I don't think creating four elemental planes to travel to is really going to work with Minecraft, it seems a bit too complex, although it would be a neat idea.
Anyway, why would having four different "dimensions" to warp to make things complicated? The game itself is already complicated in the sense that not everything is imediately obvious, nor do most people figure everything out even after long hours of play, (I assume).
What would be cool though is if this idea does somehow end up in the game, that the dimensions added match the updates. . . . .Winter Update - Water Dimension. . . . .Sping Update - Earth Dimension. . . . .Summer Update - Air Dimesion. . . . .or something like that.

For the fifth slip world you will need to kiss Leeloo while standing in the obsidian gate.
And the sixth slip would require the other 5 slips to be close together and combine their powers. Hippies would come out.
So, I'm thinking...
Fire: Fast travel. Lava and fire, of course.
Water: Random travel. Cavern / abyss thing with watery sky, but not really "underwater". It would have a much deeper sea / ocean, though.
Air: inter-world travel. Foggy, floating islands. Maybe bridges.
Earth: "Safe" travel (filled with mobs that act like the zombie pigmen, neutral until you provoke. Maybe have the Zelda chickens, too.) Biocave with crystals and odd formations.
For the fifth slip world you will need to kiss Leeloo while standing in the obsidian gate.
There is no kissing in Minecraft. Only hugging.
A fifth elemental world would certainly fit with the "Wheel of Time" inspiration for fast travel dimensions, though. If I remember correctly, the "channelers" in that series work various magic-like effects with five elements, four of which correspond to the classical elements, with the fifth being called "spirit," I think.
But to avoid copying those books too directly, the fifth element could be called something else. Like maybe "heart."
you know this got me thinking. with that post about the definition of elemental. its almost like gestalt right? whole to the part.
So what if, there were not 4 elements, but 6. not exactly sure what the 5th and 6th ones would be, but for now ill just say the 6 would be earth, water, fire, air, energy, life. these 6 elements would have their own portal going to their own dimension, having similarities like same monster, different elemental power etc. have their own danger, reward, etc.
BUT the thing thats most related to the element factor (alone they are seperate, but together they unite) what if you made a gate but instead of placing two of the element, you fill the 6 spots with each of the 6 elements, since the space of the portal is 2x3 space WxH, there are six open spot, which u fill in with one of each element, creating a elemental/unity slip. Inside would be elemental monsters that use all the abilities of the 6 elements in the best form possible.
for instance, a ghast in the elemental slip would have the ablilties of a fire/water/earth/air/energy/life ghast, and use their abilities depending on the situation. and in the elemental slip would be elemental guardians, protecting a secret (yay secrets!) and preventing you from uncovering it. they could be like colossus sized and use all of the elemental abilities. That would give you something to work towards, as well as make you all giddy with excitement

Keep It Simple...
I don't think creating four elemental planes to travel to is really going to work with Minecraft, it seems a bit too complex, although it would be a neat idea.
The biggest complexity would be to design the actual dimensions themselves. Portals are already functional, they'd just need the stuff mentioned to differentiate the portal activations; that looks pretty easy. Mechanics-wise it's like moving from game-level to game-level in a map-based FPS, except you can get back and forth instead of it being a linear progression. All the dimensions would be separate maps, just like the Slip. The biggest negative I see would be hard drive space to store any extra maps you'd be creating, but it's nearly 2011, HDD space measured even in hundreds of megs is pretty trivial.
This thread, combined with the 3 Little Pigmen story thread, have restored some of my brainpower that was bled off today. Thank you!

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.

Hmm maybe diamond blocks for the water slip as they are almost the same color and hard to get. Especially since you have to get 9 of them to make a block.
Earth block could be gold
Air block not sure yet lol.

If you ever drop your keys into a pool of lava, forget about them, cuz man, they're gone...
Fire: two lava source blocks
Water: two water source blocks
Earth: two obsidian blocks
Air: two diamond blocks
Yeah I like a lot of challenge, I use enough mods to warrent it, lolz.

The problem with using diamond blocks for the air slip means that it would be the hardest one to reach, as you would need 18 diamond, and not to many people find that much before using the rest. So far everything needed to actually get to a slip is rather simple, and doesn't actually require any diamonds.
If you were to make the air or water slip require two diamonds, then you better have some damn good ways to make it worth that much diamond, not to mention, if you want to build another gate in those slips to get out and fast travel like in the fire slip right now, then you need an additional 18 diamonds.
So far, i don't think using diamond for either of them is a good idea.

You could prefix any word with one of the 4 elements. It could be called The Realm, or The Core, or for that matter, Hell.
Ah, but Armitige, the other words you mention lack the connotation of movement we get with "slip" - and not just any movement. Slipping can be quick, and often tricky or dangerous, just like fast travel with portals will be.
To my ear, those other examples also lack the proper sound qualities for a truly catchy word. "Realm" may be only a one-syllable word, but it is a slow and ponderous syllable. "Core" and "hell" are not quite so ponderous as "realm," but both still lack the feeling of quick and nimble movement that comes from the plosive-stop consonant at the end of "slip." (In case you're wondering, "plosive" is an actual word, not a typo: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/plosive)
That is why I called it perfect for this suggestion. It's not the only possible word, but it has multiple strengths for this chosen purpose.
Translation: The "Slip" is a great name because the realm is all like full of fire.

In the beginning, Notch created the Nether and the Earth, and in it he made a man of sand and called him Steve. Notch made Steve strong so that he may punch wood, and lo, Steve was to have dominion over all square things.
