Ghasts are really creepy in their indifference. When (if) they see you, they just continue to fly slowly, shooting fireballs, but look like they don't give a damn about you actually.
1. The diamond pick thing was probably just retarded excitement. What? It happens.
Looks like the testers were prequipped with only three items: a stack of obsidian, a flint&steel, and a diamond pickaxe. So the diamond pickax was the only tool he HAD, and the alternative would be to go back to the regular world, punch down a tree, make a craft station, make some sticks, and then make a wooden shovel. Then return.
How many of us would NOT try the diamond pickaxe on every substance, in that circumstance? It's the only actual choice short of using your hands. And it's not like there is a reason to conserve the tool, on a throwaway test/preview character.

Actually the alternative would be to switch to bare hands. I do that as a habit to save pickaxe durability. I don't know why everyone is raging so hard over this, like you said it's a test run.
Just so you know, in the PC Gamer video, the guy only used the pickaxe to mine the first block of "facedirt" than he switched to his obsidian to dig the rest one he realized it was in fact some sort of dirt. Which is a fair assumption when encountering new blocks. No need to bash the guy about it.

No mention of Fishing, Watches or Pumpkins in either of the preview articles. And the thing comes out tomorrow. Methinks several of the bullet points may end up being left out.
After watching all videos posted here(PC gamer & Indie games videos), I've come across a couple of questions:
1. Fighting VS Ghast
- It obviously ridicilous to fight Ghast on higher ground with sword, when he can just blow you or rocks around you, which will result in falling down. So, basically, swords can't help here.
- Using bow and arrows against Ghast is something that intriges me. From the videos posted here, I can see that Ghast is floating in air around 30-35 blocks higher than player. Arrows can only fly 25-30 blocks in air(when shooting strictly vertical), if I'm not mistaken (correct me if I'm wrong). So, basically, we need to shoot him from upper levels, then run a little, then again shoot etc. This will be pain in the ass, even more if there are 2+ Ghast's around.
2. New blocks
- I see that red moss cobblestone(or whatever community call it) will be used for that infinitive fire that's mentioned in other thread these days.
But what are those 2 blocks? Silver-golden block and that grey block? Any ideas?

The gray block slows down your movement speed. You can see if PC Gamer's second video he walks on it and his running speed slows down. And when he sets fire to the block it goes out.
And I don't think you're supposed to fight the Ghast. This hell/slip/whatever is supposed to be used for transportation mostly. With that said I plan on bringing a ton of water, a bunch of food, and a ton of arrows to take down a Ghast. I hope they drop something

Yeah, I saw that, but I was wondering if those blocks will have some purpose. To be honest, that sound when guy used pickaxe on silver-golden block reminds of glass, and I don't think that new blocks like that were mentioned.
As for the gray block, dunno, but it reminds me of some sort of sand.

Well, it was mentioned that Ghast is going to drop something, so it supposed for us to kill him, but not easily. I just think that it will be difficult, mostly because of arrows flying distance.
And by the way, I didn't catch up with everything, sooo, can Ghast go through walls etc.?
I don't think they can but I don't know for sure. All I know is they fly and they shoot exploding fireballs that destroy blocks.
And I don't think anyone knows anything about the uses of the new block types. I'm guessing the gray one is only using for slowing down movement speed. Maybe in the future you'll be able to put it in a furnace to get a slime that slows down movement speed. This would be useful for the future if Notch adds games for multiplayer. It would be sweet playing capture the flag or something and getting killed because the enemy's flag is surrounded by the slow stuff and you get ambushed.
I have my hell/slip portal all set up in my house and I have a furnace with coal loaded up so I can try to discover new things. The first thing I want to try to melt down is that gold stuff that breaks with the sound of glass.
The PC Gamer guy playing minecraft SUCKS!!

I want to know what is under the serf.....and what is new in the main...

This is a demo from Notch.
HE MADE IT SO they start with 64 Obsidian, a diamond pick and flint/steel.
Derp. Or else the reviewers would have to screw around alot to get to the content they want to show off.
That would be sad.

Man, I'm looking forward to this update.
What if we are supposed to mostly run from them? Minecraft is not a FPS, after all.
