From Twitter, it seems Notch intends to eventually implement a way for the player to freeze to death:
Prusselusken @notch Oh, and on behalf of Facepunch I ask you; are we ever getting temperatures as in e.g. freezing to death on tundras?
Notch @Prusselusken Not in this update, but later on yes.

Well this is just me but... Water moats are so wet and dirty and annoying.... Real men make moats of liquid hellfire forged in the bowels of the earth and torn from the teat of the unholy adminium. Real MANLY Men create a LAVAFALL of death.
I just hope we can get Hyperthermia as well.
(It's the opposite of Hypothermia.)
It's called "OH GOD I'M ON FIRE".
speaking of which, random spontaenous combustion in hell, anyone ?

I fist pumped when I saw this on his twitter. Fantastic idea.
I wonder if this cold damage would only apply if it were snowing, though?
Perhaps if you you're in the light of a torch, flame or lava, the cold damage is negated.
Perhaps I'll suggest it to him on twitter for when it's implemented.
New inventory slot to make a leather cloak, perhaps?
i do think this is a good idea but create problems with armor vs insulation. Armor is not very insulating but wool or leather provide comparatively less defense then iron or diamond. It should be logical to allow us to strap insulation to our armor to provide both protection and insulation. We should not have to choose between protection and insulation. So insulated armor should behave like a iron block, being fully reversible between a iron ingot and a iron block.

I would presume wool armour for cold resistance?
That was my immediate thought as well.
I'd have believed it to be the other way.
Both clouds and snow acts as an insulator which makes it warmer when it snows and colder when you have clear nights.
A pork coat?
Yay I have internets now! If you've ever felt like I deserved one before I had it just make it up by clickin' it now! ;p

Back in my day, sheep dropped brown mushrooms, and by golly we... Hated it, pretty much.
Cheerful!

Tat would be such a fun game mechanic, if you just casually exploded into flames at random while playing and then died and lost all of your stuff!

I make the Artifact mod.
I'd buy notch a beer if he did that.
