So i went in my portal and went to the nether, then I walked around a bit got some blocks and came back through and instead of taking me home it took me to a big random cave ive never seen before near the bottom of the map, what do i do?
When I first did it I spawned up in a snowy mountain, the portal I built was on a beach by a lake. I quick search revealed that I was really close to my base(my base was actually in the snowy mountain). In an effort to fix it I broke the gate on top of the mountain and went back into the nether from my gate.
When I tried to come back I ended up on top of the mountain again, in a new gate next to the gate I destroyed.
No its not odd at all. It just that the location for the corresponding portal in The Nether is not available. (there is a lava lake for example). So the game looks for a spot where the portal can be build in the nether. This can be quite far. If you go back the game creates a corresponding portal on the normal world.
Solution: fill that lava lake with something and recreate your portal, it should be good now.
Yeah, I think notch is aware of this glitch.
Useful bit of advise? Build a base around the second portal. Bring compass.
Both portals take you to the same portal in nether. It may be useful.
It's not really a glitch. If the portal was created on the exact same spot as it should be, you would end up falling into a lava lake for example, thats why the game looks for another spot to create an exit portal in the nether.

That's not what they're talking about.
When you make a portal and enter it, the game spawns you in Nether, inside of a portal which you can use to travel back to the normal world.
That portal back to the normal world is supposed to take you back to the portal you originally made in the normal world.... The one that you traveled through to arrive there. Instead, sometimes (but not always) it creates a new portal in the normal world, and spawns you there instead. It's usually not far from the one you made, but sometimes spawns you in a tricky situation or dangerous place, so it can be annoying.
I think it has something to do with the fact that you are allowed to build portals close together, so the fast travel scale is bent at small intervals. Also, even though distances are supposedly magnified by 16, the portals are the same size in both Hell and the Overworld, leading to possible inconsistencies.
Does anyone know why the portals don't portal you back to your base? Seems to make the portals semi-worthless as a means of transportation. There already exists the danger of ghasts & pigmen, I don't see much of a reason to make it even less useful as a means of transport. I was really looking forward to being able to teleport back into my base.

In the beginning, Notch created the Nether and the Earth, and in it he made a man of sand and called him Steve. Notch made Steve strong so that he may punch wood, and lo, Steve was to have dominion over all square things.

Lol this is exactly what I was talking about. Because the place for a portal in the nether is not available, it creates one on a good spot nearby. Location wise these 2 portals aren't connected to each other so when going back, the game creates a portal that correspond with the one that the game build in the nether.
<Khusa> the creepers are baby dragons
<Gunmage> Instead of spitting out fire they hold it in until they burst like balloons
<Lisimba> So if you would give a creeper a laxative, would it turn into a real dragon?
Or it could be that it's not above lava but below the portal is inside of a rock. So it just moves the portal for you.
I was lucky where 2 out of the three portals I placed were in open areas. The third I had to dig away some rock so that it take me back to the right place. I'm now connecting the portals via a stone pathway with aerial coverage from ghasts.
I will soon be able to fast travel from three of my greatest settlements WITH safety.
And i think it may be even be possible that the second portal location in the normal world is also not available. So when you enter that portal and go back to the nether, it's possible maybe that your at another unknown location again.
this is my problem
i dont have enough tools to get back to surface, and no wood so i never will. I just wanted to see what the nether looked like =[
When I tried to come back I ended up on top of the mountain again, in a new gate next to the gate I destroyed.
Seems like natural gates really want to exist...

If you go in the Front of the portal, it will take you somewhere in front of where the portal is.
if you go in the back it will take you in the back of the portal
And if you Punch upwards, you will hit your home :wink.gif:
Easier said than done:

Saved, thank you for this!
