The leaf type between biomes is on a block by block basis, and not per tree. We might have some funny crossbreeds going on between seasonal and pine forests (once they are added), but in this scene it looks nice. It will also be interesting to see how planted trees grow in biomes that do not generally have trees. Biomes are going to make terraforming more difficult, but exploration will definitely be more fun.
I'm hoping that biomes are not as frequent as this picture makes them appear though. I wouldn't want to walk for 5 minutes in any direction and cross every biome in the game. It would be nice to feel fully immersed in an individual biome, so that you would be able to look in every direction and really feel like you are in a desert or an ocean. If there are too many transitions, biomes will get boring and repetitive quickly, since you will constantly be seeing all of them, and it will make the world feel less epic.

One thing that worries me a little is that the desert (presumably a hot one) seems too close to the taiga.
I wasn't expecting to see three biomes within eyeshot. I thought they'd be bigger than that.
Could just be how it is in Notch's test map.
I would like to see biomes a few days walk apart to encourage us to explore vast distances and create huge minecart networks if we want to travel between them in reasonable time.
He said there are 6 new blocks, we currently know of 4-5 now. He said one of the blocks is useless. Of what if... the darker leaves may make apples instead of sap?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
One day, there will be someone who looks at my signature and wonders "who gives a damn?"
I don't think so. If you look closely at the screenshot, some of the tree trunks look different too, and I have a feeling they all use the same block id to prevent block type inflation. Also, Notch said preexisting terrain from old maps would have the new biome grass/tree colors, which would not be possible if they were different blocks. It would make sense for the new 'useless' block to be something to give biomes more variety though.
I would imagine that the closeness of the biomes was deliberate in order show off the different ones without having to post a bunch of pictures. its much easier to see the difference here than if he were to just show us 3 seperate pictures, one thats a desert, one that has a lot of trees, and one that's icy.
I'm hoping that the forests will have taller trees. give it a less cramped feel than what a bunch of adjacent trees are like right now.
I think Notch chose this picture specifically to show us the transitions between biomes. I think that the biomes are actually bigger than the picture shows.
Not really, these are pictures OF the new Biomes, your thread is what biomes there are, just because you made a biomes thread doesn't mean no one else can make a biomes thread.
EDIT: He also posted the pictures waaaaaay before you too...

don't get worried. It's still being tested.
@vincent
Very legit points there. It seems the contrast of the blocks are what changes now that you think about it.

Yes!!! THIS is what should be important: ICE Block!!! Biomes be damned :smile.gif:
I wonder if Notch got the physics down for sliding on ice... If there's Fire in Hell, there'd better be Ice :smile.gif:
/me goes to clear land to make an Ice Castle... lalala
Dude, Ice blocks have been arounf for awhile, ever spawn in a snow world?
My thread had the info before that thread by HOURS. All they had at the time was the names of the biomes (Wrong names too, at the time).
If it's like the ice in the snow worlds, the answer is yes :smile.gif:.
Well, I had to try several times to get one, so they're not common enough that everybody will encounter one.
Looking good!
Can't what till the update
