This is a hilarious Idea. Don't know how much merit it has, but if notch implements it, it certainly would be a fun addition, if not for the ability to build *FLYING PIRATE SHIPS!!!!!*, then certainly for the shitstorm on the forums when radically secular minecrafters argue endlessly about the addition of popular culture into the game.
People call it Hell because such a place is symbolic of suffering and hardship. It is not going to be easy to survive there, let alone thrive and tame the land. Also, Notch is a fan of the old Doom games and is planning this for the Halloween update, so it all coincides with a theme.
Besides which, you punch sheep for wool. If it were "heaven" you would pretty much be barred from the realm anyway. Also, Notch still wants to implement floating island biomes. If need be, just keep punching sheep until you have enough wool to make a 'city of clouds' in a sky biome.
Similarly, I'm not entirely sure we want an easier but slower method of transit, since some of us have very large maps and can always just move during the day.
I'm not religiously offended by the concept of 'heaven', but I find it an inappropriate term for this game. I don't think it would bring much into the game. An interplanetary biome? Sure. Skyworld? Of course. Heaven? That's a very specific concept.

GENERATION 18: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
I do like the idea of an dangerous raised floating island biome. Rather than angels and whatnot, huge white birds and other themed monsters that might not do too much damage, but you'd be at great danger of getting knocked off while walking about. Really when I began to think about all of this, I thought of the City in the Sky in Twilight Princess.
I'd like the "Heaven-Like" Realm to be just lots of floating islands, with only the void beneath them. (Although falling down, might auto teleport you to the normal world, up in the sky, so you can fall to your death and be able to retrieve your stuff, instead of it just disappearing into the void. If notch can make the Hell Portals lead to Hell, then there could just be a sea of transparent blocks at the bottom of the realm that teleport back to the normal world.)
There would be some, man-made looking structures, sort of like...
Only with lighter, new, block types, in large and small types, (They wouldn't be randomly generated, just a bunch of different types, randomly placed.)
Then large islands, with a base (As in, bottom, holding the stuff up.) made out of the new blocks, and they'd have mini-Biomes on them, allowing you to have easier access to different biomes for certain items and such. The downside, would be a heightened danger up there, bigger, tougher mobs. (Excluding biome specific mobs.) And the danger of falling over the edge, and possible wind-based mobs that can push you back a bit, and try to push you over the edge. (Maybe their wind attack could also deflect arrows? Mwuaha!)
Also, Heaven wouldn't be a 'Compressed' world, like Hell. 1 Block in the Sky Realm (Eden?), would = 1 Block in the Normal World, not 1 Block in the Sky Realm = 10 Blocks in the Normal World.
Don't you think for the people who don't believe in god, that would kinda be a slap in the face? Why not just raise the Sky limit by 64 and end it there?
Why would it? Atheists like myself think of the Bible, Torah, and Qu'ran as fables fully compatible with fantasy video gaming.
Why would non-Christians be offended by the presence of Heaven in a fantasy game? I love Odin Sphere and I don't believe in Norse Mythology, it's not like this would be any different.
Now if Notch felt like using it as a means to convert people to Christianity and bombarded us with Bible verses or something like that, then I might be bothered by it, but thankfully Notch isn't an idiot.
How about a 'weeping' heaven, full of 'weeping' angels? (JK)
But seriously, yeah, skyland would be ok (even call it heaven, I don't mind.) but angels and god as enemies is going too far, and so is sending you there for your gameplay style (good/bad)
just make it a (semi)peaceful place in the sky, full of floating islands (not clouds) and stuff like that.

Passive minecrafter FTW.
Hamumu.com, the site I should thank for helping me find minecraft.
In heaven everything is the opposite of what happens on earth. Creepers and skeletons happily hop around the countryside leaving you alone, while chickens are like psychopats who think of nothing else except blowing you up.
I think that should be a feature of hell. After all, why would the evil-related enemy mobs be hopping around heaven (which by religious beliefs is the place for people and creatures that AREN'T evil) completly peacefully, with a, I guess you could say neutral, peaceful mob going batshit insane? If it was hell instead for that I'd understand. The creepers and that would live there so they'd like it and be peaceful down there, while the chickens and that who have been tormented by the higher beings of hell would want to kill everything they see.
If you dislike the idea of heaven because it'd be peaceful, just don't bother with it. Besides, if I really have to go to religious beliefs, heaven is considered a peaceful place by mankind (humans. Obviously) therefore, it'd be peaceful. Hell is considered a place of torment and evil, (yet again religious) it'd be a challenge. So you have your challenge as well as a place if you stop wanting a challenge.

I'm glad my idea is getting attention, but I think people need to lighten up. This is a video game, not reality. I mean no disrespect, but just let people enjoy themselves and quit being a downer. It's not like adding this to the game would be a bad thing or hurt anybody. It would be an enjoyable place to explore and build things on. Just because it would clash with your beliefs isn't a good enough reason to deny the enjoyment it could give others. Besides, like I said, it's a video game.
Now, as for people saying it lacks purpose, my idea of this new realm is very rough. It literally has limitless potential when you give it some thought. I'm liking some of the ideas in this thread. Flying pigs would just make my year............*dreaming of flying pigs*.......golden roads and golden apples on trees would also be splendid ideas. Also, the "Heaven" realm doesn't necessarily have to be a literal Heaven. Notch calls the new realm "Hell", so why not call a land in the sky Heaven? It really only makes sense and isn't meant to offend anyone. There could be floating islands and magical creatures in it. Griffons? Dragons? Pegases (I think that's the correct plural of "Pegasus")? I think it would be fun. For a game that has no real point you can't argue against a new, seemingly pointless area being added if not for its wonder and exploration potential. But like people are discussing in this topic, "Heaven" could have many purposes. It could simply be a fun place, it could have new materials and creatures, really, the possibilities are delightful. Please everyone, keep the ideas coming. Expand towards the sky!
1. The plural is pegasi, but nice try though.
2. Like the idea, but if it's to fit with the general theme, peaceful dragons only. (It would fit with the reli... ah damnit. I gotta stop being a priest!)
3. Good ideas with multiple purposes, a place to relax from a big battle against skeletons and creepers, maybe be creative while up there, gather a few new matierals, all sorts of stuff.
4. If pigs fly, get me a diploma.
5. I hate puns.

Well, in minecraft we all know that **** is created by other **** by finding that **** and doing **** to it, you know what i mean?
Really, the only reason I call this prposed new realm "Heaven" is because it only sounds logical. It's a land above the clouds with winged creatures and places not normally seen on land. Lighten up people. (I'm still going to refer to this place as Heaven, but I'll put it in quotations to leave it open to interpretation)
Anyway, here's some purposes I've thought up to make "Heaven" a more necessary place for those who can't just view it as a fun place to explore and enjoy:
1.) Enemies - I believe I've heard Notch say he wanted to add dragons to the game eventually, well I'm pretty sure all of us view dragons as these mythical and very powerful creatures. Well, what better place to put them than "Heaven"? They could be a very powerful and rare enemy, almost like a guardian of "Heaven".
2.) New Blocks - "Heaven" would have structures almost like palaces that are made of a new Marble block (In fact, all structures would be made of Marble since it has a special property in conjunction with another new block I will be talking about). It's a very aesthetically pleasing block and perhaps you could use these blocks to craft a marble slab that you could take apart pixel by pixel instead of block-at-a-time in order to make fancy and detailed sculptures. In order to make this feasible, you would need a pickaxe to take it apart by pixels and either your bare hands or any other object to take the sculpture apart by whole blocks.
Cloud Blocks could also be added as an easier way to get to "Heaven" or for whatever your imagination can come up with. Once you mine a cloud block and place it somewhere, it will float up from the ground until it slowly reaches "Heaven" and rejoins the special clouds that only "Heaven" has. It could have the ability to support your character's weight as if it were nothing, but it could only support the weight of about two or three of any other block aside from Marble which would also be weightless (hence the reason why all of "Heaven's" structures are made of Marble; or at least they would need a Marble base since it would cancel out the weight of other blocks as long as they are on top of a marble block).
[EDIT] - I'm actually thinking maybe "Heaven" clouds should be stationary but still float since they're solid and if they move it could cause problems. This would still make them unique and if we could think of enough cool things to add to "Heaven" then we wouldn't need the slow transportation aspects of "Heaven" and traveling via moving cloud.
Don't you think for the people who don't believe in god, that would kinda be a slap in the face? Why not just raise the Sky limit by 64 and end it there?
Goes both ways. Someone could not necessarily believe in Hell either, its just Heaven is more offensive...
then you could build something on a moving cloud and see it float by every now and then.
So what if you connected 2 clouds together and then built a vertical tower to attack it to the ground? Your computer would
And then I would go mine and and and guess would notch would say to me?

Notice: If you notice this notice you will notice that this notice is not worth noticing
Whats with you guys that get all anal when someone calls something heaven or hell. I don't believe in god. It doesn't bother me what you call it. It is a floating cloud island whats wrong with that. It is like Skypiea from One Piece.
But in all honesty, Heaven would seem kinda stupid. You wouldn't go to heaven and ravage the 'natural beauty' of all that is good. Seems like a straight shot of going straight to hell to me. (where I definitely belong and will be moving my entire castle to upon release, no matter the consequences.)
I take that as an insult. Everyone who isn't you, even people who aren't christian, might take that as an insult to humans in general. As christians kinda make up about half the damn population. so by saying that you kinda insulted people in general. The rest of the quote is somewhat okay but I just had to highlight this one bit. I wouldn't mind flying enemies and floating island specific mobs, but cloud blocks and a city in the sky with the name of Heaven? I'm a bit skeptical, especially since Hell is being made to hang a lantern on the existence of portals and to give extra challenge for the convenience.
Then there's the logistic issues. If heaven is supposed to be up so high no one can see it, we'd need another randomly generated world tied to our saves along with another set of portals, which would make the game overly complicated. Otherwise, it would be too low to make sense to call it heaven, since you could just make a tower to it.
And besides, I like to think Creative Mode is heaven/ the Dream World for a Minecraft survivor.
BTW, Christians do not take up 1/2 the world population. They take up a good number, but they are nowhere near that level. That being said, calling someone a christfag wasn't cool. Leave that in /b/.
