Oh look, an unfinished game with singleplayer and multiplayer!
Yes, work on the MULTIPLAYER before the SINGLEPLAYER! How perfectly logical!
PS: Minecraft is meant to be a survival game, going either way, unlike TF2 or Counter-strike, which are meant to be only multiplayer.
....what? You think not fixing multiplayer is logical? How is it more logical to focus on content patches than fix the numerous things preventing multiplayer from becoming even close to the state that singleplayer is in. Singleplayer is perfectly playable. Multiplayer isn't. Logic fail.

Hey, guys.
Beta = released to the public.
Minecraft Alpha is Beta.
And don't turn this statement into an argument, please.

Once you stop riding him he can try to blow you again.
Single player IS the priority. Many more people play single than multiplayer.
That's not surprising though as there's no point to MP except building.
Right, that's some pretty circular logic. Maybe more people would play MP if it worked like SP, instead of like a crippled facsimile of the Survival game they love.
not at all, most people BUY the game for SMP, i did, most people who buy this game DO come from MP background, such as vavle games, and mods such as tf2,css ect. i also think Mp inst even CLOSE to done, whats a MP without damage. and it a big let down because most if not all MP players were expecting damage. Although i am disappointed i will always love MC
I'm not at all denying the importance of multiplayer. I'm just annoyed at that guy's ignorance.
Wow, what a disappointment. It's really really really stupid to implement singleplayer features while the multiplayer mode is not even close to playable. Notch has A LOT to learn about game development
he's the only developer, name me one game as good as minecraft you've developed on your own T_T

So could we be rolling around in an update by now if he'd have just avoided updating multiplayer? I'm just suggesting that instead of rather pettily (Not in an offensive way by any means) trying to appease the multiplayer users with an update, he could've released an earlier update for purely singleplayer means.
After all, it is the priority.
thats the thing, he hasnt done much to MP yet, so what earlier would be idk, i guess we can wait and see

Nice strawman argument there!
Nobody's paid me thousands of euros for this phantom game either. Also didn't state there was going to be a ream of fixes for this phantom game and then not deliver them. If I had delivered this same level of work on time at my job - you know, what people pay me to do - I'd be in for a talk with my supervisor. Disappointment is justified.

why? me and a group of friend bought it to play together, there are TONS of SMP servers, i mean if its souly SP then why the **** release MP in the first place, why give people MP when there is no point, people are obviously going to expect something out of Mp if its release, id rather have the MP not released in the first place then have it released and its importance level fall.
Also, from the point of view of a server administrator, this new update will put a lot of unneeded stress on servers and their staff/owners. Many of us are restarting maps purely because of the update and hopefully wont need to do so again. But the amount of expectation that'll occur when people enter the server is going to be dwarfed by the loss of players due to (At no fault of Notch's self) the lack-of health. I simply feel that by adding Hell Notch has left many connotations that he's left 'till the day to clear. Multiplayer servers are going to get a serious hit from this.
We decided to halt our planned server reset earlier today, not really any point to start anew until player damage is in and duping is fixed.
My group of friends and I were looking forward to this server restart pretty hardcore, for hell/biomes/SMP Damage.
Right now, we're just going to not even bring up the server until SMP works because it defeats the purpose - we'd just have to do a restart when damage is fixed anyways.

The World of Arleah. 2004-2006 and then I worked as a Community Representative for Obsidian from 2006 to 2007 for the post release chaos of Neverwinter Nights 2.
I was the sole developer for a Neverwinter Nights Persistent World (Mini MMO) where I personally rewrote every single script Bioware wrote to support the multiplayer features that our community demanded of us.
I understand exactly what notch is going through, I have pulled all nighters until the code gods struck me with divine inspiration. I have put up a huge update only to discover that something is horribly horribly broken and had to fix something as huge as players and monsters not taking damage after I implemented a custom XP script within hours because I had a community of thousands of players screaming at me in disappointment.
That does not mean that I can not be disappointed by this update.
The issue I have is that SMP was labeled as "Top development priority", which it clearly is more like last.
The course Notch has taken with what he chooses to develop is confusing. He's said he wants to merge singleplayer with multiplayer. I agree and I think that singleplayer should just be a listen server. The longer he waits to do this, the more difficult it becomes to merge and the harder it is to implement content.
Similarly, adding more and more content instead of fixing existing bugs just isn't a good way to do things.
I know so many people who are waiting to buy this game the second I give them the word that SMP is working. No doubt other people are in the same situation and that fixing SMP will probably bring in more new purchases than any other feature (not to mention please a massive amount of current purchasers).
It really isn't actually that important to me. I don't know why, but hell will keep us all occupied for long enough...
However I am sure having an active modding community is important to you. Most of the innovations from a modding community come from the needs of the Multiplayer community.
If you want high res texture packs, unique recipes, world generators, save managers, custom combat/magic systems and all the other amazing things that a modding community can add to your single player experience... then you WILL be affected in a positive way by an active Multiplayer community.

Again, I'm not questioning the importance of multiplayer. What I'm questioning is the idea that fixing everything in multiplayer should come before any new additions to the game.
The sane thing to do, and what most developers do in fact, is set a feature set checkpoint for the client, reach it, and only then you make it all work on multiplayer. That way you don't bounce back and forth between different types of problems and parts of the game logic, you are more focused and, therefore, more productive and less prone to errors. If you don't do this, you eventually end up dealing with the same issue multiple times. Say for instance that Notch has already some plans to completely rewrite redstone or minecarts. If he makes them work on multiplayer before he rewrote them in single player, he'd have to deal with the server-side issues TWICE.
Improving the client should always come first. It's surprisingly that the game even has multiplayer at this stage, to be honest. But most people here have no experience developing anything to understand that.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying single player should get EVERYTHING before multiplayer begins. I'm saying Notch clearly has his SSP checkpoints set before he starts focusing on SMP.
But like Ascadia said, knowing the pains of being a developer doesn't mean you can't be disappointed. But at least we understand it more.
Stop whining, kids.

Why would he add something like hell? A thing nobody has asked for, but complected ignore Multiplayer?
Not really, but seriously.
