If there are worms, they should be fairly rare in most biomes other than desert (as there is only a small layer of dirt before the rock starts, and I doubt worms could burrow through rock). In deserts however, there is tons of sand running fairly deep, perfect for lots of sandworms to inhabit, as well as the occasional MASSIVE one.
I think they would make the game AWSOME. Im already scared of caves and the dam creepers residing therein. and these would give everyone a reason to build on mountains/ in stone caves / or make foundations of stone.
And multiplayer servers would be amazing, id like to see servers where there are 10x10 plots of stone every so often on the surface and the rest of the level would be nothing but dirt, ores, small pockets of say 25/40 blocks of stone, making it a true test of survival with 10 or so of these things always nearby and always hungry >:smile.gif:
I agree with those that say that it should primarily appear in desert areas, and that the worm should not be able to tunnel through anything other than sand, gravel, or dirt. That would just make it too overpowered. I'm pretty sure Notch would love to implement such a creature, but only when the monster AI gets improved, especially if you went with the whole "monster is blind and can only track movement" idea. Lastly, unless these creatures are fairly rare, they shouldn't leave actual holes in the ground where they burrow. Otherwise, in a few real time days, almost all the dirt under that first layer your standing on will be gone. Plus, if the dirt is gone, other monsters will have nowhere to burrow.
This would be completely epic in every sense of the word...
I mean, Minecraft is already scary! but this...this would force me to go buy new underpants, possibly Huggies xD
But this would also actually challenge people's skill to build a bit :biggrin.gif:

Tree punchers. Everyone knows you use a pickaxe for rock, not your fists.
Once upon a time, when I was trying to play the game entirely sans spoilers, I was certain that there was some kind of worm monster, slowly eating it's way through dirt and stone, and leaving a path of gravel and dirt in it's wake. I'd still love to find one of those.
