Diamonds are a luxury. The only need for them that can't be provided elsewhere is for obsidian. Redstone is a luxury, and one that a lot of players never use because it's convoluted to use in any viable way. Gold is decorative and little else. And the people that want all these are going to get them, regardless of using lanterns, or spinning two sticks together to make fire the really old fashioned way.
My point is that it's ridiculous to say lanterns should be made of iron to stop "spamming", because it won't. Iron isn't necessary to have in any other form, but it would be completely necessary in the form of a permanent light source (i.e. lanterns). So for those who want to spam lanterns exactly the same as with torches, which seems to be a problem somehow(?) for people, they still will. They'll just use stone tools more. Little else will change. They won't need to wear iron armor, as they'll be controlling enemy spawn rates, just like they always have.
I fail to see where spamming permanent light sources is a problem though. You don't have to do it, regardless of which light source it is, if you really don't want to. You don't have to now, with current torches, if you really don't want to. Why is this a problem? O.o Anyway, iron lanterns for the sake of thwarting this fails.
Lanterns should indeed use iron. Perhaps 5 lanterns for 1 iron? Not bad at all. I have multiple stacks of 64 iron from some of my moderately sized mines, it's not overused at all. Maybe if you're trying to build a minecart track (which honestly, the rates for minecart tracks should be changed so you get more for less iron). Saying iron is overused is just ridiculous because there's not even enough items in the damn game for anything to be overused at this point. Not to mention iron is fairly common.
... unless torches last at least 10 hours+ (which will miss the point), that choice will always be the infinite lightsource. So if you make it more expensive to build, it just becomes more of a chore to make. ...
the reason i think that they should use iron or at least be expensive is for balance purposes, if the infinite light source is easy to find the mats for and make then there would be no reason for the update to torches in general, they should be hard to make, or at least hard to find the mats for so you cant just make a bunch of lanterns and say screw the torches. (i for one wont be using lanterns any way because i like challenge) but for like builders and stuff then maybe peaceful should make torches not run out so you can just build.
Don't quote me on this, but I read somewhere on this board that Notch said he was gonna make it so any torches you have currently in your games will be changed to lanterns when you update. If this is true, whats stopping Joe Bag-o-Doughnuts from making a few double chests full of torches, placing them in and around his base on the 30th, and picking them back up as lanterns after he updates on the 31st. Like I said, don't quote me on this; I can't remember the thread where I read this and it was kind of a she-said-he-said thing.
Personally, I would think it best if there were a new type of ore added for use in things like lanterns (and compasses, but that's for another thread). Maybe copper and/or tin. If both were added they could each be half as common as coal and be found in the iron layer. after smelting each ore into bars, put them together in a crafting table to get a bronze bar (I know that's not how metallurgy/forging works but we can only fit 1 item in a furnace right now). Bronze could be used for lanterns and maybe even tools, but he'd have to play around with the durability of existing materials.
This is coming from some one who has NEVER had a full stack of iron in any game he's played (which is more than my "Join Date" might suggest; I remember when we had to use iron for arrows!)
Maybe he'll introduce a new material in the Iron layer that's needed to make Lanterns and other things. Makes it about as hard to get as iron, but leaves iron to be used for other things. (maybe this material could be used for minecart tracks too but this is hopeful enough as it is...)
i like this idea, so people dont lose their precious iron but it will still be rare and expensive to make lanterns
I'm kinda thinking the point is still missed. Spamming light sources, be they torches or lanterns, is optional. If thwarting this is what the upgrade is about (regardless of how lanterns end up being made), then it's a total fail to begin with. Even now, with infinite torches, you don't have to spam them. Why do you spam them? Because you want to for some reason. Otherwise, if you didn't, you wouldn't.
I'm more apt to accept the "torches burn out for realism!" response to the upgrade than what it currently being touted here, even though realism in this respect also hardly matters in the realm of MC.
To be perfectly honest, I hope an approach of realism is Notch's ultimate goal with this. Because it's the only one that makes any amount of sense. Just because it's possible to spam light doesn't mean it's a problem. Don't if you don't like it. Same goes with just about every other playstyle option out there.
... And everybody and their dog is missing this somehow.
