You can randomly get snow levels right now in single player.

On singleplayer you use a shovel to collect snow off the ground. On multiplayer, it's bugged so that doesn't work, you have to use a mod to get it to work, or use Runecraft to create a Snow Shovel.
Notch even started they were pretty unfair (overpowered), and a bow is pretty much the only way to stand a chance.
I said that in another thread, and someone replied they were going to beat one with no armour or weapons or food just to prove me wrong.
This will make for entertaining video clips either way it turns out.
OT: I like the concept of a creature that you're not really intended to have good chances against. It adds depth to the game, since you're gonna need a plan to even just not die (RUN is one of these good plans - also HIDE), let alone take one down. Or more than one. That is called fun. It's boring to have enemies that you KNOW you can easily defeat every time.

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.

They shoot slow projectiles that don't follow your movements at all.
They're not exactly 'shitimscrewed' like a skeleton riding a spider when you have no bow, more like 'I ain't going anywhere near that thing, and I'm just going to avoid it..'
Even with a bow I think it'll still be quite an unfair fight. Arrows dont shoot that far, especially when you shoot upwards. You would need to be on high ground to kill one of those things. For example in the indiegames.com video, the guy made a bad mistake by going very low. Theres no way he would be able to shoot it with arrows. This ghast will be a good enemy; you will actually need tactics to kill it.
Not to mention, judging from their size, they probably require a bunch of damage to kill. GHAST KILLING PARTIES, HO!

Nature should really stop catering to all these furries! I mean, do we REALLY need two kinds of elephant? Puh-leaze.
The ghasts from the videos didn't seem like they were going to be a huge problem as I originally thought. Their fireballs are relatively inaccurate, you can run away easily, and they only did a small amount of damage to the environment.
I'll probably just goto hell with some building materials and build a small fort to collect the new blocks. Ghasts probably won't "see" you through walls so as long as your hidden in something they won't destroy it.

Yeah, but if they start throwing the fire when they first see you, they could still hit the shelter. And, if they know you are in their (like mobs waiting outside your house) they may just bombard the place.

Also, this is the second time today I've seen someone posting on an internets forum which is about a video game, calling someone a nerd. That honestly boggles my mind. Loudguy, there are entire countries' worth of people who will call anyone who even owns a computer a nerd. Sillies.

Plus, the ground itself there is flammable, not to mention the mass amounts of lava and uneven terrain, and by the magazine-guy testrun, it's apparently really dark when you're not actually close to the pools of molten rock. It's gonna be no walk in the park just due to terrain, let alone a flying monster or three burning and exploding the ground while you try to not fall off a cliff into a lava lake. Near-misses are still going to be bad, say if it asplodes the little bridge you're using to get across a chasm. Actually, that sounds really fun! Though this is probably not helping to reassure OP of his safety. >______>

As seen in the videos Ghasts aren't as bad as people made them out to be (including Notch). If they don't change between now and the update then I have to say that they are a minor threat if you are moderately careful. Their fireballs are slow and easy to dodge and they don't chase you very hard.
The greatest strength is that they can fly and are usually very high up in the air making them hard to kill. I'm sure that if you find one close enough you can easily kill one with your machine gun arrows. There might even be new weapons to fight them with.
Does anybody here realize that the real danger of ghasts is that they will destroy every feeble attempt to make a rail system in hell, unless you wrap your track with obsidian. And then you run into the problem of the zombie pigmen, who are harmless when undisturbed, but if you find one on a rail track, what do you do? Thats right, there is very little you can do.
The horror of Notch's hell is this...you have to run. There is no safe route, no secret undisturbed path. You enter hell, figure out which direction your second portal is in, and then run for your life.
