That makes sense, but then Hell world isn't actually generated until you first go there, right? So then why not have it automatically generate a safe place for your portal in the spot it should be?
Same thing here though I am not complaining, two portals formmed I walk through one and boom 1000's of blocks away from home lol neat but a little weird.

Because Portals are linked to a spot. Imagine your location ending up in the middle of the lava lake, so another portal is made. If it memorizes what portal it got called from, you could have 2 portals mere inches apart, where the distance between their real world equivalents is your entire world in width.
As for automatically generate a safe place: That would only work the first time. Any future portals suffer from the same issue.

Hmm oke, but the lake was just an example. It could be other reasons why the portal could not be created on that spot...
Mrm, seems like it's chunk-based, so it would be rather rare for the game not to find a spot for a counter portal in an entire chunk (or perhaps even a 2x2 chunk? I dunno how it works exactly.)
When you enter your portal and generate a new one in the Nether, the two portals should both be given a random, matching digit. When reentering that portal, it will take you to the portal on the normal world with the same digit.
This, essentially, is what isn't happening. As I understood it, the original intention was for portals to create a kind of linkage, and to create a matching portal in the opposite realm only if no valid portal could be found to link to. Notch stated a while back that a single portal in the Nether could connect to several portals Topside - obviously to solve the problem that you could easily fit 4 or even 8 portals Topside in the space of a single portal in the Nether.
Either that linkage is not being created (causing portals to default to creating a new mirror portal instead of looking first at the linked portal) or the process that looks back Topside for a linked portal is not checking the whole chunk, particularly through the whole Z (depth) axis.
Essentially this is just a bug, I'm sure. What I believe is supposed to be happening is that when you use a portal (entering or exiting) it should be generating a pointer that goes back to the portal you came from (if such a pointer doesn't already exist), thus creating the needed linkage. This just isn't working right yet.
I'm not sure that Notch is aware of this problem, but I'd think that he is - at least passingly aware that something's wrong with it.
1. Created first portal in my base (P1)
2. Walked through into the nether
3. Went back through portal to the normal world
4. Came out P1 (yay, connected!)
5. when back through P1 to mine some stuff
6. Came out near my base at a new portal (P2) odd
7. While walking around my base i found another portal (P3)
8. While in the nether you always exit out of P2 no matter where you came in
9. Built another portal (p4) a long way away at my spawn)
10. p4 ALSO connects to P2
So, through trial and error, I made this walkway and built portals in the nether until one of them linked back to my original portal. The obsidian at the right of the image was the portal my above-world portal originally linked to.
When the frames are made of obsidian, the process is quite time-consuming. Hopefully notch will get it sorted out so that linking portals is more intuitive and automatic.
I finally made an account here because of this problem and I'm relieved to see that I'm not the only one experiencing this, I was thinking maybe my save got screwed up.
anyways, my problem seems to be slightly different, like I got sent back REALLY far away. in fact, this was a save from before the update, so I didn't have any biomes in that world, but I got sent back to somewhere where I believe it's autumn - the trees and grass have more of a brownish tinge. I've done a little exploring and don't recognize anything and I don't have a compass, redstone, or iron on me since I didn't think I'd have a need for any of that in the nether. apparently I'll have to find some redstone and iron before I can find my way back home.
did I somehow get sent back to an unexplored chunk? maybe I'm just gonna feel like an idiot when I find my base over the next hill? I never did explore north or east of my base.

Unless you hit some kind of glitch, the portal back should not have sent you more than a couple chunks away. My first instinct would be that you're out in a bit that you hadn't explored. Take a bearing with the sun from where you are now and venture out a little ways South and West to see if you are in those unexplored gaps.
If that doesn't work, then grab Cartographer and map out your world, and see if you can figure out where you popped back up. You should be able to see the Obsidian gate on the surface.
I really hope that this is a bug, and not a feature. I want Portal Basement and Portal Nether to be connected- Basement leads to nether, re-entering portal Nether leads back to my basement. Right now, enter Portal Nether leads to Field In The A Mile East Of My Basement, which to me is stupid. I know some people were all excited "ooh, unlimited obsidian" but... they're already IS unlimited obsidian, just get some buckets, it's easy. Now. if Portals turned into CLAY blocks, I'd be excited, but as is, I find obsidian useless because it's the most boring thing to mine. Takes forever.

That's a very good idea! Man, Notch really needs to hear this...
My advice: Hack 64 ladders and a pick into your inventory with INVedit and make a shaft out. You should probably be able to see your house when you surface. You could also hack in a compass if you know where your house is from your spawn.
"BUT THIS IS CHEATING!!!!"
stfu. The game cheated by putting him into a big random cave when it was supposed to bring him back home. Minecraft definately cheats. You cant even win.
I understand the lake of lava thing, but it can be an annoying glitch. If your portal in hell is displaced, can't we just make those two link? So you go back thorugh the displaced portal and end up back home, instead of at your real hell location, which is almose always underground.

I was just about to post my explanation, but you nailed it straight on. I would make a clever .gif of it if I didn't just break my index finger.

so tired of people pointing that out. But i need my minecraft fix. And without buggy portals. And nothing's gonna change that: Alpha or not.
You cant ask everything from a game that isnt even released in BETA yet. It'll be fixed in due time.
