That may be so but no one says you have to use the lanterns. Torches just wont last forever like they do now which is more realistic. Hell, the lanterns shouldnt last forever either but thats a different argument.
You can always switch to redstone torches and a torch and then relight the torch every how many hours as required.
No one is forced into hell but hell is the part of the future of the game so if you hate it enough to walk away you might as well do so now. (or use an inventory editor to cheat yourself some lanterns) But no amount of complaining on the forums (and ultimatums that notch will never read) is going to change the vision notch has for his game.
In all respects, i do not really care about lanterns as long as they do not require iron. If they require iron i would be unable to light my mines with all of the iron i've ever found, let alone my castle and my great wall of china(work in progress). If lanterns require going into hell, i need to know how the portals into hell work before forming my opinion. Although preliminary feelings tend toward annoyed.
Overall i like the idea of hell being added, especially if the monsters in hell can follow you back out...
I think the worst parts of this update are the ignorant ranters (but that comes with every update) (note; that's not all ranters. just the ones who make ignorant assumptions concerning things they have no idea about), a large amount of people thinking that the update is already out and the similar, and how far away Halloween feels now. ;-;
Just killing the enemies to "live" isn't incentive, nor rewarding. Peaceful is faster, and achieves the same thing. Ending up with their drops of combat-oriented stuff might as well be the same as ending up with nothing because I'm just "encouraged" by the game to go into further terrible combat.
I play on Normal for these reasons (in no particular order of priority):
- The only time I play MC is when I'm LPing it. The occasional enemy encounter keeps things interesting for viewers. I personally find them to be little more than a nuisance. But my audience enjoys seeing me get killed by a sneaky creeper now and then.
- I don't mind having enemies around as a threat level to be aware of. However, they have not been the focus of gameplay, nor should they be. I see them more as "guardians" of resources. Again, crappy combat mechanics make for dull combat. Limiting encounters keeps them interesting enough to keep surprises in without getting fed up about it altogether.
- I also play on Normal because "Normal' tends to mean "average" difficulty. Not too hard, not too easy, but somewhat of a balance. I assume at some point MC will achieve this as well. Right now you can debate whether the "average" makes any real difference but Normal should be the gauge from which Hard is cranked up in difficulty and easy is cranked down.
And to be honest, I tend to mention in discussions that I play on Normal, because a lot of people seem to forget there are other difficulties beyond Peaceful and Hard. I'm a casual player. I like the spice enemies bring and can deal with it rather well when necessary, but they're not my focus, so I'm certainly not hardcore crazy like so many people around here seem to be. I'm in the middle of Peaceful and Hardcore. Which should be Normal.
When Notch says less bugs online, he means that spiders will spawn less often.
It seems like that, in Minecraft, there are a LOT of people who play on peaceful only (my girlfriend, for example. She loves playing a game in which she can't lose in any way). So this whole 'scarier depths' update wouldn't bother me no matter what, as long as those options are still out there. I usually play normal or hard, depending on what mood I'm in, btw.
Something I WOULD hate to see (and this probably will happen a lot, another thread has already been made about it) is my house burned down from me simply trying to relight a torch. I'll also hate having to restart a world because I can't find my way around in my complicated mineshafts because all my torches burned out at once.
So what would totally tick YOU off if it was in this update?
Anything that drastically moves the core gameplay away from mining and crafting, exploring stuff and building stuff. New mobs, biomes, and even dimensions are all well and good, but the second the game becomes more about running away from and/or fighting monsters and less about devising ingenious buildings and contraptions to keep the monsters at bay, it ceases being something unique. There are ten gajillion games out there where the core gameplay is fighting badguys in real time from a first-person or third-person perspective, and many of them are much better than anything of which minecraft is likely capable.
The bit about the ghast being an unfair fight combined with the bit about the ghast appearing in hell, with the addition of the info that lanterns can only be crafted with materials mined in hell... that makes me very squeamish. In combination with the fact that torches will only burn for so long and that mobs will spawn more often in the lower reaches of the map, this means that the constraints that players can place on monsters through ingenuity dwindle while the number and power of monsters grows. The amount that players are forced out of a zone of relative safety will necessarily be tremendously increased by these changes.
I think that future updates must have more mining and crafting mechanics, things for players to experiment with like minecart physics, redstone circuitry, and the like for the game to retain its flavor. And future updates must not make it prohibitively difficult to play with these ingame toys. If I can't build a redstone track switcher at the bottom of my mine because I have to constantly fight off mobs; if I can't return to explored areas and have reasonable expectations about those explored areas remaining as safe as when I found them, then what's the point of playing Minecraft instead of one of the great combat games with great graphics and interesting combat mechanics out there?
TL;DR - it's called Minecraft - not Monsterfight - and the core gameplay should remain mining and crafting, not dealing with mobs and epic boss battles or whatever. It should not be a challenge to participate in the core gameplay, and if it ever becomes a challenge, then Minecraft will lose its unique flavor.
Just basically what WOULDN'T you like to see as part of this update.
Ok, this is bugging me. You should have written it "what you wouldn't like to see" instead of "what wouldn't you like to see."
Your original post means the exact opposite of what you were trying for.
Actually, that was completely correct.
What would not you like to see. Sounds a little funky, but it's correct.
And it means exactly what I meant. In fact it's better than what you wrote, as, "Just basically what you wouldn't like to see as part of this update," is not correct. In your version that makes my sentence a dependent clause, which does not stand by itself. My version SHOULD have had a comma, I admit it, but was otherwise correct. Err, unless I forgot a question mark too. Whoops.
Just basically, what WOULDN'T you like to see as part of this update?
Alright, I see where both of us got confused. If it were a statement then you are correct. I meant it as a question.
I kind of meant this more of a joke, but I guess we can get serious too.
In all honesty what would suck for me would be if Hell was particularly difficult to get to at all. I want access.

Wenn ist das Nunstück git und Slotermeyer? Ja! Beiherhund das Oder die Flipperwaldt gersput!
yeah here we go, In peaceful you can still die by falling too far and in lava, so your girlfriend has been decieved. also the name of the game mode is called "Survival" this implies running away and struggling to stay alive, also there is already info out about a new game mode in which you cannot craft and its based on raiding dungeons for loot and fun. Meh, I doubt anyone enjoys any of your captures Oldgamer, by the way you make it sound your relatively scared of encounters (fight only when you have to) and should probably stick to creative mode, though I can see why viewers would revel in seeing you killed.
The bit about the ghast being an unfair fight combined with the bit about the ghast appearing in hell, with the addition of the info that lanterns can only be crafted with materials mined in hell... that makes me very squeamish.
I thought the thing about the lantern materials was just speculation? Did notch say anything about it that I missed?
Lanterns may need material found in Hell:
Wazupmaster: "Have you decided how lanterns will be made yet?"
Notch: "you might have to go into hell." (Oct 11)
