What you think the best defense against ghasts will be if you are trying to colonize hell?
I think that maybe it would be to turn the game to peaceful mode, but maybe there is a better option?
Peaceful mode doesn't work in hell, notch said so in his twitter and I believe in his blog, but arrows will work, warning though, they are immune to fire, but can be hurt by snowballs, which notch said on his twitter
What if you want peaceful, but then you stuck with only torches cause you had to go to hell to get lanterns so you have to go around always relight your torches or face ghasts! Makes no sense to call it peaceful anymore :sad.gif:

Troll, or over exaggerating Notch's words.
Peaceful WILL work in hell, only if your were on peaceful before. Any monster that spawns will stay there if you turn it on peaceful.
He replied to someone's message to him saying that: "Yes, snowballs are a good idea."
Looking at the flight characteristics of the ghast in the new video I'd say the best way to defend against them would be a cargo net of obsidian that reaches between 30-40 blocks high. Just wide enough so the dimensions of the ghast couldn't slip through the mesh.
An additional tactic would be to wire the outside of the net with tnt so if you can trap one in a chamber you either hit it with a blast via redwire or open up water in a 6x6 grid above it.

Never confirmed though.
I'm doing Neither, you just cant deal with peaceful not working in hell, which has been confirmed via twitter

thank you, sometimes I wonder if anyone else can actually critical interpret anything on that twitter without making stuff up. I was about to quote this myself.
What i'd think what would be the best [Fastest, Easiest, most simple] Tactic in which to protect yourself from ghasts, would be obsidian walls.
But I'm uncertain if ghasts will be able to break through particular blocks, like what tnt can and cannot destroy, or if they are practically invincible in which to the point where your only defense is to go on the offense.
It has been stated that ghasts can break through blocks, there aren't any specifics as to how, I have noticed in the most recent video that of course their fireballs do explode and break certain blocks upon impact with anything, but then again they may be able to destroy simply by running into it.
One of these new mobs will be called "Ghast", and it will be VERY unfair. Ghasts are floating jellyfish-like creatures, 4x4x4 blocks large, inhabiting the Hell dimension. They can break blocks and throw fireballs at you which set the landscape on fire. Ghasts won't attack unless they can see you.
So taking into account everything that's been stated, the most simple way to defend yourself against a ghast.......... Is run.... [If you're 95% Of the population who wish to take that answer]...
Seriously though, as for a defensive method, I doubt there is one, so you must either take the offensive, or take cowardice.
Offensive being: Stocking up [Preferably a double chest or more] Full of arrows, along with a bow, You shall need these, seeing as how for the most part, ghasts will often be very... very far away, yet shoot you with exploding fireballs....

I actually believe the safest way, as stated in the quote above, would just be to hide yourself from their sight.
They can't attack what they can't see.
So any kind of wall would do, and maybe even a building or a house, and hell may be inhabitable.
But the thing is, is. We aren't 100% sure as to what that monster is capable of, so we can only assume, Man I hope that fireballs are their only way of destroying, and that they can't see through windows..... o_o
The best defence would be to wait for the update, experiment wit how exacvtly they attack (and destroy blocks?), an then think of something.
Someone gave the idea of an obsidian cargo net, but this can't be done SAFELY without hacking and will most likely be huge overkill. Besides, who says they won't just shoot you through the holes...
If you really want to be 100% absolutely safe from day 1 when you enter the slip, then just dig a hole as soon as you leave the portal. Make it big, then put blocks around the portal. Then you can work in the safety of your slip-cave.
your right, shooting through holes is easy, dealing with a baby is hard :3
To defend against ghasts, you really only have a few options.
1. Peaceful mode
2. Dig caves
3. Obsidian, and lots of it.
4. When spotted by a ghasts, fire arrows.
If you hit the thing it shoots at you with your sword or an arrow, it will fly back at the ghast!
Get it? Good.

Discount Cigarettes Box is able to build on its high position because of its minded focus on value creation for the cheap cigarettes online smokers through fresh product design.
Once I found that they can't blow up cobblestone, they've given me little trouble. I just set up a lattice-work of cobblestone around my gate, and a small cobblestone shelter nearby, and I'm completely protected from them. The pigmen on the other hand, I accidentally punched one while harvesting some glowstone. Needless to say I died immediately. I wasn't expecting them to hold a grudge either, so I died again when I came back to retrieve my things ><.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Cobblestone is completely ghast-proof, at the very very worse it will briefly catch fire, but they cannot break it. for cover I build:

and they work fine, so long as you're not in a cross-fire. Ghast fireballs are slow and always aimed at head-height so easy to avoid even in the open. I have also cobblestoned the ground around my portals, there is nothing more annoying than stepping into a burning block while avoiding a ghast fireball.
Obsidian buildings = complete waste of effort.
It's also a good idea to block the portal's special blocks from getting turned off by a Ghast gunpowder ball (I just put cobble barriers on the front/back of my portal to avoid the fireballs from hitting it anywhere but straight on, no angled shots can hit).
Cuz it's even more frustrating when your portal gets turned off and you have no flint for whatever reason. (dying often to random stuff you messed around with, lol) If you die with your portal de-active, then try to port back, it'll create a new portal.. which is annoying to have around.
