Imma start a new map with the update.. so this wouldn't help.. I'm using my current map for concepts of what I might want to build starting out on the new map.. Making piles of lanterns so I can keep playing like I have torchs.. would be silly to me.. (I might as well just hack in lanterns..) some experimenting with mining with limiting lighting shows how it can possibly be fun ...
Here's what I don't get. He's adding biomes and hell and all that stuff right? So aren't we going to need to reroll our maps anyway? So who cares what happens to my old torches? That old map is going to be missing a bunch of the win added in the update so bleh!
You can generate new map that has the biome.
Then why do you need all the lanterns in another map?
I like to "test" the expanse of the worlds by just building a base for a month in game then when i get iron i just start again. It helps me figure thing out myself.
I learned that an easy way to get really deep is to lose all your items in a chest, then dig a 1 by 2 hole straight down to lava.
Its about figuring out stuff for your self and rolling with what you get when you get it
Sick and tired of these torch posts. 90% of the people posting about torches will end up having to recreate their world anyways with all those massive additions. The jokes on you if you waste your time creating a room like this.

If the new updates allow for current worlds to remain active, and why wouldn't they if Notch is implementing the torch replacement anyway, then no, it's not a waste of time for people to choose to do this. They will be able to make use of lanterns however they wish.
If current worlds are unable to incorporate every new update feature (such as biomes or whatever) but are still able to be lived and played in, then it only comes down to individual players on whether they care to see those features or not.
Besides, what is the problem one way or the other? Are people just wasting their time building massive castles that can't really be lived in either? No. It's a creative process. If someone wants to build a huge room and fill it with torches, yay for them! Fun is in the eye of the beholder.
I don't find the idea of "zomg if I'm not killed every 30 seconds by billions of enemies because I'm so hardcore and everyone else playing this game must be too or STFU!!11" fun at all, but kudos to those who do. Don't enforce that insane idea of fun on me, and I won't enforce my insane ideas of fun on you.
Umm either way its a waste of time because you can just INVedit your items in like everyone and their grandma already mentioned to all the hardheads about. Besides most people dont want to have to walk 100 tiles to "MAYBE" activate the creation of a biome.
Farming torches is a huge waste of time.
P.S. Youre obviously better suited for playing classic mode anyways. And if you're going to do that then there are better building games than this.
Congratulations! You've won the 100th Topic of this Nature award!
On another note, I'm going to finally put in my two cents here; if you make a stockpile room in expectations of getting loadsa lanterns, then you're not playing the game. You're exploiting it. Notch is turning torches to lanterns out of kindness.
Sure, feel free to stockpile them. My suggestion is to just keep playing the game as you normally would. Whatever happens happens.
Me personally will edit in lanterns when ever I need them once this new feature is added. I don't like this idea at all and think its to pointless...but unlike everyone else instead of bitching I'm just going to edit them in...much easier.

Ahem. This applies here, too.
