Well I'm not 100% sure on this but the new bioms.. and please correct me if I'm wrong, will require a new map generation. I would guess alot of the new stuff will not show in an old map, or only show if you travel to unexplored area's. Again I could be wrong.. but if I am not.. new world, no torchs, just the old world will keep torchs and (again I'm only guessing) most peopel will start over with the new stuff on a new map... so no "free" lanterns.
Okay, everyone, there will NOT be lanterns made with any smelted ores. AT ALL. That would be a terrible idea, having to mine for ages just to get 4 lanterns worth of Iron? Or maybe Gold? It's a horrible idea in my opinion.
ZOMG 90000 MILLION ZOMBIES AFTER ME!
*places diamond lantern*
all bettah
I don't think there would be that many zombies on the screen... Plus, it would probably just kill them if they are in a certain range of the lantern, such as 3 or 2 squares, not to much of an area so that its exploited... Anyway that was also just an example, i know that its not the best idea but its just like steping into the light and laughing as the zombies die, or just putting down blocks in front of the zombie.
It is are jokes

ZOMG 3 creepers 20 skeletons and 2 zombies and 5 spiders after meh!

whatever Lamps are made of it better be well thought out. Right now there seems to be a pretty good balance on crafting. You can use cheap easy mats for stuff that doenst last, and better mats for better stuff. Hence its easy to make a cheep pick axe/shovel/ sword, but its harder to make a good one. Torchs where trivial (once coal was found), making them anything harder then axe/shovel/swords is going to really throw the whole "balance" thing off (just an opinion).
For anything (even peacefull, underground) they are REQUIRED for any gameplay.. you can mine with your hands, its not fun but you can. You cannot explore without light. LIGHT sources are required, makein a required part of game anything much more then trivial to make will ruin the easy to play, hard to master vibe MC enjoys.
I think the torch and 4 peice of glass Idea is a good one, possilbe [1] piece of IRON, as long as we get the standard 4 -items-...
I still think Minecraft isnt about how hard it is to make stuff, its about the creation (block removing/building) and exploring. You make anything a "chore" to do.. and its not fun anymore.
Technically LIGHT is not REQUIRED for game play, it would just become very difficult.
However, mining with your hands yields no ore.
I could see this happening without conflict, but my concern would be gold is rare. Notch might be adding a new value to the cave light we take granted.
gold is too rare for lanterns. iron is too overused already. So I'm expecting glass and (cooked) stone. It's a bit of a nuisance to make glass and stone, but not expensive, nor rare.
He is changing it from torches to lanterns since torches are to easy to spam. That means he is at least trying to limit us a bit on it. So it most likely won't be stone and glass since those items are really easy to obtain with in the first minecraft day before night. Yes a very to average luck person should spawn near a tree, near a beach, and near coal ore. You will be able to make one lantern at least on the first night and then just spam it.
So we know it will at least be from ether a new material or a semi-rare material. Having the choice to make a gold or iron lantern gives people material to use if they don't have any gold, and gives people who find large stockpiles of it (really I am to my 10th block now of gold) some use for it other then an inventory sucker.
Thought I think the one item we all can agree on what we don't want it to be made out of is clay.
I think best idea so far = smooth stone + glass + coal.
Maybe this.
[] []
Maybe creates 1-4 lanterns.
As I said before, that kind of makes the whole torch to lantern change mute if it is made out of those really simple matieral items is moot.
Coal, Glass, Stone, cobblestone, wood, planks, and sticks are all obtainable with in the first day and night. So in the first 17 minutes of play, a person can stock up on at least a good number of torches if they was made out of that. Maybe not as much as Torches but still a bit. Very rarely do people find iron on the first day. So a common material, but yet not too common that isn't iron would be good for lanterns.

maybe in place of the coal we might use wool it gives more use for it and some lanterns in real life use wicks soaked in oil. fish oil maybe?
OH **** CREEPER!
*places diamond lantern*
Whew... OH **** SKELETON!
*runs up and places lantern*
I believe the lantern should be made like this:
The chest being all of you're items and the tnt is for blowing up your ****
yeah i think there is quite a bit of gold. and evn so they could be like railroad tracks where you get 16 just for one reciepe.

[]=red stone and you could have to put a red stone under the flash light in a crafting window to give it power(like batteries)

Anyway, I think a Paper Lantern would be cool.

[] = Paper. I'm sure other players have found a lot more Reed than I have though. It was just an idea I thought I would share..
(edit: The torch seems like a bit of a fail now that I have thought about it. Maybe red stone dust could go in the center instead? )
Well, it is a good idea, but you cannot burn a lot of those materials. I would like it if you removed stuff like gold and stone from the fuel slot...
Able to mine for fuel?
Candles? Wax?
Wicks?
Just some ideas for the construction of a lantern.
Water = Fuel
Flint = Combination of a wick and coal?
