What rampant, baseless speculation in this excuse for a thread...
Look, nobody will know the recipe for lanterns until the update is released. But it makes no sense that lanterns will require any more than mundane ingredients -- no trips to Hell, no super-rare minerals. My guess is Torch + Glass; Sand is plentiful but requires some work to melt into glass, and torches already require coal. At least, that's my take on crafting an item that gives permanent light, when permanent light is THE most important factor to SURVIVAL in SURVIVAL MODE.
That is a horrible idea, too. Worse because...
1. It's permanent light, so it should be harder to get. I get 2 stacks of glass, and just as many torches. I make glass without any work! Istant lanterns, kills the whole point of having torches be temporary!
2. Torches would be temporary light sources. For a PERMANENT light source... you wouldn't be able to find a block like that in the normal minecraft world. However, Hell might have some.
3. Check notch's twitter. This is real information, all actual quotes. Go check for evidence before you think I'm being some idiot who is making things up.
4. Notch will know the recipe. And I never said anybody else will. So you think NOTCH is RETARDED for not knowing the official crafting recipe, which HE MADE? D= You disgust me!

Ok I know this is kind of off topic, but if people want lanterns with half light of torches I'll use redstone torches...
Torch = Light level 14
Redstone Torch = Light level Seven
It decreases by one per block.

Notice: If you notice this notice you will notice that this notice is not worth noticing
my point is that builders should be entitled to build in alpha, but they shouldn't be such wimps about fighting, i mean yeah, when im on my cart track i occasionally (when i remember to at least) put it on peaceful so a creeper wont stop my cart while im looking behind me watching mobs chase me, but on the other hand, alot of builders use ONLY peaceful, never hard, or normal, so i really think you guys should stick to what notch dictates, as he is obviously the only living god left
I'm primarily a builder, but I'm also a survivalist, so I refuse to play on Peaceful, ever. That said, there are many types of people who will play this game, and Notch should be careful not to alienate any of them. Already, I've reported that several of my friends refuse to play this game because of the utterly broken overland spawns; but they are like me, they want SOME kind of challenge! But that will all be fixed in Beta, most likely -- at least, I hope.

1) The whole point of the change from torches to lanterns was since people was spamming torches when Light should be a more difficult task. It kind of makes the whole change mute if people can make 2,000+ lanterns just as easily, or just with a tiny bit more effort. It will be out of a harder material to find then just coal, glass, and stone as well as not being infinate.
2) Bringing the real world into a game where you can make a wooden axe that works as well as have to make sticks out of planks of wood is not that great of an idea. AS well as the ability to travel into a hellish world. Who would of thought?
Oh and P.S. we don't have perment lightsources in the real world. The closest thing you can call perment is Biolumiesnt creatures or the sun. Everything else dies out with no electricity/fuel or cools down and gives no mroe light (magma/lava). So yes, it does make sence that we would have to explore another world to find something that gives off light forever.
3) Lanters will not be as easy to make as torches. Having to go to hell will just make that all that more clearer for people. Oh and he wasn't misquoted. He said those exact lines.
So what? It takes work to make glass & mine coal, but that's all that should be required to create a lantern.
Well it's obvious that you've got your own opinion. Doesn't mean Notch shares it.

Permanent? First of all, nothing is permanent. Our lights are powered by a fuel source just like torches are. Second, we have electricity and nuclear fusion. How can you even compare our technology to that present in Minecraft?

Calm down. Notch said "You may need to go into hell". Someone made a thread about it because it's informative. You aren't justified in getting all pissy about it just because it implies something that you don't want.
So you want everyone who enjoys playing without fighting mobs to just quit? That's rather selfish.
The point is that the purpose of the game is to SURVIVE. If you're playing a game mode called "Survival", you have no justification for expecting not to fight mobs. You have no right to call it unfair because you knew what you were getting into and chose to play anyway. That's like buying Super Smash Brothers and saying it's unfair that you can't play as Sonic the Hedgehog.
Permanent? First of all, nothing is permanent. Our lights are powered by a fuel source just like torches are.
We also have automated systems and hired laborers to refuel our real-world light sources -- neither of which exist in Minecraft. Seriously, dude, think about it -- how many torches do you have right now, protecting your perimeter? Could you imagine having to replace those torches EVERY SINGLE DAY, or however long they last? There's so much busywork already required in this game, that without lanters (and the fact that all existing torches are being automatically upgraded, thank god) I would have quit the game, permanently.

They are not comparable. They are two entirely separate systems. You cannot directly compare one to the other, except to make analogies. What's important is that the system works within itself, by it's own laws and boundaries. And besides, I don't hear anyone complaining about the wonky physics and floating islands, or resurrecting at full health after you die (and you can even get your stuff back, if you're fast enough); or the fact that you can build a 12,000-ft. skyscraper without a single piece of scaffolding. These things don't match our real world, why should they exist in Minecraft?

Informative? Hardly. Somebody saw Notch's twitter, misread it or misinterpreted it, and never realized he was wrong or is too proud to admit he was wrong. (This type of stupid **** always happens just before patch day.) As for justification in getting what I want...you better believe it. I think notch is actually some type of succubus that feeds on the drama and anguish of the minecraft fans. Only thing that explains the amount of grief that comes out of almost every thing he posts. The trolls on the boards are just his minions for when he needs a snack.

Quit the game then. No one is stopping you. You're going to have to survive with out a perment light source on new saves untill you can get to hell then. I think it is a great idea for having the item needed to make torches be in hell since it accually makes people need to go into it other then having it being a "if you want, you can" thing.
I don't even use torches to protect my perimeter. I've always used a pool of laval that is 2x2. Not only does it give off light just as good as torches, it also kills monsters who would wander in from the dark.
The whole point of the Torch change is to stop people from spamming Light. You are going to have to THINK on what you want to protect. Having Lanterns just as easy to make (out of stone, a few glass, and then a torch) makes the whole point of even having the torch change become moot. HAving it made out of those simple materials will not stop people from spamming light.
If you want spammable light, get a mod that changes torches to perment again, you know some one would do it sooon after the release of halloween.
Unless you're suggesting Notch has ladybits, I think you mean incubus!
I thought about that but an incubus feeds off females and this IS the internet. :-P Plus I believe most lore allows for a succubus to take any form they choose, usually whatever their target desires. That does bring up a good point, which one feeds off of a gay person?
So what? It takes work to make glass & mine coal, but that's all that should be required to create a lantern.
That kills the point of lanterns. The goal was to make permanent light HARD to obtain. It takes 5 seconds to make some glass, and coal is very common. Besides that, coal is already used for torches, so why make a torch when you can make a lantern? *cough*moron*cough*

Two things.

2. You are not entitled to get what you want out of the game. You paid to support Notch while he made his game. It isn't your project and you don't have any say in the way it works. If you don't like going to hell for lanterns, then what you are entitled to do is deal with it, get a refund, or cheat. Have fun.

But I can also tell my friends what I think about this game, and how disappointed I was that they ****ed it all up. I'm just going to assume that lanterns aren't from hell because, quoting MrTorus:
"Notch is replacing ALL previous torches with lanterns, regardless if they are on chests, on walls or inventory. You DO NOT need to freak out about all your torches."
and then:

However, there's NO GUARANTEE that current saves will be able to get all the features in the new update (especially biomes and hell). Notch hasn't explained how these new features will work with old saves."
Since if we had to go to hell to get the lantern, we would not be able to get the lantern material on older saves if hell is not accessible on them, I doubt the material is really from hell, unless hell will be added into older saves.
