I like the idea of lanterns, as long as my torches change to them when the update rolls around. They should though
*awesome face*
EDIT: Ninja'd by SK lol
I knew people would torch spam when they found out they were getting replaced =P
I hope you guys know its replacing inventory/stored ones too, so you don't need to place all those torches, just filled tons and tons of boxes with them..
I have a question. If torches are going to burn out, what about burning logs? As far as I can tell, logs can burn forever right now. Are they going to change that too?
this is bad because torches will burn out faster aking it harder for people to work at night. even if on peaceful mode.

Ok, I have been reading the forums for a while now and haven't really given much thought on posting hear until now. Game design is not something for the faint of heart, and Notch has proven he can do it. Look at what he has done now and what is coming up in the 31st update. So i'm pretty sure he puts thought into whatever he tries to do so the game doesn't become boring.
Games are designed to be fun. Realism is not necessary to be fun, and in some cases may actually make it boring. That being said, the game (most of the time) should be challenging to people (especially when this game mode is 'Survival'). I guess that is why I get confused to see people play, for example, a strategy game, where they sit and play simcity for an hour only to unleash one million Nukes/monkeylords (cookie if you get reference) unto the enemy. The torch in this game is one of the easiest things to craft: needing no table, and is made of two of the most common special resources, sticks and coal. I think it is just too simple to make, and I approve of notches idea of the wear out torches.
The major problem is to make Lanterns not resource hungry while at the same time making them not spammable, for that is the whole reason for the change.
I think something like this is a good balance between the two:

This would make 2 lanterns, which burn infinitely. The Stone (not cobblestone) makes it much harder to craft then regular torches, while still a very easily found source. If it is still too easy, I guess we could mine the center piece out of that glowing hell material.
Of course this is just from a newbie poster so, what do I know anyway?

Welcome to my ice cream store! We got four flavors: Vannila, Chocolate, Strawberry, and AIDS. New Mob Idea
The real problem is a lack of a carryable light source, and it's a major problem. This game basically requires you to torch spam to explore any cave. I know he said there were complications with the lighting engine, but I think it's an important thing to fix. It would also make the game much more realistic, it's kind of ridiculous that the only way to see as you go through a cave is to plant 100 torches on the walls.

Apparently the complications with the lighting engine have been solved, but you need to remember that this game is in ALPHA and may well be in development for another year. Features are still being added and the game is nowhere near finished. Give it time.
That is only if you are so frightened of the occasional monster that you spend all of your time relighting torches and being obsessive about avoiding darkness at all costs.
How did we go from bored to frightened?
I like to claim my territory, that's obsessive?
That's a good joke.

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?
Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm more than happy to share my map if anyone wants to check out how enormous the above-mentioned cave complex is. I just need someone to pm me instructions on how to share it. Alternatively I could give a tour on you tube perhaps.
I did some more exploring tonight and it yielded yet ANOTHER section that I had overlooked the first time I had been over in the western wing due to being jumped my a skeleton and watching it fall down a hole. Well I rediscovered the hole and got the courage to explore it and found a lava pit underneath with a ton of obsidian and some red stone. Above that I discovered in the ceiling another area unexplored and spent over an hour exploring it (found a lot of iron up there). There is at least three wings, only two fairly explored (one is full of creatures and not fully explored, the other was strangely bereft); the third definitely has monsters so I've left that to another day.
Point being just that all this exploration would have been impossible without the use of trusty torches. Otherwise if I wanted to return to the area I'd have to face yet again more baddies, or worse, spend too much time down there and when I return to the surface, the complex leading there is in darkness - leaving me cut off. To me that prospect sounds far more frustrating than exciting.

Maybe hell rock is even more flammable than coal?

Possibly a difficulty easier than peaceful? xD
