I propose notch include a new play mode called Hardcore Survival and include it in this update. The main goal of the mode is to stay alive as long as possible. Once you choose Hardcore for your map the diffculty is locked. Once you die it is gameover and your world is deleted. I usually don't play this game for a challange but even I would enjoy this plus with the halloween updates it would probably be fairly simple to implement and would make survival truly a challenge. Also maybe have a running in game total of nights survived so you could try and beat it. People will of course cheat and afk in a 2 x 2 hole but so what it's about personal achivement.

This is nothing you can't already do yourself with a little bit of discipline. The game doesn't need to do it. Could be cool as an achievement.
Agreed. why do you need an official mode? Gen a world, turn it up to hard, and set your own rules. Achievements could be fun. Something to work on until you get your next big building idea.
If there were a hardcore survival mode it should include hunger and thirst. That way there would be a point to farming as food would be more valuable and having thirst would make venturing out into a desert a riskier proposition.
Hunger would be an even bigger deal if seasons were implemented, as you would have to stockpile grain over the summer so you have food when everything is frozen.
We KNOW that. He's talking about the full game. Right here is talking about something like what Fallout New Vegas does, where there are the normal game modes, and a separate game mode where more realism is put into the game for players that like extra realism.
I think it'd be more hardcore to do a self-implemented hardcore survival!
Like. Give yourself only a stone sword and a handful of torches.
You aren't allowed a base.
NOW GO AND SURVIVE!

Well the difference is it would be an easy change to implement and would focrce you to play by the games rules(Unless you hack). Back in the old days before Downloadable content when developers were allowed to include options for free and made full games. (/end mini rant) you could unlock super hardcore modes once you beat the game these types of modes were designed for the elite and offered a much more challenging game that resulted in much longer playtimes. The main draw for a Harcore mode is that when your down in your cave you know that if you die your dead and it's game over. Pretending just doesn't cut it in this situation the fear of having your map and all your stuff lost plus trying to beat your best score would be intresting and be quite a rush.

I'd like Notch to implement lots of game mode types for variation, but even if he doesn't (which is probable, since he prefers simplicity), the mod creators will do this for us.
