I find it hard to believe that there is any kind of AI on the pigmen. If they learned anything at all, it would be not not walk into fire, and that is what i see them do all the time. Someone who can look at the code and figure it out should let us know if there is anything like this at all. My money is on "no"
When I was first in "nether world" I attack a pigmen...I was attack by all pigmen after. Then when peace returned, I learned that pigmen hate lava and love your fort/hideout. After I tried to see why pigs are so smart so I got a pig into my fort where no other pigmen where, and kill the pigman, pigmen attacked me again. I think Pigmen may speak to each other, so no getting away with killing :C.
Now If I could use pig men to kill things I would give them a bow, how can they kill the Ghasts with out a bow?
All the "screams" are from the Ghasts accidently floating into lava.
Here is the proof:
Go there and listen to the sounds that the Ghast makes.
Zombie Pigmen make awkward oinks, so no need to worry about them making random screams.
Anyway, not trolling, just thought I would clear that up. It is pretty terrifying, nonetheless.
Have you guys tried dropping weapons and armor to the pigmen yet? ;-)
Someone test this!
I tried giving them a gold shovel to them... they didnt take it, so i tried giving them my half depleted stone pick... then a ghast spawned so i ran away. D:
Next im going to try to give them bread or fish.

I have been studying the pig men very closely, and I even tried (and failed) to defend them when a horde of ghasts attacked. They do seem to learn, but I've only seen this with battle strategies (I think) they use during attacks.
Someone should ask Notch on twitter about this.
I haven't experienced what you are talking about(mostly because i'm still working on my topside map to much to go into hell) but i have noticed that the pigs, well, they seem to know who i am. Whenever you walk up to a pig, they look you directly in the eyes. This is pretty significant. So this could also carry over with the pigman, except they are more advanced!
Also, does anyone else's pigmen carry gold swords?
I had this idea before!!! But a few people rejected it. If we can get enough people to support this, maybe we can get Notch's attention and get some sort of mod or addon (maybe player made) that allows creation of blueprints.
I've thought of this as a great way to share your ideas with other players as well. If someone wants to learn how to build something, instead of telling them, just hand them the blueprints and it could go through a step by step guide on how to build something.
I WOULD LOVE THIS SORT OF THING. It could have multiple screens as well. One screen would show the items required and another would show the preview of what it looks like, or maybe it could create an outline on the ground to show where to place it as well (that might be a bit much though).
This could also tie in with magical structures or anything else like a beacon or waypoint that could be added in the future.
PM ME OR NOTIFY ME IF YOU CREATE A THREAD ABOUT THIS. I will be 100% willing to support it.
We need to gather support and create a thread!
You guys are essentially describing a sandbox RTS. That doesn't sound like much fun and doesn't seem to be the kind of game Notch intends to create. At least, it's not the kind of game I would like to play.
