What the hell, Notch? You took away the beauty of the greenery.
I just took a look at the terrain.png, and it looks like trees and grass are both greyed out, so the color is assigned by something else. The way it's showing up in game is with the horrible, acrid looking green, which totally ****s up the way all my explored land looks. ****.
This is really, really crappy news for me :sad.gif:

In the beginning, Notch created the Nether and the Earth, and in it he made a man of sand and called him Steve. Notch made Steve strong so that he may punch wood, and lo, Steve was to have dominion over all square things.
The texture is now gray, and is given color by some other means, so a texture pack isn't going to work.
We're stuck with this baby-**** green landscape.
Notch seriously needs an art designer. This is not going to work.

Weren't you the one who was whining about lanterns and torches?
Lol, yeah. I was sort of kidding, though. I don't care all that much.
This grass devilry, however, is a serious ****ing bummer.

The general grass color looks like ****. I'm not noticing all that much of a problem with the sides, or a mismatch between the tops and the sides, but the overall color of them. It's an un-natural, blue-ish green, where as before it was this euphoric Super Mario lime green, which gave the game, and all my territories and creations, this unbelievably beautiful look. Now it's gone. This acrid, flat green makes me sort of not want to build or explore. Everything looks like ****. I'm really, really ****ing bummed out right now.

In the post right above you it was pointed out you can change the colors. So, change them rather than continuing to complain. Simple fix.

The grass and tree textures actually have a gradient depending on the climate now. I've done some hardcore exploring and found that there are areas that have an olive-green tint close to deserts, and others that are more bluish green can be found near snow biomes. The original, more familiar grass texture is sort of an interstitial texture - somewhere between generic grassland and rainforest (which has an even more vibrant green). So if you don't like the new colours, go exploring for new biomes.
Except for the sides not changing color (somehow i doubt he will fix this) i think the new colors look pretty good, i just wish there was a greater color variation between biomes.
it's all personal preference. I LOVE the way the new grass looks. It's lush and dark green in some places while pale and dried in others. Will look better when the sides match too.
We may also get the ability to paint blocks in the future. If the grass is now just a flat gray texture then has the green overlaid then other blocks might be able to adopt this as well... White wash your castle, paint your wooden house red.

I hated this thread at first, but your idea made me like it. Overlays would add a lot of customization to the game beyond what can be achieved via changing the textures. Granted, I don't think we'll see something like that any time soon with all the other fixes/features Notch has planned.
And as Domino said, I can't wait for the new Painterly Pack and see how the gradient was utilized for the different biomes.
The current one is a little bleh but OK. I really don't like the super-saturated medium green (the original was merely a fairly saturated light green) though. I concur with "can hardly wait for the painterly pack"! *cracks whip at Kas* :wink.gif:

What use is an ear that does not hear, or a mouth that does not speak?
I actually like the new greenery.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the euphoric theme it had going on, but I prefer this style.
Then again I always played with painterly on, I hate the standard wood/cobblestone.
But yeah, I don't like the "baby barf" grass. It's almost radioactive and I don't appreciate too much making it the default grass. If he doesn't want to change it I won't complain, though. I just think that there should be a bigger grass variation. Maybe a "hardened dirt" light brown block with a bit of weeds instead of beach sand for deserts would be nice. Maybe switching regular grass and Kryptonian grass with eachother; ie: baby barf appears where the old regular grass does now.
It is possible to implement a gradient of color variation without totally changing the look of our already explored worlds to this dark, acrid, unnatural plastic looking green. The color variation could actually be quite beautiful, but I think the way he went about attempting this may have ****ed it all up. The grass texture is now a dark gray, and apparently is assigned a shade of color by the grass gradient. The dark gray of the grass texture seems to be making all the grass come in six shades darker than it should, which gives me the impression that Notch has virtually no idea what he's doing with the art direction. The reason the bright, euphoria Super Mario green worked so well before was because it acted as a highlight to the top of the blocks while the dirt sides acted as a shade. This gave landscapes form and depth. Now that it's all darkened out, there is no depth, no texture, no form. It all just looks sort of flat to the naked eye. The shapes of the landscapes are now more difficult to grasp initially, where as before it could be seen and felt quite plainly, which made exploration, and marveling at one's own work quite pleasurable. And beyond the issues of depth and darkness totally ****ing up our already explored worlds and creations, the colors chosen for the grass are all this horrible, unnatural, plastic Army Men gradient of green. Before it looked bright and lush and real, now it looks hideously artificial.

And i would like to see you do a better job at making a game.
Thanks, voicelessbard for the great avatar and sig! (search him in the MC forums)

Also, have lanterns even been added yet?
< My Steam Account (add me!)
< Dragon Cave! (aid)
I just did em to use temporarily so I can play a bit with semi-decent colours.
I'm gonna make even better ones eventually.
