4 (was leaning toward 3). There was a lot of groundwork laid for potentially awesome stuff, but very very little of it is awesome yet... and might not ever be if he considers certain things "done" right now.
The major changes:
1) Hell - Completely pointless. Three types of blocks that do nothing useful (Australium glows faintly... ok? Red cobble stays on fire, which we already had before the update with logs. Mud slows you down, which is not at all interesting.) Portals don't send you the the right places (I walked in a portal, went to hell, came back, and ended up somewhere else??? That doesn't make any sense) And speedy travel is not very useful either, since there is nowhere very great to go, which brings me to:
2) Biomes - Potentially cool, but right now, WAYYYY too small. There needs to be a huge area of each biome where you can stand in the middle and not see either side as being an end of it. Otherwise, deserts just don't feel like deserts, etc. And also, there is no point to hell, because you can run into every biome with about 2 minutes of walking in the normal world. It doesn't help that the grass is really ugly now and altitude isn't taken into account, and there are none of the unique plants or anything else mentioned and transitions are still questionable. I still get a strong urge NOT to explore on my main maps, in order to hold out for better.
3) Fishing rod - fantastically awesome.
4) Bugs galore. And messed up SMP
5) Lack of any truly game changing changes... Main reason for giving it a 4. Sort of in a decent direction, but none of the dots have been connected.
Agree 100% with all of this, but I gave it a 5.

When freedom is outlawed only outlaws will have Minecraft.
This update wasn't ready to come out. I lost nearly everything I've worked to achieve, because you don't drop items upon death. What a waste of time. Now I have to start ALL OVER AGAIN. Thanks. 2.
INVedit them back in. If you lost your items because of a bug, you have the right to hack them back in. Stop QQing
It's not a 10 because everything promised wasn't delivered.
can't go with 9 because portals are still a little buggy, i would have no problem with the randomness of where you port out, except that you shouldn't port out and be at a random portal you never created. You know, the whole. "My portal was there, so why didn't i port out there?" problem
can't bring myself to give an 8 because of torches not going out, after all the hubub on the forum i would have been glad if that had gotten done with.
however i am having fun. I would enjoy the randomness of porting out, if it was with a portal i made in hell and not the portal i expect to take me home.
so for now, 7-6.

Pros:
Biomes are alright (needs improvments, but it works for now)
Hypercube dimension is alright (needs more enemy/block variation)
F1 :biggrin.gif:
Cons:
Portals are broken (bad location choices, portals incorrectly linked, do NOT enter a portal in a minecart!!)
Ugly foliage, the grass/leaves look a bit iffy :\
Pigmen are overpowered (and/or armour is broken) it takes less than a second for pigmen to swarm and kill you
SMP didn't receive any updates D:
I gave it a 7, I'm happy to have the update. But it all feels a bit "incomplete".
This is one bun that needed more time in the oven.
7. The update did have a lot of new content but, Notch did get sidetracked.
Seriously, Notch was doing perfectly fine and on time until he started on biomes again. I wish he could quit being so adhd and finish something before he starts another thing. He is a brilliant coder there is no denying that but, for example SMP Health is way overdue and also it would have been nice for the Halloween update to be included for SMP. I mean really Notch and his biomes I think Notch just has a boner for biomes or something. Anyway it is still in Alpha so we should give him some leeway. As long as he is updating it is better than nothing.
10, sure lots of bugs, welcome to Alpha, this isn't release, and he rushed a date just to have content. I'm having TONS of fun in my new biomes and the Nether, and Fishing Pole update is at least 5 points onto the score alone. (fishing for creepers... I've done it..)
I am truly grateful for the game Notch has given us, and this update as well. However I have a few disappointments that affected my vote.
1 - I strongly believe that fish should be mobs, not items. I believe it doesn't take much to realize a lot of people would be happy if they had a little fish pond in their town, or even an aquarium. Other sea mobs would be a good idea as well, in my opinion.
2 - Hell is really cool and creepy, yet a little pointless, as another user before me mentioned.
3 - I overall think a lot more could have been added. I'm aware that coding is a very long, stressful, drawn out process. But I know that some of the coding was a quick fix that could have add some more creativity to it.
I gave it a 7. Because of the features added, new tiles, new sounds, ect. Basically, all of Notch's hard work.
However I am very disappointed that the SMP wasn't fixed. I was looking forward to that the most. To be able to play with my friends/clan and watch them get owned by zombies then "lawl" at them. Yea sure SP is fun, but you can't really go "oh hey look what I made!" You have to make a video or send them the save file, and can't personally show them.
I voted 1. The grass and foliage has been ruined in this update by Notch's totally ****ed attempt to make different regions change color. Once beautiful, bright and vibrant regions are now dark and completely unnatural looking. The color shades for the grass and trees are so incredibly plastic and flat looking, it hurts me in the soul. I seriously just stopped playing earlier. I no longer want to build, nor explore. The Nether isn't even enough to keep me playing. There's just no point to building if my creations and territory don't look nice. No reason to explore if everything looks so flat and bland and dark. No point in playing at all, really. Notch apparently has no idea what he's doing with the art direction. The reason the grass worked so well visually, beyond the nice, euphoric lime shade of green that was chosen, was because the bright color of the grass tops acted as a highlight while the dirt side blocks acted as a shade, which gave landscapes depth and form. Now it's muddled into one dark shade. There is no more form, no depth, no texture. Just these acrid, plastic greens that don't even work together. There is no more beauty. I can no longer bring myself to play. This update has ruined the game for me. I feel like a puppy just died :sad.gif:

In the beginning, Notch created the Nether and the Earth, and in it he made a man of sand and called him Steve. Notch made Steve strong so that he may punch wood, and lo, Steve was to have dominion over all square things.
I voted 9, some great stuff in this update, but some major bugs as well (which was expected from all of us who are realistic)
Mainly the inventory+death part is a bit of an issue, Im sure it will soon be fixed.
Also on my 3rd trip to the nether, I walked a long way, built another portal and jumped into it, popped out a long way away as I expected, but then on the return trip I appeared back in my house, with a new portal - in my house!!!
And it build itself right next to my chest, filled with diamonds and iron, and like 1028 redstone, 70ish gunpowder and all my hard earned TNT etc. If it was only one block over I would have lost it all.
Luckily I backed up my save, so it wouldnt have been the end of the world. But still 0_0

No reason to explore if everything looks so flat and bland and dark.
Really??? I like the new terrain, it adds a lot of interest. The old way was BLAND, same stuff over and over again.
Either way its still wip, it will improve over time.
The new coloured grass etc is cool as well, nice on the eyes, makes the whole game feel new and refreshing.
I give it an 8. Would be a 10 but I'll save that for your next update :biggrin.gif:
It isn't truly polished in some areas but it just keeps adding some new stuff to experiment with and have some fun. Keep up the good work :biggrin.gif:
And I think some of you are a little too critical rating it so low. He does this mostly by himself while Infinity Ward's massive team can't even manage to make dedicated servers after taking millions of dollars from innocent souls (I hate everything CoD and everything about it and its developers if you haven't realized.)
I voted a 1. Knee-jerk, perhaps, but I'm absolutely hating what minecraft has become with this update.
I just watched a monster spawn *adjacent* to a lit torch at around 30 blocks below sea level. I mostly play SMP, because to me the awesome part about Minecraft is building stuff that other people will see. If I want to simply "survive", I'll follow a YouTube tutorial on surviving the first day and then never, ever make anything else ever, because once you had a little safe hidey-hole with a single torch in it, you can survive indefinitely. So if mere survival is the point of the game, then it has fallen flat.
On the server I'm on, I've had to completely paper over all of my creations with torches just so that creepers stop spawning and blowing them all up. It feels like now there's no room for creativity due to the sheer volume of monsters. I feel like it's just a waste of my time, now, to build anything. Thank the heavens that damage doesn't work yet in SMP, or I'd also be dead a dozen times over.
I don't want to go to creative mode, because I like having the limitation of gathering and crafting materials, instead of just having an infinite pool. I also like the idea of some danger, some risk, some need to deal with monsters, but this update has just gotten silly. It makes me want to not play minecraft anymore.
Awesome new stuff to the game. Better than I expected. :biggrin.gif: Still some bugs to work out but it's new so I won't subtract for that reason. 10/10

The new Glowstone lets me use my torches for other things. Plus, the Nether is awesome...minus the being raped by pigmen part.

1.all my mods gone
2.lag than before, even freeze sometimes (never experienced before!)
3.you lost everything you die
4.mobs everywhere at anyytime!
Nice work, Notch.
The biomes are perfect for snow and cacti.
The portal was AMAZING.
The Nether was scarier than any horror movie. You never know where the loud scream is coming from.
The jack-o-lanterns are the new fashion.
The ghasts? HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE
The pigmen? Reminds me of cannibal tribes.
