If notch is already working on hell maybe he finished biomes? working on biomes first seems logical since he already has most of the code.
Well, he's failed biomes at least twice now, so it would be my guess that he's trying to get everything else done first, so that biomes don't take up all of the development time.
One thing that I'd like to see is a severe consequence for using a bucket of water. Otherwise one bucket of water = no lava. Also, if lava is plentiful then bringing back HUGE amounts of lava to the normal world would be too easy. I think either buckets shouldn't work, or that using one spawns mob nearby.

Iron buckets (filled or empty) would be lost in trans-dimensional warp.
Like pumpkins.

Who cares if we turn lava into obsidian? I'm pretty sure Notch is creative enough to make the underworld challenging without applying random limitations like, "Only buckets are lost in the portal!"
Solution: Buckets (Or your face) melt in hell lava. Or there's lava monsters that only come out when you get too close. And anyway, who the hell can mine obsidian while being attacked by 3 dozen hell creepers? And it shouldn't take too long to build in hell, but it should be hard, and dangerous, but well worth the effort, especially since you get EXTREME bragging rights for building a tower all the way to the top of hell, made out of lava and obsidian, since, in the most recent picture, there appears to be a roof, or at least high walls. Also, I'm pretty sure there's at least 3 new blocks in that picture, the hell-dirt stuff that he already revealed, some hell-stone stuff that you can see in the distance, which could just be normal stone, and some sort of brownish mass in the top left that could be a new mob, but I doubt it. Also, notice the many lava falls, and occasional fire clusters. And, like I said, there appear to be walls of hell-dirt too high to just be mountains. I noticed the shape of a lava river on said wall, which does indicate it's slanted, at least at the bottom. Considering where the lava falls are coming from, with no walls possible in that position, I am almost entirely sure hell is, at least partially, a huge cave. Right next to the closest lava fall is another, which is either coming out of a far wall, or, as is very much more likely, considering it falls into the nearby large lava lake, it is falling from the ceiling. So, to summarize my beliefs:
>Hell is a huge cave
>There is some hell-stone
>There's lots of hell-dirt
>There's many lava falls, some lava lakes, and rivers
>There appears to be a light brown material that also seems to be glowing
>There are currently no huge amounts of mobs, but this will likely change

I can't stop playing Destiny. Someone raid with me damn it.
I sincerely hope that it is very dangerous to be in Hell. I think that portals should be very close to each other, and I think the optimal strategy is to just get in and out of there as quickly as possible. No dicking around.
However, in the late-game if you have some diamond armour and swords and what not, I definitely think it would be cool to go spelunking around Hell. There's already a confirmed new block type, but it just looks like Hell's version of dirt. I would like to see some very rare and very powerful resources found only in Hell, and I would like to see it guarded by Hell-endemic mobs that will absolutely destroy any player who is not adequately prepared. Maybe not demons just because that strikes me as so cliche, but certainly stuff that would visually make the Creeper look like a splash of sunshine.
I think it would kinda be cool if when we die we end up in hell but you still have all your items and if you can make it out you keep your ****. But if you die in there your items drop where you originally died and you appear at spawn.
Why does it have to be trans dimensional? I mean why can't the underworld be the underworld. Hell would be REALLY deep. I mean REALLY, so he would have to expand the vertical axis a bit, but wouldn't it be cool to mine into the ceiling of hell? There would be portals too, but very rare to find. And I am not sure on how it would work with the whole 10 steps = 100 meters thing, but I think its kinda unrealistic anyway.. not to say that hell is realistic.. God I dunno where I'm going with this but I should stop.
I want there to be really large demons prefferably. Not nessesarily a lot of them, but a real challenge to defeat them. Have the loot be worth it though.

I partly agree. Since Notch said that there would be a certain effective radius in Hell (due to not porting past the edge of the map), Hell would be relatively small in terms of usable lateral distance. In order to compensate for that, Hell should be vertically huge, at least 1,000 blocks tall (or rather, deep). You portal into Hell, a treacherous cave system, at the top level of the map. Not the very top (it might be cool to have a hellish sky viewable from the uppermost point), but somewhere close. You'd have to venture into the depths of Hell if you want to find the best materials, but it would get more dangerous the deeper you go, with the monsters tougher, spawning more frequently, and more resistant to light.
The mobs in hell would need to be pretty tough to beat with normal means. Diamond swords on a Hell mob would be as effective as a wooden sword on a normal overworld mob. This would allow for gold to become a useful weapon; enchant gold weapons with alchemy or whatever magical means to make them effective against demonic enemies (same effectiveness against normal enemies). In Hell, the enchanted gold sword is the weapon of choice. I'd also like to see more varied enemies in Hell. Aggressive bats and zombies, mobs immune to fire, mobs that can dig materials out from under you; mobs that can do stuff unlike monsters in the overworld. As for the portal mechanics, anywhere from 1:7-15 sounds like a good ratio of steps in Hell to steps in the overworld.
Question: What about the respawning? Would you stay in Hell if you died there? Maybe if you die, all your items are dropped, but you respawn where you entered with a portal. But the portal is gone: you have to find your stuff if you want to escape Hell. The stuff required to craft a portal could all be found in Hell, but gathering it from scratch could be particularly difficult, due to Hell being really dangerous. They despawn time for your dropped items could be extended to make up for the difficulty of having to go get them again. Or, you just respawn at your normal location, with your dropped items not starting their despawn countdown until you get back to Hell. I could see either of those working.
for the hell mobs to come after you on the surface sorta like oblivion or diablo that would be cool
(can finally put those gard towers and panic rooms/escape routes to good use =P)
Not something that can be done easily, but perhaps with a special hell-only fuel source used to create light. I'd love to have to battle to build a citadel in Hell, because having a citadel in Hell that I fought for would be amazing.
It would be sweet if, in addition to new hell specific monsters, there was a semi-random uber monster/entity/presence that would have a random chance of spawning the longer you stay in Hell. It wouldn't be killable, but it would be possible, but very hard to fend it off for awhile while you make your escape. In addition, maybe there could be some sort of item you could craft (with rare items) that would make you invisible to this entity for a short period when it's used.
That way, even if you can 'tame' Hell to a certain degree against the 'normal' hell mobs, you probably wouldn't want to stay there for too long.
I want the souls of the damned/ lost miners running around all trying to slaughter you with pick axes with on fire. Zombies should also be on fire or throw fire with large explosions and will burn you alive with fire webbing. Ahahaha.

... I won't be sleeping for a few weeks now. Thanks.
The Ghast is looking positive so far.

They shouldn't get a hell for being wusses.
