I say that because if there was a demo version there would probably be a lot less pirating going on. I myself had a pirated copy before I purchased the game. I bought the game the day notch posted beta would be released on the twentieth. Maybe instead of a demo version notch could implement a trial version that would last for a week or two weeks. Then disable being able to play offline without a registered account? Of course, this would have to take place when notch gets free time. Probably after beta.
Thoughts/Opinions?
EDIT:
Before you read anymore posts, Please read this.
Playing creative has been mentioned a few times now, and we have gone over the fact that it is nothing like alpha/beta. If you were coming here and had intentions of posting something along the lines of that, please don't.
Thank you.

Limit it so players can only place 150 blocks, no more then that, and cannot craft anything other then wood items, plus limited to one chunk, with a MUCH MUCH MUCH higher bedrock layer(about 10 blocks down below sea level), and all mobs disabled.
Best way to encourage game purchase.
And you can't do multiplayer with it, either, and you need to log in everytime before use.
i dont think any demo that is the full client with trial status on the account will work, i have a friend who got minecraft in the free week, then found that as long as he's not connected to the internet he can play it fine.

limited to one chunk
that's pretty crap man, a demo that lets you play in a 16x16 square? sounds fun.
I think a demo could be a good idea. Instead of some arbitrary time/block/chunk/etc limit though, simply make it so that the player cannot load or save games in the trial version. They can get the "full" experience, but until they get purchase the game, they have to start over every time.
You know they have a free "classic" mode, right? That's pretty much the demo.
Classic mode could not be considered a demo. Why?
1.) No crafting
2.) No mining ores.
3.) No mobs
4.) No night time
5.) No damage - Hearts or Oxygen meter.

I think a demo would be a good idea. I think a demo only in the browser would be good. Kind of like classic now where you can not save unless you log in.
How about in the demo, you can't find diamonds or gold, you can't make weapons, you can't go to peaceful mode, and there's 10 times as many creepers? And a size limit of course. Plus no saves and you can't pause.

OOH! OOH! I HAVE AN IDEA! LET'S MAKE THE GAME REALLY HARD AND FILL IT WITH THE MOB THAT EVERYONE USES AS A MEME NOWADAYS AND MAKE IT SO THAT NOONE WANTS TO BUY IT BECAUSE IT'S -SO DAMN HARD-!

^ He has a point.
BUT THERE IS NO NEED TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS SO PLEASE DON'T DO IT.
Lets be realistic: Browser only, Restricted to 25-50 chunks, no saving, normal difficulty only, Bedrock is 2x higher, max height is 1 or 2 blocks above cloud layer. But even that is harsh, so Notch should just implement a 2 week trial. He also needs to get rid of the ability to play offline without an account.

There's supposed to be a tutorial level eventually, right? That could serve adequately as a demo.
Make it so that the demo would essentially be a download of the tutorial level?

haha zoo tycoon was awesome. I liked the expansion that let you release dinosaurs on the populace.
In all seriousness, I don't think notch should add a demo until he is thinking about bumping up to the full version. Who ever heard of beta with a demo? It just seems weird to be demoing a work in progress.... Although the no-save thing is a good idea, when the time comes.
A demo would be really good, and would boost the sales of this game a lot. So many more people would get hooked onto the game when it gets referred to them from friends.
For the demo, I think that it should be downloadable, with all game features, lasting one day/night cycle. Along with the tutorial, that would allow prospective player to try out most of the things this game offers.
I thought SeaNanners was already basically the Demo guy... everybody watches his videos before buying the game :|
I don't, and never did watch LPs or tutorials or anything of Minecraft. Though, I watched my best friend play it for a few hours before I bought my copy.
For a demo, I think 11x11 chunk radius restriction (you spawn in the middle-most one), no better than cobblestone tools craftable (although, the materials can be found), can only dig half as deep and half as high. No dungeons. Normal mode only. Any more than that is being a **** (if not already).
Thoughts/Opinions?
Thank you.

Creative is nothing compared to alpha/beta. It's gameplay is also very different.

I usually play Portal 2, TF2, L4D, Fallout 3 and Super Meat Boy in it!
Limited resources, space, etc. A few aspects of the game are missing, and so on.
... I didn't. Does that make me a loner, or the outcast of a cult, or something?
