So we've turned into maintenance craft have we?
I certainly hope regular torches last awhile, otherwise this is going to be tedious getting out my BFG9000 and Super Armor every time I need a lamp.
Edit:
This wouldn't be so bad if you could actually, you know, see somewhat in dark areas and at night.
I think notch is actually some type of succubus that feeds on the drama and anguish of the minecraft fans. Only thing that explains the amount of grief that comes out of almost every thing he posts. The trolls on the boards are just his minions for when he needs a snack.
I think he would be an incubus, unless you know something I don't.

Also considering a lot of players who want permanent light will also be peaceful players who won't want to have to voyage to hell every time they want to light up their recent building project.
I play on Peaceful roughly half the time and Easy the other half. I think I'll mind hell a lot less on Peaceful than Easy TBH. When lava's the only real (not self-inflicted) hazard you have to deal with, you should get fairly good at avoiding it after awhile right?
@[USERNAME REMOVED] you MIGHT have to go into hell..
We know nothing for sure.
If that is so, then why would he bring it up? Sure, to add suspense. But I think this does the exact opposite - we already have tons of mystery surrounding lanterns, and this reveals some very likely information about them.
Assuming he wasn't joking, I can see his logic. This will be a permanent light source in lanterns, yes? Regular laterns need some source of energy. Like burning oil or using coal. Oil gets used up and coal burns out. Something that can give off light indefinitely isn't going to be found in the normal minecraft world. Having to go to hell for a rock or resource that is eternally burning and hence giving off light permanently makes a good amount sense. At least to me.
Whatever he does decide, I'm sure it won't be impossible to get a hold of it. Just difficult.
Does it really surprise you? Notch could add magical code that makes the gold in-game come through the screen so we would all be rich and people would STILL ***** that he didn't do it for diamonds too.
Why does everyone keep saying info was leaked and screen shots were leaked? A leak would imply that the info got out without notch's consent. He said/showed these things himself. Its not leaked information, just... information.
Yes. The name of the game is Survival Mode. That word, "survival," implies a struggle against adversity. At the moment, within 5-10 minutes of starting, we can punch down 1 or 2 trees, craft 1 wooden pickaxe, mine 1 vein of coal from the side of cliff and have the materials to create enough torches to never again so much as think of dangerous mobs. There is no challenge in that. Until the Halloween Update, there is about as much survival in Survival Mode as there is in a weekend long Girl Scout camping trip to a local playground after shopping at Wal-Mart for enough supplies to last 2 weeks. Suck it up.

I would love to magically get a future version of the finished survival just to see how much "unfair" people will think it is compared to the candyland version we have now. Zombies/dragons/exploding dicks aren't stopped by leaves/glass/wool? WHAT?

So you want everyone who enjoys playing without fighting mobs to just quit? That's rather selfish.
Sure it is rather easy to hole up in survival, but it is also easy to go out at night and find creepers, or explore a cave and die quite a ways from your spawn. Difficulty is in how you play. I agree that the game is too easy right now, but punishing people who don't want to spend every second worried about death is lame. There is plenty of room in the game for all play styles, and those who want a hardcore challenge will try and build/survive in hell.
Um... play Peaceful mode? I'm sure that as Notch progresses, the differences in the difficulties will be greater as well. I hate to tell you but you want to fight mobs, you play SURVIVAL. You want to build, you play CREATIVE. At the time though, Alpha Creative is pretty much peaceful mode.

Hostile mobs are an integral part of Survival Mode's game-play. If people began to complain about spelunking, demanding all important resources be available topside, would you wish to see their demands accommodated? Or would you prefer Notch ignore them and continue developing the game? In that hypothetical scenario, who is being selfish? The people demanding special accommodation or the people who accept and enjoy MineCraft Survival Mode for what it is?
If you do not like stomping on mushroom people, do not play Super Mario World. If you do not like shooting Ukrainians, do not play STALKER. If you do not like dungeon delving, do not play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Likewise, if you do not like avoiding, fighting or evading hostile mobs in Survival Mode, stay out of Hell. If you want to build and explore in peace, make do with torches or use an editor to give yourself lanterns. You could also wait for an update to creative.
What rampant, baseless speculation in this excuse for a thread...
Look, nobody will know the recipe for lanterns until the update is released. But it makes no sense that lanterns will require any more than mundane ingredients -- no trips to Hell, no super-rare minerals. My guess is Torch + Glass; Sand is plentiful but requires some work to melt into glass, and torches already require coal. At least, that's my take on crafting an item that gives permanent light, when permanent light is THE most important factor to SURVIVAL in SURVIVAL MODE.

^^ hahaha win, also i think i agree with you, actually, i really do, anyway, the point of alpha survival is survival right? the point of creative is to create right? sort of. why would notch add all this capability for construction in alpha if you wern't meant to use it? my point is that builders should be entitled to build in alpha, but they shouldn't be such wimps about fighting, i mean yeah, when im on my cart track i occasionally (when i remember to at least) put it on peaceful so a creeper wont stop my cart while im looking behind me watching mobs chase me, but on the other hand, alot of builders use ONLY peaceful, never hard, or normal, so i really think you guys should stick to what notch dictates, as he is obviously the only living god left
