why does this feature remind me of someone's signature on this forum? He's all like "augh that chest is so far" then "hey I can shortcut through a hell world!" then " AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH" then he's like "oh yeah, totally worth it."
I understand you can teleport or something within it, but how is it going to be implemented? Also will it like something like Oblivion?
Have you read The Wheel of Time?
Notch said it will be kind of like The Ways in that series.
Basically, gates that take you into an alternate dimension where time is different.
1 days worth of travel could be 100 days worth of travel.
However, it got corrupted and is dangerous and the like.
I am just reading through the series now, on book 3, and its aweseom i think that minecraft would be really cool with someting like this but if you walked to far your world would lagg randomly generating so much more terrain so not sure about long distance travel with it

LOL i was thinking the same thing XD
Saw that guy sign though he knew it in advance.
I wonder... will there be pre-existing portals to Hell scattered here and there, each one corresponding with another connected portal in Hell itself? Or will they be items we can build and set down?
I just hope that Hellish monsters can spawn near the openings of Hellgates, though. Maybe less powerful... but it would always bear watching lest you come home to find out that Elder Infernal over there ate all your pigs and has made your bunker his home.

well it would probably only generate terrain when you left hell world. And that is of course assuming you can just "leave" we might only be able to leave and enter through pre made gates, but I have not read the book but even if the book says it not to be that way there is no guarantee that notch will program it as such.

Only thing I want to know, what happends in hell on peaceful?
The portals probably don't even work on Peaceful, and if you switch while you'r in hell, you would get kicked out or something, or maybe nothing will be different.
im wondering how this will be utilized (and weather/how it will be implemented) in multiplayer. and other modes of the game.
my biggest questions right now are:
will gates be placeable?
will there be a way to eliminate randomly spawning mobs in some areas i.e. torches?
guilds dedicated to creating a network of hellworld tunnels?
will there be a way to prevent people from stargateing their way into your living room?
will there be a way to avoid leaving the hellworld, only to find yourself in the real world, 17 squares in the air, over a pit of lava, surrounded by creepers? (or something equally annoying)
If will be special block(s) for Hell, they should also be used to make your own enter/exit portals for Hell. Like, make an entrance, place another entrance by connecting them somehow, then place an exit connected to both entrances in Hell. Don't know if that would be a good idea and make traveling TOO easy, but it'd be fun to experiment with.
And I don't think teleporting randomly across the map would be ideal (unless you had a compass). Maybe in order to get there, you have to dig down past rare holes in the Bed Rock.

Because it wouldn't let me change it to my avatar.
Bill: Hey Steve, does Mark seem a little different after returning from the other dimension?
Mark: EXPLOSIONS FOR THE EXPLOSION GOD! HAHAHAHAHA!
Steve: Couldn't say.
Mark: BY THE GREAT CREEPER THAT HISSESS IN ALL THE DARK PLACES
BY THE CRATER THAT NEVER HEALS
I SUMMON YOU, MEGACREEPER
FROM THE DARKEST DEPTHS OF THE WARP!
Bill & Steve: OH FU-
Megacreeper: Ssssssssssss.........
It occurs to me that all sorts of things could be done with other dimensions.
A heavily-forested, perpetual-twilight realm of Faerie, with its own unique mobs and other twists. (No iron, for example. Probably also no redstone. But perhaps a new kind of metal that can be mined there?)
The Paradise theme - high noon all the time.
Floating islands would be really hard to justify as a biome, but work fine as an alternate reality.
1 thing im going to bet on is at first the portals will suck ass as i can imagine the generator will **** up sometimes, and make the portal right above a giant pool of lava or some ****..

Cool story bro. Please make a thread somebody cares about next time.

Oh did he actually compare it to The Ways? +Eleventy Gillion to Notch for reading The Wheel of Time, if so.
I actually thought of Skimming when I read about Hell but it's much more like The Ways.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say I wouldn't be surprised if we can only use Hell to get to places we've already been. In that case, that terrain would have already been generated anyway. It doesn't really make much sense to use this method of travel to explore since you won't be able to see where you're going. You'd also be risking popping out on top of a spawner or above a huge pit or something equally death inducing.
Man, I'm imagining entering this world through my little portal, planning to just walk a few steps and pop out, getting chased by demons or monsters, popping out, then establishing a new little safe base, needing to make a compass and realizing just how far away I am from home. Unwilling to re-enter the hellworld, you start a long and treacherous journey back to your home.... far. far. away.

OH COME ON, SCAMPS WERE HARDLY VISCIOUS.
But yeah, I imagine this will be like the Plains of Oblivion in TES IV: Oblivion.

Plenty of other things come to mind.
they did, but you see the undead to often in games to give a damn
actually, i'd like to have wild animals instead. I loved Stranded
