In the latest PCGamer preview, it mentioned that Notch was thinking about changing the dimension from being Hell to avoid offending people.
I just wanted to see if there were any other people like me, who would be saddened if this change took place--who want to see it be named Hell, and nothing else!
(And/or who will still be calling it Hell even if it's officially something else)
If people get mad at the game because they think its making light of HELL in the christian religion...
Well, tey clearly are TRYING to get offended, in that case. Because Hell is its nickname, not its religious connotation.
Hell as many meanings in colloquial english that are NOT literal. Such as 'man, work was HELL today.'
I think it's more in order to avoid any religious connotations than to avoid offending anyone. "Hell" drags too much baggage with it. See the countless threads about hell being underground, or a place where you go after you die.
Personally, I don't mind the name "Hell," but I do agree that a different name has several advantages.
If it comes to the point where Notch will lose players because of a name, I'd be much more happy for him to change it from hell to something else. Besides, its not like it will change the game completely, if at all. Its like the adaminium-bedrock debate. Some people call it one, some call it the other, but it has zero impact on the game itself.
I'll still call it Hell no matter what Notch ends up calling it. It's a horrible place with lava and demons. If you don't call it Hell then you're being a hypersensitive douchebag.

Minecraft is predominately Medieval... lets called it Hades instead.
Watch the dissing of people's religious beliefs.
It's fine if you don't believe it, but don't go insulting it because of your belief (ro disbelief, as the case may be)
"I am not in favour of offending or hurting anyone just for the sake of it. But I am intrigued and mystified by the disproportionate privileging of religion in our otherwise secular societies. All politicians must get used to disrespectful cartoons of their faces, and nobody riots in their defence. What is so special about religion that we grant it such uniquely privileged respect? As H. L. Mencken said: 'We must respect the other fellows's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children are smart.'"

I just think that Notch shouldn't be making a decision based off of fear of religious uprising. And that "Hell" is a bad-ass word. And that people have been making up their own versions of "Hell" for various areligious purposes for centuries (Dante Alighieri: writing about Hell to declare love for a married woman, and thumbing his nose to the church, since 1308)--and that it's not terribly offensive anyway.
Besides. When I'm playing the game and I'm in another dimension filled with explosions and death and lava and fire and unkillable demon-like monsters... I'm sorry, call it The Way or The Underworld or whatever, but we all know what it really is.

It's based more off the Ways than Hell though, it's direct inspiration came from an alternate travel dimension, not the Judeo-Christian concept of hell.
And I'm pretty sure I haven't seen any hells with flying jellyfish before...

hell has long since gone BEYOND the christian meaning of hell in fiction.

MINECRAFT FACTS: BIG LIST OF WHAT NOTCH HAS ACTUALLY SAID ABOUT THE PLANNED FEATURES OF MINECRAFT
Hell is cheesy, always has been always will be, I'm all for Notch changing the name. Make it his world!
I'm not offended by "hell" I just find the entire concept cheesy, and below any good story teller.
and aside from being a lake of fire in another dimension, it has NOTHING to do with hell.
So, perhaps an original name would make the most sense.

Though, for the life of me, I can't think of a name that would be appropriate.
And make a big mob called Masterblaster.
"Embargo on!"

Hell is a nickname because of all the fire and lava, not the official name.
