I rated it 8.
Sure, some may say that the new features, most notably biomes, are crappy, but I believe that they are a seed which will grow into something far greater. The biomes will soon be unique, large and filled with special fauna and flora. I am truly excited for the next update Notch sends our way. People need to think not of the negative features of Minecraft, but think about what Minecraft will be in the future.
That is all.
Please note that the name of the topic is "rate the update," not "rate the potential of minecraft."

Przerwap, upon looking at some code I had just written: "...Gav... That's not how programming works."
I rated it 8.

So? He has planted the seed for what is to come. Soon, biomes will be a little bigger, a little better. He can't create a fantastic game mechanic without something to work with.

By balance, do you mean make it totally worthless?
I gave it an 8. My only major complaints is the lack of working nether portals in SMP (at least in servers I've tried), the hundreds of mobs that now spawn, and obviously the glitch where you don't drop anything upon death.
I lost everything I had on me (blocks of iron worth of minecart tracks, gold from my watch, etc.) right outside of my base... All because a zombie snuck up behind me while I was in my inventory. He made no sounds at all. There was absolutely no warning. Unfortunately, not only do mobs hit hard now, but they also hit fast--the zombie took me from full health to 0 in about 1.5 seconds or less, fully armored. It would've been ridiculously easy to regain all of that if it weren't for the glitch.
Don't get me wrong, the Nether is excellent, despite the glitches it came with. However, I wasn't excited about biomes coming into the update, and I'm still not happy about them coming out. They just seem.. annoying. If biomes were somewhat bigger and had changing weather, then I would most likely enjoy them. However, at the current time, I do not.
Personally, I'm hoping that we will someday have the option to select from a biome-ful and biome-free world sometime in the future.

All that glitters is not gold.
Sometimes it's a DEADLY VIRUS.
Biomes are amazing. It's great that the terrain isn't just fields and 2-5 trees on some hills with the occasional mountain anymore. Now there's forest and deserts and huge mountains and snow valleys and oceans and the underworld and jungles. I love it.
I don't really have a problem with this update except for the fact that I'm not overly excited about the changes. Nether is cool but is, to me, pretty much useless. No recipes to speak of, except the watch. The biomes are cool, but they are too small.
Don't get me wrong here, I don't think the update is bad. I just think it's nothing special. I guess my expectations were too high, but that's my own fault. Notch did a good job with this update.
I give it a 10.
8 for the new stuff like hell and biomes. -2 for the errors like creating extra portals in safe zones and such which bothers me aesthetic wise. and +2 extra points for the constant trolls and the 1 spammers.
I gave it a five. Biomes are half-done (snow glitch, transition inconsistencies, size issues, a few of the things notch has mentioned them missing), and the Nexus/Nether/Hell/Disneyland lacks the main intended feature; use as a shortcut due to buggy portal placement, linking, etc. and teh constant chance that portals placed near each other will ruin all the linkings anywhere near them on both Topside and Below.
I gave it an 8.
8 is a sexy number.
Also, the bugs and mobs spawning in too well-lit areas is bs, as well that the glowing hell stone is too hard to obtain. (Destroy 9 and get 1, seriously?)
I rated it 8.

Even Jesus called the mustard seed small. It's not fair to rate each update based on what it will turn into because that would be unfair, considering MInecraft is gonna be like the best game evar. >_>
4 (was leaning toward 3). There was a lot of groundwork laid for potentially awesome stuff, but very very little of it is awesome yet... and might not ever be if he considers certain things "done" right now.
The major changes:
1) Hell - Completely pointless. Three types of blocks that do nothing useful (Australium glows faintly... ok? Red cobble stays on fire, which we already had before the update with logs. Mud slows you down, which is not at all interesting.) Portals don't send you the the right places (I walked in a portal, went to hell, came back, and ended up somewhere else??? That doesn't make any sense) And speedy travel is not very useful either, since there is nowhere very great to go, which brings me to:
2) Biomes - Potentially cool, but right now, WAYYYY too small. There needs to be a huge area of each biome where you can stand in the middle and not see either side as being an end of it. Otherwise, deserts just don't feel like deserts, etc. And also, there is no point to hell, because you can run into every biome with about 2 minutes of walking in the normal world. It doesn't help that the grass is really ugly now and altitude isn't taken into account, and there are none of the unique plants or anything else mentioned and transitions are still questionable. I still get a strong urge NOT to explore on my main maps, in order to hold out for better.
3) Fishing rod - fantastically awesome.
4) Bugs galore. And messed up SMP
5) Lack of any truly game changing changes... Main reason for giving it a 4. Sort of in a decent direction, but none of the dots have been connected.
Pretty much sums it up for me spot on. Love the game... meh on the update, but with work the update content COULD be great.
It's an update to an alpha game. I don't even see the point in "rating" it. To me, that's like rating the quality of a single tree that an artist just added to a mural.
Someday, when this entire process is completed, we'll have a finished product. I'll be curious to see what it's like then, but for now, it's just whatever it is at the moment, and soon it will be something different. Again.
I rated it 8.

Totally agree here, especially since he said that the graphics for biomes werent even in yet.. I really love the idea of the biomes, they just need more work is all. something tells me all the graphics are going to get an update eventually once his artist is fully on board. That being said, there are a few things that bother me with the update: the major one is the mob spawning in very will lit areas and the minor one is that the Nether sounds/screaming are extremely annoying. Other than that, decent growundwork for something great, but not great by itself. Im a patient guy, im looking forward to whats in store and hopeful that bugs get fixed (I may have to take getting rid of the Nether noises into my own hands, im not sure.
I voted a nine.
It's a game in alpha, it's an update that had to be fairly rushed due to a deadline. Of course there will be bugs! Take them in stride, and quit your whining.
Waa, the sides of the grass doesn't match the top, I want my money back.
The update is fantastic. The nether is insanely fun, the fishing rod is the damn fishing rod, the biomes look as good as they will get without a professional artist (no offence Notch, :tongue.gif:) The bugs are to be expected, and will be fixed. The SMP not being finished, christ, coding is hard! Coding for online games is hard! Coding for online games on your own with a deadline is hard! I would rather a game with lots of features than a game in pristine condition, the same as it came out, with no bugs.
TL;DR Quit your whining, great update.
In fact, i find it rather stupid that most of u don't even know the concept of backing up ur World/Save......it's super simple and i think it's common logic that u DO this before any update. Especially the fact that the game is still in alpha, not even beta, of course u'd have to do this.
I have several backups ready and i can restore back to v1.1.2 anytime i want
I had no idea you could do this, because no one ever told me.
Just because you think it's obvious, does not make something obvious. Just because someone else doesn't see what you see does not make them stupid.
I rate the update a 4.
Plusses:
* New music and sounds!
* Biomes are amazing. Exploration of the surface is now a lot more interesting.
Minuses:
* Monster spawns have been increased as you go deeper. If you go deep enough, monsters spawn in areas you've cleared out.
* The Nether is so lethal it's not that interesting. I tried it a couple of times and gave up.
'Tis me again! The current average score at the time of posting is 7.41 out of 10. The average raised by by .32 in two days!

This is exactly where the problem lies. You seem to think we should all play peaceful or hard mode. Well to tell you the truth, your definition of a challenge is not the same as mine. There IS a middle ground which many players fit into.

Minecraft is the meth of video games, try it once and you're hooked, and you'll stay up for 3 days when you're on it.

I suggest that Notch doesn't advertise as much as he did for the next time, or that he live up to the expectations.
I suppose a Christmas update will be done.
