How do you plan/set up your creations in Minecraft?
I try to visualize what I'm building in my head, whether it be a tower or hut, most of the time but it always comes out too short or off-center or something.
Should I be using:
graph paper?
A program?
Do it in Classic-Mode first?
One time while building an epic castle I set stone place markers every four spaces to make sure everything was symmetrical :tongue.gif:. What do you do to plan? I'd be great if you could post images of your plans or how you set up a large scale building if possible.
Thnx

Noob: The day when aaallllll the hovering cubes of dirt fall into the farm animal infested ocean, will be the day I finally work up the nerve to go into that portal to the Nethe-
There's not really all that much planning for me. I just mess around a bit with some ideas and choose one. Then I just fix little bits and pieces after the 'prototype' is done.
If it's just basic cubic/ square, or rectangular, its just a matter of thinking of the dimensions, and simply placing the blocks :biggrin.gif:
If it's more complicated such as a circle/dome/sphere, or a parabola, using diagrams such as this -
If you're doing complex recreations, such as doing a scale model of a star destroyer (from star wars) or the Enterprise, from star trek, you could be using programs such as google sketchup to lay it out, and get the angles, and lengths correct etc.
I personally use these as some sort of method if i want everything to be exact, but alot of the time, i do what you do, picture it in my head, and in combination with these techniques, I just let my imagination run wild,
If you can get a 3D model file you can use a number of modelling programs to voxellise. If you can express it mathematically you can use graph paper (or a program if you have that talent, python4lyf). If you have only have an image you have your work cut out for you (though having multiple angles - particularly orthogonal viewpoints - makes it easier). If you don't even have an image then you're going to have a really tough time of things.
Personally I just draw a quick concept out in photoshop or paint. I just use a square brush and draw out what I'm thinking of. Basically just digital graph paper.
MS Paint. It's the only thing it's good for, but it does pixel-drawings pretty well. Unless I leave the save format as its default of .jpg, which is lossy compression >:sad.gif:

Troll moment... Has anyone wanted to build a parabola? I think I leave that shape in algebra class, (stuiped quadratic equations.....)
Bacvk on topic Graph Paper is nice but too time consuming imo, so I always build frame then basic structure and details land latter.
y=-b+-sqrt(b^2-4ac)/2a
Some people want to build parabolic arches for some architectural designs, idk, i've made a parabola before, it turned out quite well, I used a diagram I found somewhere, and I also tried making my own using some basic x-y values. :biggrin.gif:

Look into certain architectural styles — I believe the church/cathedral styles of Spain/France ca. late 14th century makes use of them. (I haven't studied much architecture, though; I'm very iffy on that period/region.)
Also, parabolic dishes. =P (Euuurk, building arbitrary voxellised paraboloids... *shudder*) Maybe someday we'll be able to send redstone signals through the air!
I usually do a little physical planning ahead of time (such as doing up a circle in MS Paint, and then putting it on my flat area with wool or sand as placeholders).
However, I always do a lot of thought-based planning. Sometimes when I'm going to sleep at night, I try to think of ideas to build, and how I'd be able to build the specifics of them.
Thinking on your feet is always a good skill to have too; the arena I've been working on here and there on my main SSP world is mostly done on-the-fly; the only planning I did was leveling the area and drawing 3 (maybe 4? I can't remember) circles with sand.
However, the one thing that always fails no matter how much you plan is branch mining. I've constructed lots and lots of entirely separate branch mines on several worlds, and they all run into a cave before I reach my desired branch length! Murphy 1, Fractangle 0.

Sanity is a carrot. You find it green and easy to find, but the deeper you go, it turns funny colors and narrows down to nothing.

idk if this was helpful but yeah :biggrin.gif:

I use it sometimes and it helps a lot just to have something to plan out your builds.

Yeah I started using that site too, very helpful.
