I like this. I also hope that notch makes it so that the deeper you go, the hotter it gets. This whole temperature thing, plus hopefully hunger and sleep will make minecraft an incredibly deep survival experience.
I would love to see more realism added to the game in terms of making the environment more deadly.

plenty more mobs, migration, camps, caves, niches etc
Shields for players and some mobs
holdable torches (light those around you)
