Guys great idea what if we totally put like all of these torches everywhere and then when the update comes we have a bunch of lanterns where the torches were. Just thought of this and I didn't see any HUNDREDS of other threads on it so what do you guys think?
tl;dr: I am absolutely sure that is what will happen.
Apparently in this forum I need a tl;dr in every post.
As I am not , I have no idea what he will actually do. However, let me explain how each possibility I can think of myself would work, and you decide which one you think would happen.
1.) The torch's item id will be taken by the lantern, forcing the torch to take the next available item id. The crafting recipe for a torch will be updated to produce the new torch's id, and a new recipe will be made for lanterns. This will allow maps to be loaded instantly after the update, all torches will be seen as lanterns, placed, in your inventory, in chests, etc... This works by changing permanently the way the map is read, taking a a few seconds to change on :iapprove:'s end and working instantly on our end. (The few seconds is for changing the id's, not for content creation.) The chances of this introducing a bug are next to zero. I would have said zero a few years ago, but you never know...
2.) The new .jar could, upon first load after the update or upon loading each legacy map, go through the map and replace every instance of a torch with a lantern, then add an extra version section to the map file, that would need to be checked every time the map loaded to make sure not to do this again. This would take about an hour (my best estimate, since he is ungodly fast) to both code and debug. Then, it would either delay first start after the update by about ten seconds for each world you have, or delay your first load of a world by ten seconds. The chances of this introducing a bug are very high, and loading pre Halloween Update maps after another update could introduce very hard to track bugs if he continues this update style.
3.) A new program could be written that works like the second, but runs separately to the main jar. This would behave very similarly to the second.
Please post any other methods you think of that might possibly implement, I would be very interested to hear other's perspectives on this.
I think you could still make torches and light them with flint and steel cause he said that in the website but no one bothered to pay attention
I think you quoted the wrong person, I was replying to the fact that the OP put all the torches in the room to turn them into lanterns, instead of just keeping them in their inventory. I am well aware of the fact that you can relight them, being as not only did I read the entire update picture, I also have seen how many people are scared to death of accidentally their whole houses trying to relight their torches.
make a HUGE room, pillars avery 2 blocks or so then FILL it withh torches, when update comes, youll have hundreds of lanterns
This seems like a waste of pickaxes to create this inside to me. Monsters won't spawn in light, so build the torch-field outside. Perhaps create a wall around it first and light it up with a few torches to protect it from monsters ( go boom)... but there's no reason to dig out a huge cavern when outside will work just as great.
OR: find a cave you frequent and merely start filling it with torches instead.
PS: I, like others, believe that both placed and inventoried torches will convert to lanterns, making this needless
