so mobs will spawn deep down in relatively well lit areas dose that mean that my underground fortress of solitude will no longer have any solitude to it? and evry time i go down into it there will be creepers waiting for me?
Build your fortress of underground solitude in the underground roof of hell.
Where (In theory) monsters should behave most like their above ground counterparts when it comes to the light spectrum.

Why stop at the melee? Just admit (Halo) Reach itself was a mistake. It is, really. The Hindenburg was less broken than this.
Presumably correct, however if you play smart, and by smart I mean SPAM MOTHAFU#@ING LANTERNS ON EVERY SQUARE INCH OF YOU FORT! (They shouldn't be able to spawn due to my presumed belief that mobs won't spawn of an active light source) Worst come to worst, spawn a single half step half block on all of your floors, once again mobs can't spawn of halfblocks (Only when it's a half block, not a full block created from 2 half blocks)

that's gonna look awful :sad.gif:
I for one thing half steps look nice.... And as for the lanterns, well.... Just pretend your playing Alan Wake..? Yeah, yeah think Alan Wake.

very deep, bedrock deep. i even grow my own trees down there but i have a tree house mansion on the surface maybe i will just move up there when the update happens and delete my chunks.
It's certainly very doable in the current game to make large underground structures. You can certainly bring trees and wheat underground. Theoretically speaking, you can currently set up the game so that you don't need to go overground at all, except maybe for sand and clay.
This change could change how feasible it is to do something like this. Especially for the deepest dungeons.

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?

Then you CAN get ready, lava lighting will work just fine, or should, cut some spaces in the roof from above, put glass in the bottom, and lava in the top, you should have time before the update.
well i dont really like the look of lava lighting for my base. i will just wait and see if the lighting thing is. It may be like that dude said, just replace with lanterns and your done.
I don't suppose Notch has mentioned whether Lanterns are any brighter or if the brightness reaches further at all has he? Maybe just a simple replacement with lanterns will do the job. (Purely speculatory i admit)
He has, on the podcast he said something like, mabey lanterns go 2 times as far or something, i'll work it out.
I've had a few surprises in bases connected to mine shafts as it is, so I'm used to making the portions of my bases that are close to slightly-lit underground areas to have several airlock style doors that give me a chance to retreat if I find some unexpected surprise.
I doubt Notch will require something as drastic as lanterns every other square to ensure no spawns. I think that would effectively cause most people to avoid making underground bases. I'm not sure what a reasonable threshold would be, but I'm pretty sure my standard 10 spaces per torch isn't going to cut it anymore. That's fine with me; I'll just have to figure out how to adapt my mining style to the new rules.
This is where invested base defenses should come in handy. But notch doesn't seem to like the idea of automatons or "friendly" machines that helps you survive and outwit the entire game. He'd rather amputate your arms and legs and leave you there to try to survive.....
Slimes are strictly regional as of this version, so more often than not they're no problem at all. I live 10 blocks above adminium and I've not seen a single slime once.
As for the mob problem, I am somewhat concerned. Depending on how much lighting is needed to keep them away, I may end up having to move out and start a new base, not that I loath the aspect, starting from scratch is what keeps this game fun on many occasions.
i personally like the idea, it gives a Moria feeling to those huge mines, pretty cool for rp lovers, and action-thirsty adventurers.
The only problem IMO is that in MC even the deepest of mines aren't that deep. Certainly not deep enough to give me a Moria feeling. In fact, I spend so much time at bedrock level that it feels like the natural starting point of the map and I know that the surface is just a short climb away. Maybe I was a dwarf in a previous life?
Yeah, I know what you mean. I thought my mines were only about halfway to bedrock, turns out they were just a couple of layers above.
I wouldn't mind Notch doubling the map height, it's actually not that deep right now.
BUILD MORE FARMS
Wrong game.

How deep is this place? can you use lava lighting in the floor or roof? (or walls?)

... Wait, that would just make him sadistic!
So my panic room should be an epic tower.
Sounds good to me.
I mean, deep underground is already a pretty dangerous place to build your base, this just makes it more dangerous.
