Wow, who would have thought that wood catches on fire! If you are worried, build your house out of something else. Easy. He shouldn't change the game to fit your needs, change what you do to accomodate the rules.
This thread is like, it doesn't even need to be here. The replies from the wood fanboys (Yes I have a name for it) almost seem like they're TRYING to defy this.
1. Lanterns are not going to be impossible to Craft. Notch has common sense and realizes Lanterns will need to be manufactured on at least a semi-massive level.
2. Your entire house doesn't need to be a fireplace. Put the Torch against a Stone block or something until you can afford at least a couple Lanterns. But most likely by the time you get enough wood to make a decent wooden house, you'll have enough supplies of whatever to make Lanterns.
3. Wood sucks. I use it on my floors in some rooms but that's it, and they all have a stone trimming anyway. Why would you invest in a living space that can be so easily destroyed? You're asking for your own death.
When the torches go out, we use a flint and steel to relight them. Fine. But suppose your house is made of wood, and you miss the torch when you try to relight it. What happens then?
Just my two cents.
This is the same risk one takes whenever one lights a cigarette, fireplace, or barbecue grill. Carelessness with fire can always lead to singed eyebrows.
I'm just going to echo the "be less incompetent with a mouse" sentiment. I mean seriously, the damn hitbox outlines itself, if you manage to be careless enough to miss it, in your wooden house, you deserve to have your home go up in flames.
I think I'm gonna do this why just the other day I was trying to burn down an annoying tree that was growing threw my wall and WOOOSH!!! Everything was on fire...... I stopped building out of wood as should you.

RIDDLE ME THIS, batman--
--WHY IS IT that BRICK, humble BRICK [brick] , staple of pan-cultural architecture for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, grandfather to structural mechanics EONS past--
--IS HARDER TO MAKE THAN BLOCKS OF WHOLE, SOLID GODDAMN GOLD!?
Just make it out of stone is it really that hard???? I only made one of my structures out of wood... (The rest of my structures are skinny yet immensely tall castles made of stone...)

Yea... I was wondering when threads like this would just boil down to
"Um yea... Go light your torch in real life in your wooden house in a careless manner then complain that it was too easy to mess up and burn down your whole house"
This is a survival game... Open Fires Plus Wood were never a good idea in the first place... and should, as such, STAY 'not a good idea'... Things shouldn't get nerfed because people are too lazy to take their time...
Edit: Oh and before anyone goes and says "Yea you say that until it happens to your wooden minecraft house"
dude, if I mess up and burn down my wood house with fire, guess what, that's life... It would happen in real life out of the same amount of carelessness as it would in Minecraft...

Exactly. This is yet another "HURR TORCHES SUX CUS THEY DO" thread. I don't even know how these are surviving the light of day.
I like to make my floors out of TNT, but now I can't use redstone because my house blows up. Notch should completely change the game for everyone to suit my incompetence. It's only fair, it's not like I can be careful or use something else.
It sounds like none of you guys use wood as a building material. This kind of defeats the purpose of the argument. Anyone out there who does build with wood want to throw in their thoughts?
I built my stilthouse that stands in the ocean out of wood as well as a bridge, bridgehouse, and dock just onshore so I have a place to boat to and from out of wood. They're covered in torches. What do I plan to do?
Simple. I'll just not light them on fire.
And if they do catch fire by some freak accident? I'll punch the blocks out before the fire spreads. Because punching fire is manly! HAAAAAA!

He's adding hell to the game. Realism was thrown out the window a long time ago.
Punching the fire out may help, I guess. We'll just have to wait and see.

I'm with the "just use common sense" argument although it could still go wrong even if you've got a stone fireplace as can be seen in this funny although sad video, though most of you might already know it.
Oh god, this guy's reaction is just epic.
Thank you. Things can still go hilariously wrong. I'll put this complaint on hold until its proven to be an issue.
My argument is done. Carry on, gentlemen. gaaraxebeard, thanks for your support in this matter.

Oh my god you're right. I'll make a bet Notch overlooked that.
But that can be easily fixed with an Out Torch item.

Support!
Dragons need to be implemented. No arguments.
I was wondering when someone was going to suggest that. "Why not just take down the torch and replace it with a new one/lantern?"
EDIT:
That's a pretty good idea, lol.
