also his job
Notch WAS coding on the side until very recently, when he realized how much he could make a living off of it.
As far as I know, the inventory drop on death has been fixed already, I don't know what you mean by "new maps not having caves and dungeons..." cause I have plenty?
I think you're just trying to find anything you can to complain about.
Also, I don't think you realize just how intense coding can be? I just started a programming class for College, and let me tell you, it's NOT easy peasy. It's lots of tracing code, sometimes which has been written poorly due to sleep deprevation etc, and then figuring out exactly why your code didn't do what you wanted. Then you have to re-write that, THEN figure out what bugs you may have just caused.
It's not a magical "code once, it's good" method. Give him a friggin break. He more than deserves every moment of it.
The inventory drop was fixed. As for the caves and dungeons thing someone on the bugs/glitch list said that they experienced this when generating a new level. I'm not trying to find things to complain about these are legitimate and obvious bugs. Also i know how hard coding is. I've actually made multiple shitty games. The main things that breaks this update for me is the portals not working properly. If he had just gotten that down before releasing it i would have been satisfied.
I love how 90% of the haters out there don't realize this game is an alpha and don't know what an alpha is. It's an unfinished product, with features being added, tested, tweaked, updated, and changed. With all that, there's bound to be bugs, some easier to smooth out than others, and no particular order in which it must be done. Notch will get to what he decides to get to. Minecraft has become so huge, and he is ONE guy. I guarantee you there's not a serious one-man-team developer out there who is on par with or better than Notch who would say he's doing a bad job of things. The very fact that he's given you the opportunity to play the game and in one way or another have some slight bit of say in how it goes is an absolute blessing you should be thanking Notch profusely for. If nothing else, be happy you bought it at half price and just wait until it's "finished". You'll have the full game without having to pay the full price.
I might be wrong about it, but I'm pretty sure he had a deadline like that because it was a Halloween update. Hell/The Nether/Australia, Pumpkins, Stuff like that. Wouldn't have made much sense if he released Jack-o-Lanterns on Christmas or something.
Well, aside from the fact he didn't need to do a holiday themed update anyway (and really, the Jack-O-Lanterns are the only overtly Halloween themed bit - and they could have been dropped if need be (other, more important, things were)), I didn't say make it so late that it comes out at Christmas. If it came out some time in the next 7 days, it would still be close enough to Halloween to be seasonal.
I also said that, privately, he could have aimed for the date he did. I'm only saying that he could have given himself a public cushion of a few days so that he didn't feel obliged to release the code in a fairly unfit and glitchy state just because it was almost the 31st of October. He was driven by the deadline, not by the state of the code. To me, that is the wrong way round.
I do get the impression from this update, and others that have gone before it, that Notch often leaves quite a bit until the last day and then codes like a madman to get as much done as possible. If that's what works for him then so be it. However, it carries some inherent problems with it.
I agree, maybe publicly announcing wasn't the greatest route to take. Makes people expect more.
But I think as a NEW large-scale game dev (like he is now) he's still learning HOW to prioritize things. I mean, when people are asking for a million and a half things, how do you know which to prioritize over others?
I agree, fundamentals first, THEN gimmicks, but hey, everyone likes the gimmicky stuff every now and then.
I think as the game grows, so too will his feel for how to build onto it.
Enjay is extremely right and much better at getting his point across without pissing 10 people off.
lol.
I was trying to do an but i couldnt seem to get it to work. Sigh i guess i'm just gonna go try to enjoy the game without even going in to the Nether because portals are bugged. It just so tempting but then i de-portal in some random spot.
Thank you so much for working so friggin hard on this game!
I doubt anyone could have done so much work in such a small amount of time. I have only played about a month, and I am SUPER excited to start playing the Halloween Update (just installed it this morning).
All I can say is KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK!!!!11!!1eleven.
Ignore all the haters. They be trippin.
Please note I registered to the board JUST to support you, sir.

Notch i respect all the work you have done and we all trust u will fix all the major bugs. SMP is laggy anyways so forget SMP health. even though halloween update feels "rushed" or "incomplete" you did your best, and you surpassed the communities expectations. ghasts are as hard as you wanted them to be, biomes are wonderful and the sunsets are a great artistic touch.
Good job Notch! Lots of work still needs to be done though. Rest up and hopefully you can get back into the groove you were in before creating a company from the ground up.
From the title, I expected to go into a hate thread expecting some 9 year old whining about the new update, so I was pleasantly surprised to see this thread. :smile.gif:
Lol same thing. Except it was a 9 year old complimenting him. (I assumed you were 9 because of the way your wrote your text)

How did my text imply I was 9? I would be surprised if a 9 year old could use fluent sentences and proper grammar and punctuation.
I think you're just trying to find anything you can to complain about.
And all others stating things referring to people that have complaints are just haters...
I think you're all just propping Notch up like he's god, your special idol that can do no wrong... just look at all the kiss-ass going on to get him to implement what certain people want and have him ignore everyone else that has issues with it. Just because you're getting what you want out of it doesn't make you guys right and anyone getting screwed wrong.
By the way, nothing ever got fixed (not just relating to this game, fyi) by the yes men praising his idol... things only get fixed when the people having problems with something come and make it known. So, quit hating on the so-called 'haters' you speak of, they're the ones getting your bugs found and fixed.
As for those that have issues with where he's taking the game, we've got legit concerns as well... I for one know that taking it the direction he is going is just going to alienate a massive chunk of the crowd and **** off a hell of a lot of people that paid for the main aspect of the game, and instead, are getting screwed over by more and more tedious tasks just to be able to do stuff... all for the sake of realism in a game, that doesn't have any real aspects of reality anyway, being implemented because of certain survival mode nuts that are whining about things being too easy (probably making it easier on their own), or about how ____ isn't real enough.
FYI, most of us with those gameplay concerns don't even come to these forums... the game was working just great before, and most people don't come to a forum unless they have a problem.
Personally, I have a major problem with this update, and so does the friend I bought it for whose machine is twice as powerful and more updated than my own... there is now excessive frame skipping going on that's making it unplayable, and my friend has a machine capable of running things for more resource hogging games than Minecraft. I used to have frame skips in certain spots, but now those spots are 10x worse, and I have it happening every 2 seconds / 5 steps, on any draw distance.
Yeah, the game's great, and Notch is great for making it, and he's getting rich because of it before it's even finished... but I hope he listens to those that first bought into it and made it popular, and gave him that money, who paid for the game for what it was, a lego style building and exploration game, not what these certain people getting features turning it into just another WoW clone with the main aspect starting to become more of a gimmick. We're the original base, and we're the majority.
That's not to say we don't want this new stuff, we just want the option to turn some of it on and off at will, like we can with the difficulty.
Keep up the good work, and please look at your original base fans, too, Notch. Don't get caught up in the backward bending supply curve, and have less quality on Minecraft for your base fans because you already got all the money you could want from it and care less about messing with it to make it work well for all of us. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backward_b ... _of_labour

If you'd read a bit more of the whole thread, you'd see I'm not putting him on a pedestal, and I'm not calling everyone who has a problem with the update "haters".
The haters are the people who come in, badmouth Notch WHILE complaining about bugs etc, calling him a shitty developer and a lazy ass.
Feel free to complain about the update itself, but the moment you start to badmouth at Notch, the guy doing all of this for us on his own time, you're generally just a douche.
Hell, even I have some problems with the update. But It's ALPHA. It's expected. So I don't care, and will GIVE PRAISE WHERE IT IS DUE.
He is not my god, my idol, or any other such nonsense, and nothing in the thread has implied such. I'm trying to be a SUPPORTIVE fan, that is all.
