Yea... I was wondering when threads like this would just boil down to
"Um yea... Go light your torch in real life in your wooden house in a careless manner then complain that it was too easy to mess up and burn down your whole house"
This is a survival game... Open Fires Plus Wood were never a good idea in the first place... and should, as such, STAY 'not a good idea'... Things shouldn't get nerfed because people are too lazy to take their time...
Edit: Oh and before anyone goes and says "Yea you say that until it happens to your wooden minecraft house"
dude, if I mess up and burn down my wood house with fire, guess what, that's life... It would happen in real life out of the same amount of carelessness as it would in Minecraft...
It actually takes more carelessness to burn down your house in real life.
actually, I'd say the simplest method would be to have torches use flint & steel as a type of "ammunition" the same way a bow uses arrows. All torches are "unlit" by default, but placing them while you have flint & steel in your inventory automatically replaces them with a lit torch. When you want to relight a torch, just break it down, it'll get added back into your torches, and you place another which drains another shot from your flint & steel.
Then again, that would require people have the flint and steel before placing any torches, which is unreasonable, so 2 torches (lit and unlit) would probably be the best. all torches start out lit by default, but when you break them down and take them back into the inventory, they count as unlit torches, and those require having flint & steel in your inventory to be able to place as lit torches again. This would keep the lighting process entirely behind the scenes where it wont burn anything down accidentally.
as long as the lanterns dont need iron, im pretty much happy. I guess its just that OCD like compulsion many players get that makes us not want "temporary" stuff, just permanent lights so we can move on to other concerns. but yeah, im sure notch will come up with something that will satisfy the majority...i hope
A lot of EVERYONE is missing the point. We're not arguing whether you should build a house out of wood, or if you are, not to use torches. The worry that the OP has, and that I share somewhat, is that you could miss while using the Flint and Steel to light a torch. This is true, right? Also, I (And possibly others) would not like to lose my house because of a misclick. I'm sure almost everyone would agree.
Now, what's a simple way to remedy this? Make the torch's hitbox bigger, or make it not require Flint and Steel, rather Coal or some other ingredient to re-ignite it.
Now to those of you who go "NYAH ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO MISCLICK IN MAH MC!", well, I would not agree. What if you were at the start of the game, had just finished mining, and came back into your wooden hut during night, and some of your torches had gone out. "Oh, I don't want mobs spawning in here" you say, as you relight those torches. You miss ONE MEASLY TORCH, and your whole house burns down, exposing you and your just-gathered half-inventory of cobble to death by fire and mobs.
Maybe flaming mobs.
Would you like that?

Hi, i'm a scientist, from the NASA. I can make science, so I tell you as a pro, Minecraft is not laggy.
I disagree, the easiest building block to accquire should come with inherent risks to offset the advantage of it being cheap. If you're really worried about it, design your house around this flaw, put your torches on stone pillars.
If anything, this update would encourage creativity and innovation, as people would have to find ways around the flaws. Necessity is the mother of invention, after all.
I see your point, but still, the fact that simply re-lighting a torch could be so hazordus seems, well, a bit wrong. I like the idea that the poster had about F+S being used as some sort of ammo-type thing.

1) Missing a torch is difficult in daytime. But at night, when the torch is out, it is very dark thus much easier to miss.
2) Wood is not the easiest to get building material at all... Both dirt and stone are easier to get, and are not flammable. So what gameplay purpose is served by making wood terrible for building houses all of the sudden? None. It doesn't change the difficulty at all if you are merely surviving. The only thing that is accomplished is making architecture uglier.
3) Falcon punching flames is not at all intuitive, and most people have no idea it is possible unless they have specifically learned about it on the forums or something.

Przerwap, upon looking at some code I had just written: "...Gav... That's not how programming works."
Considering 2 blocks can't occupy the same space, regardless of the torches actual hit-box the area including room for error is 1m^3. If you miss the entire block space then you really shouldn't be playing games. Instead, you should be hurrying to the doctor about your extreme lack of hand-eye coordination.
Very good point. My top part of my house (the living area, downstairs are the mines) is made of wood. And so, I were to accidentally set my house on fire, it would totally ASDFGHJKL my plans for my house.
Unless you have parkinson's disease I don't see how you would 'miss' lighting a torch....besides that lanterns would be the better option in a home anyhow.

Well, try hit a block behind a torch. It's easy, isn't it? Just because it's a cubic world doesn't mean that each object would take up a cubic meter.
Anyway, my main argument is that it is punishing... what? Nothing. It's bot really fair just to see your house lit up just because you jerked the mouse while reaching for your Cheeze-its or whatever. A wooden shack near lava makes sense, but having your house burnt down for trying to keep it bright and safe? How does that advance gameplay?

I'm supposing that it will be fairly easy to program your way out of this, whereby a surface with a torch on it cannot be lit with flint and steel; rather, the adjoining torch will be lit.
So to accidentally light your wooden house on fire, you'd have to miss by so much as to hit the adjacent block.
When the torches go out, we use a flint and steel to relight them. Fine. But suppose your house is made of wood, and you miss the torch when you try to relight it. What happens then?
Just my two cents.
Anyone who can't be bothered to make sure they're targeting the torch before they click deserves to have their wooden house burn down.

The operative phrase in that first sentence is "you jerked the mouse", with the emphasis on "you". It's not the game's fault that YOU decided to reach for your Cheeze-its while re-lighting torches inside a flammable structure. If putting a wooden house near lava would be someone's own fault, why is not paying attention while using flint and tinder in a wooden house NOT your fault? Even if you didn't have the option of using a lantern which doesn't burn out, it's still not the least bit difficult to target a torch, if you're PAYING ATTENTION.
Are you one of those kids who, when you get in trouble for forgetting to do something, uses the excuse "it's not MY fault I forgot"? When unpleasant things happen as a result of your own carelessness, it's YOUR fault.
Okay, guys. I'm living in a wooden house and yesterday placed a bonfire in my bedroom to make some barbecue. And get my house totally burned! Insurance company refused to build me a new one! WTF, GOD?!

Ok, Jeb doing better, but mods still much more awesome than vanilla. I've totally disappointed in what Notch do, only mods can save the Minecraft.
Easy solution: Torches are being replaced with lanterns. Torches are the new object.
My brain hurts.
Also, if you cant notice that your house is made of wood before you set it on fire, then you arent really that cautious to begin with and should upgrade to stone.
thank you this is basically what I was saying, if you are aware of the issue, build stuff that doesn't burn, duh? Also the flint and steel thing is nesseccary, unless you know the secret of making fire from your finger tips, plus it adds to the challenge, what would be the point if you could just relit them at will?
I'm aware that if this is an issue that I should upgrade to stone.
However, newer players may not be
It's called learning. Flamable material is a much admired feature in the game, if you choose to make your house out of something flamable, that's your decision. If you don't acknowledge the possible consequences, you will likely suffer for it.
Your argument is like saying "I jumped off somewhere really high but then died and lost all my stuff". There's not problem with it, you learn from your mistakes. "I didn't know the giant spiders could kill me" - Learn. There's no issue here :/.

If lanterns are that far down the tech tree, I'd be using torches in a house of dirt or cobblestone as opposed to wood.
