So far I've seen random portals being spawned (I've counted 5 so far).
And now the original portal I've built only works one way. -.-"
The portal I use to get back (which happens to be the same one everytime) drops me into a random cave.
I do hope this gets fixed soon.
Now, I'm on my way to dig a hole connecting them.....if I can find it.
Yeah It happened to me once so far. It happened when I was trapped in the nether due to the portal stopped working and I had no so I killed myself. And after going back in there there was another portal next to my current one.
Just for the record this is not a bug!( EDIT: Notch does consider some of the behavior a bit of a glitch/bug so he consideres it a bug, so as to the fact of it being a bug it's true, but it's more a glitch and you can overcome/adapt to it.)
Heres why I say that and how I can prove it, go back to that first portal you made, go through it, when you come out the other portal look around, what your looking for is this, inaccessable terrain. That can be a gap, a lava lake, a whole bunch of hell stone or whatever you want to call it. Now go back through the gate.
If/when you come out the other side it's somewhere else then your other portal, simply look around for the orignial portal you made/entered the nether in. Once you found it make note of the direction, and how far it is. Now go back through that first portal you made, when you come out look in that same direction you made note of.
Thats direction is the place where the portal would be, but if something causes it not to be able to spawn there it will look for the nearest spot too. That spot could be a ways and when you do the conversion bewteen the nether and the real world well it does it places it quite a ways.
So to clear this example up look at this here(think of this as a top down view):
Above is the portal ( ) you built in the real world you go through the portal into the nether and come out with this:
In this example the is some sort of obstruction, lava, mountain of hell stone, whatever. The is the ground in the nether, so now we go back through and we end up with something like this in the normal realm.
As you can see it made another gate much father away. Thats because if you look at the corelation in our first two examples, it can not make the gate in the nether at the same basic postion because of the obstruction so it finds an avalible spot and places it there. Since that spot is a few blocks away (in this example) when you go back through you end up with another portal farther away then intended. This is whats happening, and why people are finding odd results with there portals.
In my case since my wasn't to far and I was noiced ing this I tried to just dig in the nether toward the location where the portal would of been if there was no obstruction. In other words I removed the obstruction lets say a mound of hell stone and built a new portal only a couple blocks away from the generated one, so for example we end up with something like this:
Now when I go through that new portal I end up back in the first portal I made, why simple it's closer to the postion bewteen the nether and the normal world, even if it's not exact as long as my nether portal connecting to the normal world is within the radius it will look for an existing portal, it finds the first one i made and uses it instead. And also if I go back through ino the nether I will come back out the new portal i made in the nether instead of the one it generated. All thats left to do is tear the other two down and your good.
It's odd but it has a lot to do with how notch has the math programed in. Whats important to understand is if theres an obstruction it will look for the cloest place to generate a portal. Since we have the 1:16 ratio a few blocks in the nether to properly generate the portal can in turn make it corelate a lot farther in the normal world. I know this is a lengthy explnation and hopefully notch and a few others will put more light to it better then I can. But thats whats happneing, so it's really not a bug, it's just the way the system/math works for generating portals.
Well Notch should make the portal in the Nether connect only with the portal that generated it.
Understood the problem with that is portals would generate in odd places that could cause real bugs and issues like a portal in the middle of a lava lake, or inside it, or an ocean or even under the world etc. Is it something that will be cleaned up and made better i'm sure it will, i'm just trying to explain why this is hapnning so people can know about it and make adjustments for there portals acrodingly.
Yeah It happened to me once so far. It happened when I was trapped in the nether due to the portal stopped working and I had no so I killed myself. And after going back in there there was another portal next to my current one.
That isn't a glitch, if a ghast hits a portal then it goes out. You can actually restore it if you get a ghast to hit inside the portal again.
My game crashes everytime I go back into my portal from the Nether to the normal world. works fine going into Nether but not the other way. I lost everything I mined; twice.....

The threads about portals randomly spawning when u go back through them. Not if it going out is a glitch =P http://tinypic.com/r/350l312/7 i go thru my main portal and go back out and a new one always forms here, so i have to keep breaking them.

It is not a glitch or a bug it's how the system works and you can fix it up if you understand how it works. Please read my post further up, i try to explain it in great detail.

Thanks for all the info and visual guides on this. I haven't tested portals personally yet, but this info will definitely help me sort out all this seeming nonsense that others seem to be experiencing. I will try this method out and get back to you on whether it worked.
Portals are a very neat addition to the game, if controllable.

Not a problem, hopefully someone will post some sort of video or someting explaining it, I have one of my LP but well my LP is aways behind so it won't be up for a while, if someone dosn't come up with a video or go over it more then i'll try to do so. I'm glad it was helpfull I tried to make it clear and descirbed as possible witch makes it large so people can understand whats going on. Hope the info helps you nad enjoy the nether (hell) it's a blast....wait was that a ghast joke...damn lol
Nice research. Well done. Question though, as far as you can tell does the 2nd portal that is created in the overworld match the facing of the one in the nether? It seems that the one in the nether if it is not generated in the same place has a random facing.

Thanks, too me a little bit to figure it out but made sense when I thought about it mathmaticly...ahh that evil word lol anywayz....
Facing seems to be the same when generated it may only look like it's not the same, or the facing could be 100% random all i know is the corelation of witch side you looking from the portal in ethier direction will be the same when you come out the other side, so for example if i enter the portal -> that way when i come out the other side I will be facing that same direction -> an expermint to prove this is to go into the portal and wait for it to teleport you nd before it does just turn your view, so if i did the same example but turned around to face the way i came out when i come out the other portal i'll be facing <- that direction.
So even if the phsical genrerated portals them sevles arn't facing the same direction as the one you created orignialy the way your facing when you go through still does. Hopefully that makes sense, try it out and hopefully you'll see what I mean.
Yeah that makes sense. I'll play with that a bit. I was really wondering more about the direction the portals themselves were facing. Looking at your example lets say the original portal you made in overworld is portal "o1"
and since it would have been in a wall the nether portal doesn't match up so we will call this one "n2". Now since n2 is not targeting the same chunck that o1 is on it has to generate a new portal "o2". What I was wondering is, from what you've seen, do n2 and o2 seem to face the same direction since the game should not have any difficulty finding a spot to spawn o2.
Make sense?
I'll play with it a bit and see if I can find the answer myself, just wondering if you noticed a pattern.
I guess it would also depend if the game could find a suitable spot to spawn o2.
I would really insist you make a compass when you choose to go through a portal, just in case you end up somewhere random when you decide to leave hell.
Well Notch should make the portal in the Nether connect only with the portal that generated it.
And Apple should add in official support for anything that runs on Windows without any performance loss or issues.
Some things just cannot be done easily via code.

Yeah I get what your saying and personaly from what i've done yes it does as long as it has room to do so. So it can seem random I think but again goes back to having the area to generate the portal and if the portal you made to get to the nether is | that way but the only way to generate a new one in the nether to come out of is --- this way well thats where it can seem random I think. Definlty could use some more checking and testing.
I would really insist you make a compass when you choose to go through a portal, just in case you end up somewhere random when you decide to leave hell.
Good sugestion that way if its a lot father away when you get back to that orignal portal you have a general sense of direction of where to go in the nether and what was blocking it as well. Good in genreal if your doing random portals as well over distances.
