Let's see... here are just some games that have adjustable difficulty:
Fallout 3
Dragon Age: Origins (which for anyone who played it prior to patches knows just how necessary adjustable difficulty was at times, just to get through a Normal run...)
Jade Empire
SW: KoTOR I and II
Mass Effect 1 and 2
And so on, so forth. Those are just some off the top of my head I remember. I'm sure there's plenty more. And MC is all about player choice anyway. I fail to see why this is an issue. It only affects single player, and Joe Smith's run isn't going to affect yours or mine in the slightest. It's not like 20 people in multiplayer will randomly switch difficulty at will or anything.
It annoys me to no end when these "I hate when people that have no effect on my game use feature -x- that I never use to begin with anyway" threads. I don't like wasting diamond picks on stone blocks, but a lot of people I've seen don't care and use them for every mining object. Should my dislike of that translate into Notch making diamond picks only work on Obsidian? Seriously, people.
Get a grip. Peaceful exists for a reason. Easy exists for a reason. Notch wants the game to be hard, yes. As an option. Not as the only way to go, all else be damned. For crying out loud, even Normal exists.
Why do people forget that? At some point, even creative is going to come along in "Survival" mode.
I'm all for reasonable player choice, especially in sandbox games like MC. That's what the heck it's all about.

If you want to just build, play it on creative.
Really, you want to bring that irrelevant point up? If I want to build, I'll play on Peaceful, Easy, Normal, or Hard. That's what the game's about. Yes, yes, enemies may or may not be there to annoy me. But what stops me from building on Hard, even on permanent?
Honestly, I think people are just seriously impatient for Adventure mode, where building won't happen and all you get to do is kill things with exceptionally terrible combat. If there were a roll eyes emoticon, I'd use it.
Did... you even read the whole thread?
Or even my whole post?
I'm not giving you a serious response if you are gonna misrepresent my stance because you didn't take the time to read.
I'm frankly tired of being asked to repeat myself because people are too lazy too read what I've already written.
While we're at it, lets just go back to the "lives" system of the old-school games eh? Challenging and fun!
Anyways,
I remember my last playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins. I'd been enjoying the game on hard, made it about halfway through and got myself into a fight I just couldn't seem to win, I tried several times, many methods, used player advice, tricks, tips, anything I could think of, but couldn't win. So what'd I do? I changed the difficulty, put it down to Normal for a few minutes, finally was able to advance, and moved on.
My wife? She plays it on easy, keeps it there, she looks at my frequent deaths, reloads, and pausing and strategizing and *knows* that wouldn't be enjoyable for her, she plays to relax. Same reason she can't play WoW, dying in the middle of nowhere with all that lost progress? Stresses her out, and she just wants to relax. Without an adjustable slider, sticking points can go from challenging, to frustrating, to just plain maddening.
There are days in Minecraft where I just want to finish my bloody greenhouse, then pop up the difficulty and see how hard it is to defend it from the outside, and see how crater-filled my front lawn can become.
And to quote the second part of Notch's statement, the part that most people ignore:
But if it's no fun, I'll redesign.
I do agree with the "lock for hardcore" feature though. You want a shiny stamp on your screen and nuked saves? All yours. But the rest of us will enjoy the sliders. I know what I enjoy, and while I'm fine with people who don't mind dying after spending 4-5 hours digging out a mine to find their diamonds and then getting pushed into lava and having it all go up in smoke, I do mind that sometimes. I can't play this game every day for hours on end to remake up progress, so don't take away my options please. Locking me on peaceful/easy/normal is telling me "you're not good enough to ever see half the features the game has without starting all over" as well as "if you ever get stuck or frustrated, you have to start over".
Fallout 3 made you take sides in many quests, and make decisions. But I could always save right beforehand. I could always fiddle with the slider, and Karma was a cinch to change.
I do have to agree that sometimes I think there's people out there who want these confining constraints imposed on other players simply to have that glorious YouTube video that shows that they've played on some sort of hardcore mode and survived, without leaving any options for changes.
Last thing:
For Mr. Winter, since he loves to quote game developers. Here's a BioWare developer on influence of "hardcore" gamers on development. (by Muzyka, during GameSpot interview)
We should note that a minority of hardcore gamers actually do seek niche-type features that might cause the mainstream gamers to get turned off by complexity or difficulty, and, to be successful in reaching a large audience with their titles, developers definitely need to be aware of this phenomenon and be careful to screen all comments carefully before changing their designs based on those comments from fans.

What's off this cliff? *bump* AAaaaaah, damn you sheep!
All of you idiots aren't getting the message here. Nobody cares about anyone else's game difficulty. The problem is that whenever you get into trouble (eg. caught on fire, cornered by a spider, rushed by creepers, etc) there is nothing stopping you from turning the game to peaceful and instantly solving every problem you can think of. Some of us don't want to be able to do this because frankly, it ruins the game.
Why not just refrain from switching it you say? That's simple. It becomes idiotic to not switch it if the option is available to you. You know it's taking the lame way out but at that moment in time, you simply don't want to lose all of your items and waste the time getting back to your position. It's just human nature. If there is an easier way of doing things, your gonna do them that way.
The option to restrict difficulties from being changed could be just that. Optional. There's no need for everyone to be forced to switch to just one mode permanently, but this thread is proof that some players would appreciate being able to. It'd be stupid to argue any further. It wouldn't affect you, it's just giving others the option. That way, each side get's what they want.
Jesus Christ! This post grew into an adult in no time!
I see now how the permanent difficulty idea is unfair to those whom wish to change it. I suppose I was just annoyed at how I always had the option of god mode with me, wherever I went.
I'm leaving this thread up to it's posters, seeing how much was posted in a mere few hours.
Also, my rienactment of a difficulty ***** wasn't out of much annoyance. Rather, to try and grasp the reader's attention. I mainly use lolspeak for dramatic effect.
This thread was pretty much fail anyway. Shouldn't have drank that monster with my buddies, earlier today.
Those have some dangerous effects. On people that just watched EBM. (Epic Beard Man). That type of stuff gets me pumped. Can't stand to see ignorance.
I didnt take the time to read all the posts here cause... well there is no point, why doesnt he give the option (like Fallout) but make it so you CANT get achievements if you switch the difficulty (or mod)? since he's going to add achievements this seems like a good solution. I only play on the difficulty i start on (usually hard(but that may change if this game actually gets hard in the future)).

Contradictory, much?
My main problem with restricting the difficulties is that it goes against my play style. If I'm undergoing a large building project, and I don't feel like getting harassed by mobs while I'm thinking about the best way to continue, I switch to peaceful. If I'm low on gunpowder and I want to do some blast mining, I switch to easy (more mobs spawn on easy). If neither are the case, I have it on normal or hard. This is how I get the most out of the game.

You misunderstand what I'm saying. What I'm trying to convey is something like this. You pick your difficulty and there is something (maybe a little checkbox or some form of button but whatever, doesn't really matter)
that allows you to switch it into permanent mode. After that you can't un-switch it. It's locked in. This means if you want to pick a difficulty and keep it permanent, you can. This also means if you wan't to be able to switch difficulties, you can. It's all a matter of clicking the box or not. So no, my post isn't contradictory.
I really don't know why this is till going. We have two main groups, those who support the idea and those who state it should be optional. I believe we all can, all bias aside, objectively see which is the better of the two. The difficulty settings should be expanded and refined, not limited.

Why does it matter how people play their single player games? It's a terrible idea, and the only way I could support it would be if it was an option upon world creation.
Spammer read the posts.
Also I think it would be great and I agree/Support this cause.
Oh, I'm a spammer now? Sure, I guess that makes sense.
However, just because you may not want it, doesn't mean others can't. Having the difficulty idea your way on a thread is selfish.
Sure, you may not want it, but remember that not everyone plays your way. Take into consideration, how your opinion affects others.
Maybe you should have applied the same logic to yourself when you started this topic.
Also, it isn't just me. I got the idea from reading others' posts about their playing style.
I didn't make it definite that I wanted permanent to be forced onto all players. That's why I took into consideration of others, and thought that a checkbox for a lock would be nice. Or a peaceful countdown.
why would you be tired of what other people do in their single player game? how does it affect you? if they eat toast in the morning and you have a gluten allergy does it affect you too? im just amazed at why people want to dictate the way other people choose or choose not to play their copy of the game.

Again, it's how it takes away the true meaning of "survival".
I could care less if you pick the warrior over the magician. I however am very anal about cheating. That's just the way I am. If you wish to cheat, use MC edit. Keep the game clean for those whom are serious about gameplay.
its not cheating... its the game.. it allows you to play the way you wish, just becuase you read something more into it you dont need to choose that others do as well, I dont cheat... never have, but I use peacful on a regular basis, if that offends your idea of how the game should be thats not my problem (no offense intended.) you keep your idea of the game and i'll keep mine.

This is a sandbox game. There is no wrong way to play a sandbox game. If people want to switch to peaceful when they are about to die, let them. It doesn't affect you at all.
