And I'm sure you belived that didn't you. Gulible much? Only an idiot would say herp derp I don't care about making money and making more sales. Notch isn't an idiot and he already has your money haha.
Well yeah he does have my money and I like the game and I will always like the game no matter what he adds im sure.
how do we go around making lanterns then? im guessing iron.. o boy iron is just getting more uses and i already use it enough...
The chances are it will use glass, you can not complain about something that the chances are is not going to happen.
Notch knows about iron being overused, so will probably avoid it in making the recipe for lanterns.
Or he'll make Iron slightly more common, I'm hoping we can make lanterns out of different metals..Gold would have a real use then.
Quote from Invertin »
Guys.
He made that recipe up just now.
Why would you automatically assume that the real recipe is going to look anything like that or use iron at all.
Seriously you're just INVENTING problems now.
Let's have a look at what Lanterns are made from on google..For the lazy.
Most seem to be some kind of metallic substance..Could it be..Steel or Iron?
Chances are he'll use Iron but bump up the amount of iron in newly generated maps, too.

If you're going to make this change, you might as well just remove torches. No one is going to use them any more.
Bad change.
That depends, if lanterns cost as much as we think they will (i.e. Iron cost), you'll have to use torches to survive your first few nights, really.

I know I'd rather use torches as a cheap, emergency light source than expensive lanterns.
QFT, I'd use torches until I had enough Iron (Assuming the torches use Iron) to have a Iron Pick, Axe and Shovel (Stone doesn't last long enough for me) and then spend the rest of my iron on lanterns with the occasional tool as the current ones run out of use.
Quote from Invertin »
To the above, use a lantern instead.
Endless cycle, lets assume I need Iron to make the lantern (Likely, it's going to be either paper or iron and neither is particularly easy to come across before your first night on most worlds), I need to mine to get iron but I need light to mine, if I'm mining heaps of iron to make lanterns and my torches go out, what do I do then?

Lantern Recipe:
Where = String
This creates x4 Lanterns makes sensce and then Iron isn't wasted.
Oh great, spider farming.
Quote from Invertin »
Hey. Here's an idea.
How about you DON'T EXPLORE MASSIVE CAVE SYSTEMS FIRST THING YOU DO.
This is not a complicated concept. You have temporary light sources so that when you hole up in the night you can survive. You stick to that plan until you can build lanterns, then you use them to light up the cave. The cave is not and should not be your first destination and goal. Start with the wooden pickaxe, start with the small room as your home, start with the small and safe. THEN move on to exploring the dark and deep and dangerous. By the point you SHOULD be exploring deep caves, you've got enough lanterns.
...And if Lanterns use Iron, how are we meant to get them without exploring massive cave systems? Small caves and digging small mines and the like usually only yields 4-5 bars of iron for me.
Also, the entire point of Minecraft is that it's open ended..I play how I want to, this is limiting that.
What you're saying is like me going "I know you like eating this food, but screw you, I prefer this food and I think everyone should eat it!"

Some lanterns are portable, as someone else said. So these better be. :<
Unfortunately, due to the lighting system in Minecraft working on a grid, portable light sources aren't really possible.
Unless Notch turns out to have rewritten the entire thing. Which I very much doubt to be honest.
Possible? Yes.
Taxing on your hardware? Yes. Very yes.
I can see this being really good or being really bad, depending on how Notch implements it, the recipe and (if necessary) any adjustments to iron/gold/diamond spawning will make all the difference as to whether its worth it or not, I can see myself using Lanterns as the light in my mines with Torches making say, an arrow, to point towards the way out.

Notch on his twitter: "bugs that feel wrong get fixed"
Do not get attached to your saves, seriously, stuff like this has happened before, if there's something you love and really want to build...Wait for release.
This will make playing hard even more fun. But, I do agree that on peaceful mode that they should not run out. There are builders out there. :tongue.gif:
Somebody mentioned earlier the possibility of portable light only being recalculated per block. So like the equivalent of the game picking up and replacing an imaginary torch in whatever block you happen to be standing on at the moment, which only updates as you move to a new block.
That seems like it would be barely taxing at all, yes?

Shame we don't have a... I dunno... CREATIVE MODE... For those kind of people.
Maybe all the people who are against change should go back to playing Minecraft pre-alpha... You know... Get the pure experience... In fact... Why play pre-alpha at all? Grab yourself a pick and a shovel and head out into the bush... Bye, bye... Don't forget your infinite torches so you can light up your dirt hut.
as a paying customer i just want to add in my 2 cents.
i think its a BIG mistake to make torches burn out and therefore need to be re-lit every so often. This is not a fun element, its annoying and tedious, almost as bad as how hard it is to get your hands on a even a small amount of gunpowder. and because of the gunpowder issue i cheated myself out of a pure experiance and just hacked my inventory for what i wanted.
I may do the same for these torches/lanterns... if lanterns are the new torches, but are way harder to make, i will feel a large need to cheat them into my inverntory, instead of playing by the rules.
In conclusion, i love how simple, easy and cheap the current torches are. A lot of people use torches as decoration, they want to put it up, and leave it there, and be able to come back at any time and enjoy thier art/work, without having to FIX it.
Please dont make torches fizzle out, EVER, because i just simply wont use them anymore.
Be careful, then. It's a survival game, after all.
I have 650 torches on my main map right now.
Assuming a 99.99% accuracy rate at relighting them, I am still more likely than not (!) to light something on fire relighting them a single time. Which for most of the torches would mean burning down the entire map.
"Be careful" is ridiculous. We are not superhumans. Even taking 2 seconds each and being super careful, you would fatigue and your vision would play tricks on you pretty quickly if you are anything but 18 years old and on speed.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. If he's replacing existing torches with lanterns and the lanterns aren't too difficult to make, I'm find with it.
You guys are acting like this change will be the end of the world. Get it through your heads that he knows what he's doing. If it's not fun he'll change it. Finite torches will be just fine as long as its not something like only lasting a few minutes. If it lasts 3 game days then it will be acceptable. As it stands a permanent light source is way to easy to make. Just cut a few tress, get some of the million coal you have in your chests, make over 9000 torches, spam everywhere you go. That is how the mechanics are atm. And with torches being finite and us getting lanterns for permanent light sources I believe it will just make you set your priorities better. The only problem I could have with this is is notch made lanterns use iron. Which I highly doubt he will do because he even said it himself iron is a much overused material in minecraft. And NiteFever there is nothing wrong with how you get gunpowder. Tnt is rare and hard to get. Meant to be. And look at it this way. If you get could gunpowder easier what do you think grievers would use it for hmm? Everyone here seems to complain all the time that survival isn't survivaly enough. So when notch makes it a tad bit harder you all freak out and say he ruined the game. That would be like if you asked for a piece of chocolate, i gave it to you and you spit it back in my face saying it is too sweet. I mean giving your opinions isn't bad but don't completely judge something before you even try it. Just be grateful Notch even updates this game. With the money he has from this he could just stop development and roll in his money until he dies.
I wouldn't mind it. I like using lava as a source of light.
you my friend. have just earned a cookie
Except for the minor detail that it catches anything flammable on fire within 3 blocks. Which means you have to recess it even further into the wall or floor and block off with glass, and now your floors/walls have to be at least 3 blocks thick.
lava (hard to get in the first place) + glass + 3 block thick walls + still a risk of burning everything if you click in the wrong place = more expensive than lanterns, I guarantee.
Everyone here seems to complain all the time that survival isn't survivaly enough. So when notch makes it a tad bit harder
Right there is the problem. The change is unlikely to make it any harder, tad bit or otherwise. Thus, unnecessary. ESPECIALLY when in the same update, there are several much better ideas for making the game harder in better ways. For example, more monster variety (and presumably AI), and the "darkness is more powerful deeper down" thing - a much better approach to lighting change than torches.
Come to think of it, why would you ever change lighting at the same time on BOTH the production side and the consequences side of things? That seems rather odd.

If this torch to lantern thing goes through then im leaving minecraft indefinitely. If at a later time this unfeature gets patched then I will be back definitely.

Irock, I agree completely. Although we have no idea how they will be made.
I do stuff.
Um... is there actually any reason that there's that many torches there?
Also, torches turn to lanterns, definitely. I'd love if lanterns have the functionality to be hung on the ceiling; that would be damn useful.
