I just think that Notch shouldn't be making a decision based off of fear of religious uprising. And that "Hell" is a bad-ass word. And that people have been making up their own versions of "Hell" for various areligious purposes for centuries (Dante Alighieri: writing about Hell to declare love for a married woman, and thumbing his nose to the church, since 1308)--and that it's not terribly offensive anyway.
Besides. When I'm playing the game and I'm in another dimension filled with burning and death and lava and fire and unkillable demon-like monsters... I'm sorry, call it The Way or The Underworld or whatever, but we all know what it really is.
It's based more off the Ways than Hell though, it's direct inspiration came from an alternate travel dimension, not the Judeo-Christian concept of hell.
And I'm pretty sure I haven't seen any hells with flying jellyfish before...
hell has long since gone BEYOND the christian meaning of hell in fiction.
I'll still call it Hell no matter what Notch ends up calling it. It's a horrible place with lava and demons. If you don't call it Hell then you're being a hypersensitive douchebag.
Minecraft is predominately Medieval... lets called it Hades instead.
That...doesn't make any sense. If you are calling it Medieval, than "Hell" would still be appropriate. I'm not sure what your line of thought was.

Nature should really stop catering to all these furries! I mean, do we REALLY need two kinds of elephant? Puh-leaze.

I play D&D, I tend to associate it with Medieval... which got gods into my head, which prompted Hades.
Which is stupid, because the plane is called the Nine Hells, but...
The concept of Hell is in pretty much EVERY religion; to say "it's all those Christians who get offended!!1111!" is ignorant and shows a complete lack of understanding of anything beyond ones own narrow mind.
Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism (Bhavacakra or Wheel of Becoming, for those who don't know) - pretty much every religion in the world has a concept of Hell where the damned are punished for their sins. Whether it's atonement or rebalancing of karma, the concept of Hell is present in every religion and on every country.
EDIT - before some idiot tries to act smart, I'll say it first - whether one's own image of Hell fits with someone elses image of what Hell is like, is another question entirely; my point isn't that everyone views Hell the same, but rather that the concept is present everywhere. It's not a Christian idea; it's a universal idea that's present in every culture and every religion.

Well this is just me but... Water moats are so wet and dirty and annoying.... Real men make moats of liquid hellfire forged in the bowels of the earth and torn from the teat of the unholy adminium. Real MANLY Men create a LAVAFALL of death.
I'm a Christian and I don't have a problem with it being called hell. I don't believe in hell anyways, at least not the way most Christians describe it. Those Christians down in the bible belt love preaching fire and brimstone, they forget their God is supposed to be a loving merciful God.
Hell is simple and has a good meaning to it. Underworld, abyss, hades, or anything else just doesn't seem right when hell is described as a place of burning brimstone and fire. The other names sound more dark and gloomy.
I guess everyone had their own taste. For me, it's going to be Hell.
As a Christian, I couldn't care less about it being named Hell.

I am assuming you mean based off of logic and common sense, I should not be offended. My post could be rephrased has such: As a Christian, not being someone who does not think the hole world is out to persecute me every chance they get and gets he is a minority and does not fight petty battles and who is quite ashamed of what people think Christians are and wanted to show people that not all Christians are crazy and get offended at the slightest thing that might apply to Christianity and whines and complains until the hole world 'respects' there beliefs, I couldn't care less about in being named Hell. Not to derail the thread off-topic, carry on.
EDIT: xmacro, in 'edit 2' are you referring to 'i <3 mc' or me?
EDIT 2: After further study if your post, I am pretty sure you are referring to me.
I know pretty much every religion has a concept of hell, I am aware it is not unique to Christianity. 'Christians' are usually the first to complain about stuff like this, so I was pointing out that as one, I am not objecting. The reason I pointed out I was Christian was, if I simply said "I am not offended by the name" it does not carry much weight. It's like, congrats, your not crazy. But (sadly), saying I am Christian adds more weight to the statement, it's more like, "As someone in a class of people who are usually the first to complain about stuff like this, I am not complaining".
What agitates me is, in every thread that could possibly be about any type of religion, there is someone like you grandstanding about there beliefs, and people who differ from them a ignorant and stupid. That makes me think, that's sounds a lot like the people you are dissing.
EDIT 3: That last bit(paragraph) was unnecessary, my apologies.

Warned.
wait so we can criticize someone scientific logic, but not their religious logic?
whats the difference?
someones logic is their logic, and is always relevant to their explanations.
I am a Christian, and I didn't like it being called 'Hell.' However, not because it somehow offended me, but because it brings to mind the "fire and death and blood and heavy metal!" sort of mentality of Doom rather than the more innocent fun that is Minecraft. It's really not a major thing, but I'm glad the name is changing, just for aesthetic reasons.

From what I see, he was just making a stupid jab at someone's beliefs, not actually arguing about anything.

Religion isn't logic, its faith. Nietzsche defined faith as "not wanting to know what is true". If one could logically arrive at a divine truth, there would be no faith, only understanding.
This is the inherent conflict between reason and religion.
Its a conflict that is thousands of years old at this point. The Gods change, the people change, but the argument remains the same.
Considering nothing is named in game anyway, even if he officially came out and declared the new dimension was called "hoodly doodly dingle flops" we'd still call it hell, because it looks and feels like hell.

This is exactly where the problem lies. You seem to think we should all play peaceful or hard mode. Well to tell you the truth, your definition of a challenge is not the same as mine. There IS a middle ground which many players fit into.
