i wonder though how the math works on that. if you create a portal it will, most likely, use that 16x16x16 chunk. now, does it spread out from that point in 16x16x16 chunks? what if someone goes 19 blocks away and builds a portal? do the zones overlap?
so if 2 portals have overlapping zones, they will go to the same portal in hell? what happens if they have 1 space between their effective zones and someone builds a portal in that area. which portal in hell would it use since it's effectively in 2 different portal overlaps.
This is going to be I imagine some of the first new Minecraft science to be done after the update. There will be answers come November 2 at the latest, I predict!

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.
Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that there is no such thing as playing Minecraft normally.
who wants to bet that portals will crash mp servers? just like minecarts do. lol. it would be fitting.
Probably
I'm half tempted to make multiple portals in close proximity... Either to break something or make quicker ghast production :wink.gif: (if it works that way)
Actually, technically that would map to an area of 0.25x0.0625 in the hell world. A 4x1 portal in the hell world would be 64x16 in the normal world, eheh...
I think the portal's "location" for the purpose of determining the exit point will be based on one specific block, either in the corner or one of the middle blocks.
What I was thinking and hoping for is that building multiple portals in the same chunk (like one at ground level and one halfway to adminium) would link to the same portal. Entering the double-linked portal would take you to one of the two portals in the same chunk as each other, randomly chosen.
As for intersecting portals... expect a lot of "I accidentally everything in a 93-chunk radius. How do I fixed?" threads.

My guess would be that if a portal is build up top, notch's code checks if there is a portal within 16 blocks in hell, not if there is one on a corresponding chunk. Chunks are just a method of breaking up a large mesh into smaller ones, which can be loaded and freed on fly, I doubt they are used for any determination.
128 blocks from sea level, as I recall, which is also 128 blocks to the adminium, ergo 256 blocks full height.
According to the wiki and my own memory (not necessarily in that order), the complete height, from the bottom layer of bedrock to the highest spot you can place a block, 128 blocks.
In my portal room I put exactly two portal butted up against each other... Lets see what happens. :wink.gif:
What do you think would happen?
A theory that I tend to agree with suggests that they'll just lead to the same hell world portal.
Also, I think a chunk is actually 32x32.
*googles*
Nope, it's 16x16x256.
it just links to the same hell portal.
Thats it.
nothing fancy.

That maps to an area of 16x64 in Hel.

...what will happen if you light the spot where they are both joined?
